    Description: In a recent article, Lyle et al. (2005) used acoustic data to argue that 230Th-normalization overestimates sediment focusing in the equatorial Pacific by as much as an order of magnitude. They argue that lateral transport of 230Th in the water column results in much wider geographical variability in the vertical flux of scavenged 230Th than recognized by geochemists who have studied the behavior of this isotope in the water column. We disagree with this view and point to what we perceive as flaws in the arguments presented by these authors.

    Description: Egg production of cultivated broodstocks of orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides and larvae rearing were surveyed in Iran from 2008 to 2012. . Broodstocks were obtained by rearing of 7 wild juveniles (587.57 ± 132.63 g body weight) which were caught from the north of Persian Gulf in October 2008 and reared to December 2012.. Captured juvenile fishes were fed using defrosted trash fish at a rate of 4-6 percent of body weight per day.. Four-year-old fishes spawned spontaneously, when average weight of females and males were about 7020 ± 1277 g and 5128 ± 253g respectively. Effects of four temperature ranges (23-24, 26-27, 28-29 and 31-32 °C ) and three tank size ( 40L, 300L and 2400L) on hatching and survivle rates were examined. Eggs were stocked as a density of 25 Eggs L-1. Effects of tank size on hatching rate and survival of larvae were assessed at 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 days after hatching (DAH). The optimal temperature range for hatching was 28-29 °C. No difference was observed among hatching rates of fish within the various tank sizes. Survival rates of larvae in 2400L fiber glass tanks until 30 days after hatching were significantly higher than the other tanks. Results indicate this species can be reproduced and reared in large numbers under normal rearing conditions and carefully controlled temperature.

    Description: Studies on the effects of anthropogenic activity on wildlife aim to provide a sound scientific basis for management. However, misinterpretation of the theoretical basis for these studies can jeopardise this objective and lead to management outcomes that are detrimental to the wildlife they are intended to protect. Misapplication of the terms ‘habituation’, ‘sensitisation’ and ‘tolerance’ in impact studies, for example, can lead to fundamental misinterpretations of research findings. Habituation is often used incorrectly to refer to any form of moderation in wildlife response to human disturbance, rather than to describe a progressive reduction in response to stimuli that are perceived as neither aversive nor beneficial. This misinterpretation, when coupled with the widely held assumption that habituation has a positive or neutral outcome for animals, can lead to inappropriate decisions about the threats human interactions pose to wildlife. We review the conceptual framework for the use of habituation, sensitisation and tolerance, and provide a set of principles for their appropriate application in studies of behavioural responses to anthropogenic stimuli. We describe how cases of presumed habituation or sensitisation may actually represent differences in the tolerance levels of wildlife to anthropogenic activity. This distinction is vital because impact studies must address (1) the various mechanisms by which differing tolerance levels can occur; and (2) the range of explanations for habituation- and sensitisation-type responses. We show that only one mechanism leads to true behavioural habituation (or sensitisation), while a range of mechanisms can lead to changes in tolerance.

    Notes: Laser assisted particle removal (LAPR) is an innovative laser cleaning technique which can remove various particles from solid surfaces via laser induced explosive evaporation of a chosen energy transfer medium, e.g., water. An Ar+ ion continuous-wave laser (488 nm) was used to study the CO2 laser pumped explosive evaporation of water adsorbed on a Si substrate. The probe laser beam was parallel to the sample surface at different displacements and interacted with the ejected material upon pulsed CO2 laser irradiation in analogy with the time resolved laser beam deflection experiments on laser induced vaporization of copper by Guo et al. [Opt. Commun. 77, 381 (1990)]. Using CO2 laser energies which are much greater than the LAPR thresholds, we observed the generation and propagation of a shock wave at supersonic speeds followed by a water vapor/aerosol/particle cloud at a much slower speed. From the evolution of the shock wave, the total conversion efficiency of the incident laser beam into the shock wave has been determined using a self-similar approximation.

    Notes: Incorporation of magnetic, metallic quantum wells in semiconductors has added new dimensions to epitaxial heterostructures. Magnetotransport experiments explore the interplay of bandstructure, quantum confinement, dimensionality and magnetism. Rare earth monoarsenides, like ErAs, have been grown as buried layers in GaAs. The material is a semimetallic antiferromagnet that exhibits spin-disorder scattering at the Néel point. By diluting the ErAs with ScAs, lattice matching to GaAs can be achieved and these materials exhibit Shubnikov–de Haas (SdH) oscillations. The exchange interaction between the conduction band and the 4f spin deduced from SdH agrees with that derived from spin-disorder scattering. Surprisingly, down to 2 monolayers, quantum confinement does not convert the semimetal into a semiconductor. This is not understood. But, the Neel point can be seen to drop by a factor of two by following the spin-disorder scattering. In the few monolayer regime the magnetotransport can change its character and is more aptly described by bound magnetic polarons. More recently, ferromagnetic, metastable, τ-MnAl layers have also been grown on GaAs. Thin layers of τ-MnAl grow in such a way that the tetragonal axis is perpendicular to the interface. The extraordinary Hall effect and longitudinal magnetotransport confirm that the moment has the desired property of being oriented perpendicular to the interface.

    Notes: Single-crystal films of τ-MnAl are grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on GaAs substrates. The extraordinary Hall effect shows a large hysteresis loop, and the magnetization is found to have a substantial component perpendicular to the plane of the film.
