Notes: Summary In creeping flows of thin films, the capillarity can play a dominant role. In this paper, the creeping film flow down an inclined plane with an edge is considered. The influence of the capillarity on the velocity and the film surface is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally.

Notes: Summary The changes of mechanical properties of filled polymers and their dependence on deformation history are the subject of this paper. For most of filled polymers in practical use, the theory of linear viscoelasticity cannot be applied, even at small deformations. In this work, samples of glass bead filled polybutadiene rubber with different filler levels were investigated at small strains (ε〈10%). The evolution of the relaxation modulus and Poisson's ratio was observed in cyclic experiments, which were also applied in inducing a defined deformation history for the succeeding relaxation experiments. In these experiments, the relaxation modulus and Poisson's ratio were measured as functions of time, with strain, strain rate, filler level and the preceeding deformation history as parameters. The results indicate dewetting as the main reason for the changes of the mechanical properties of the filled materials.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The quasi-static contact process between a rigid, smooth cylinder and a linear-viscoelastic beam is studied. It is shown that the beginning of the contact represents the problem of a point load on the visco-elastic beam. The influence of the history of the point load on the subsequent contact problem with a finite contact zone is explained. The viscoelastic contact problem is reduced to an elastic case.

Notes: Summary The impact of a rigid sphere on a viscoelastic half-space is studied. The viscoelasticity is assumed to be weak and the problem is solved by a perturbation technique with the classical Hertzian solution as the “zeroth order approximation”. The deformation process consisting of the approach and the restitution period is analysed neglecting the wave effects. Simple expressions for the contact force and the penetration depth are obtained in analytically closed forms. The unknown time-path dependence is determined by applying Newton's Second Law to the rigid sphere. Simple expressions for the final penetration depth at the end of the contact are given. Finally, formulae for the coefficient of restitution are derived.

Notes: Abstract A new possible instability mechanism for a compressible Newtonian fluid is presented. This phenomenon has been found in the case of an isothermal creeping plane Couette-flow. The instability stems from the density dependence of the material properties of the fluid in the above-described kinematics.

Notes: Abstract. A model for the bulk viscosity of a non-Newtonian fluid is presented. An elementary two-phase cell containing an incompressible non-Newtonian fluid and a gas bubble is compared with a one-phase cell consisting of a corresponding compressible non-Newtonian fluid. The rates of work of both cells are set equal to one another. The deformation histories of both cells are represented by the density history. From the extra stress an expression for the bulk viscosity of the compressible non-Newtonian fluid is derived. The material data are expressed in terms of the known properties of the two-phase flow.

Notes: Abstract The steady two-dimensional pressure-induced compressible flow of a Newtonian fluid between two fixed parallel planes is considered. Assuming that the width of the slit is much smaller than its length we advance a perturbation theory and obtain simple analytical results with the well-known incompressible formulae as a limiting case.
