Notes: We have studied the physical properties of a high directivity microstrip directional coupler on a single-layered ferrite substrate under the influence of an external dc magnetic field H0. We also present an analysis of the coupled microstrip lines on a ferrite-dielectric substrate. Our method of calculation, which is done in the spectral domain, is based upon a combination of the Hertz vector potentials and the Galerkin numerical technique. The dyadic Green functions for the coupled microstrip lines are also obtained. We consider the even and odd modes of propagation, with the characteristic impedances and normalized phase constants of these artificial structures obtained as a function of their geometry. Special attention is given to the determination of a high directivity for the coupler, by equating the phase velocity of the even and odd modes of propagation which, in turn, is obtained throughout the variation of the applied magnetic field H0. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A microscopic theory, based on the Heisenberg model, is employed to investigate the spin wave spectra in a semi-infinite superlattice made up of two ferromagnetic materials, where the constituents may present both the uniaxial and nonuniaxial components of the single-ion anisotropy. Our calculations are carried out for the exchange-dominated regime, and a transfer-matrix approach is used to simplify the algebra, which otherwise could be quite heavy. The calculated spectra show that, in addition to bulk spin wave modes, there may be surface modes associated with the truncation of the superlattice.

Notes: We discuss the magnetic polariton modes which propagate in a two-sublattice, uniaxial Heisenberg antiferromagnet, for the case where an external magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the easy axis of the material. At high magnetic fields, a large magnetization component normal to the easy axis will be induced, and we may expect to find a magnetic field induced surface polariton mode, which propagates parallel to the easy axis, with nonreciprocal propagation characteristics. We confine our discussion to antiferromagnets, which have a body-centered tetragonal structure (e.g., XF2, with X=Mn and Fe). The spectra show that the nonreciprocal propagation of the surface polariton is much more evident in MnF2 crystals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A theory is presented for the study of surface spin waves in a two-sublattice, uniaxial antiferromagnet when there is an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the easy axis of the material to induce a canting of the spins. Our theoretical model uses a microscopic canted Heisenberg magnetic Hamiltonian, treated within the RPA (random phase approximation) approach. Numerical results show, from the stability condition, that the convergence to the infinite-bulk canting angle θ can be over several layers (for MnF2) or almost localized in the surface layer (for FeF2 and CoF2). The bulk mode for the uniaxial case (θ=0) becomes split into two well-defined bulk regions in the spectrum for the canted materials. It is found that, between these branches, there is an acoustic surface magnon branch. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a theory for the attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectra to probe surface magnetic polaritons that propagate in semi-infinite superlattices made up of a rare-earth material intercalated by a nonmagnetic layer. We consider both the spiral and the cone states of the rare-earth constituent, apart from its simple ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) alignment due to the nearest (next-nearest) exchange coupling. We use the framework of the effective medium theory to determine the magnetic polariton's dispersion relation, since it is very suitable to explain experimental observations of excitations in the far-infrared. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the ATR spectra, with emphasis in the surface polariton's nonreciprocal aspect shown in the cone state of the rare-earth material. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract We study the phase diagram for the Ising Model on a Cayley tree with competing nearest-neighbor interactionsJ 1 and next-nearest-neighbor interactionsJ 2 andJ 3 in the presence of an external magnetic field. To perform this study, an iterative scheme similar to that appearing in real space renormalization group frameworks is established; it recovers, as particular cases, previous works by Vannimenus and by Inawashiroet al. At vanishing temperature, the phase diagram is fully determined, for all values and signs ofJ 2/J 1 andJ 3/J 2; in particular, we verify that values ofJ 3/J 2 high enough favor the paramagnetic phase. At finite temperatures, several interesting features (evolution of reentrances, separation of the modulated region into two disconnected pieces, etc.) are exhibited for typical values ofJ 2/J 1 andJ 3/J 2.

Notes: Abstract We consider the effects of a charge layer (accumulation and depletion layers) on the spectrum of collective plasmon-polariton modes of a semiconductor superlattice consisting of alternating mediaA andB, where mediumA is an-doped semiconductor and mediumB an insulator. The effect of the charge layer is taken into account assuming a linear position dependence for the free-carrier concentration and for the dielectric function, within mediumA. Applications are made considering mediumA asn-type semiconductor and mediumB being vacuum. We compare our results with those obtained in the abscence of the charge layer and we discuss their differences.

Notes: Abstract. In this paper we present a theoretical study about the influence of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy on the magnetic properties of magnetic metallic trilayers Fe/Cr/Fe (110). The theory is based on a realistic phenomenological model which includes the following contributions to the free magnetic energy: Zeeman, cubic and uniaxial anisotropy, as well as bilinear and biquadratic exchange energies. The experimental parameters used here are based on experimental data known from the literature. We present numerical results of magnetization versus external applied field to illustrate the behavior of the system. Our numerical results show that in some situations the saturation field can not be correctly determined by magnetoresistance measures.

Notes: Abstract A theory of light scattering from the surface of a highly opaque metallic liquid bounded by a transparent medium is developed using a linear response function theory. The light scattering cross section is calculated taking only the ripple mechanism into account in the two media. Two limit cases are also derived and it is shown that they are in agreement with previous theories. Numerical results are also presented and in particular it is shown that our theoretical spectrum is in good agreement with the experimental data.
