    Notes: Abstract  In spite of the ecological relevance of terrestrial locomotion for many bird species, this function remains poorly studied to date. Gait preferences and transitions seem present, but it is not known which factors might determine the running style. Morphological and morphometric data needed for further biomechanical modelling are presented for the black-billed magpie (Pica pica), a species which walks, runs and hops. Detailed descriptions of the muscle–tendon systems and the attachment sites on the hindlimb skeleton are given. Pinnation angles, fibre lengths and muscle masses are determined. From the latter two, physiological cross-sections of the muscle bundles are calculated. Tendon ossifications are qualitatively scored. Further, information on the mechanical variables of the body segments are collected (i.e. mass, length, position of the centre of gravity and moment of inertia of digits, tarsometatarsus, lower leg, upper leg, body, and head/neck). Moment arms of the important muscles powering terrestrial locomotion are discussed and, for some upper leg muscles, an equation to calculate the moment arms as a function of knee and hip joint angles is presented. All these data are indispensable for further kinesiological research.

    Notes: An ontogenetic study of several postembryonic stages of Haplochromis elegans shows that the muscle referred to as “musculus levator externus IV” by previous authors in the adult stage of cichlid fishes is a compound muscle composed of the M. levator externus IV and the central portion of the M. obliquus posterior. Thus the supposed shift of the insertion area of the fourth external levator muscle from the fourth epibranchial to the fifth ceratobranchial, as deduced from adult morphology only, did not occur. Although this ontogenetic discovery does not change the functional specializations ascribed to the muscle by previous authors, it could have very important implications for the phylogenetic placement of the Cichlidae relative to such major taxa as Labroidei and Embiotocidae.

    Notes: In fishes, the abducting hyoid bars push the suspensoria outwards. This force transmission is generally assumed to be important during fast suction feeding (strenuous activity). In Astatotilapia elegans the hyoid symphysis can best be modelled as an oblique hinge. The relevance of this hinge morphology on the force transmission has been studied by means of a three-dimensional (3D) model simulating the displacements of the hyoid-suspensorial system. It appears that the transmission force factor increases throughout feeding in the case of the hinge model. Reduction of the hyoid symphysis to a point articulation (as was done formerly in attempts to quantify the transmission by means of planar models) suggests an unfavourable decline of the transmission force to zero during maximal mouth expansion. The angle between the hinge axis of the symphysis and the longitudinal axis of the hyoid bar is 45°. Such a configuration allows for a maximal increase in the volume of the buccal cavity for suction. This functional aspect, together with the apparent maximization of the force transmission during feeding, suggests that constructional and neuromotoric factors have been improved during the evolutionary development of the hyoid-suspensorial system.

    Notes: Suction feeding in Astatotilapia elegans occurs by a series of rapid, coupled movements of various head parts. The lower jaw rotates with respect to the neurocranium through an angle of 62° in less than 15 ms. The power requirements for jaw depression are calculated from a mathematical model and may reach a peak of ±4 watt in a 12-cm-long specimen. Data from the literature on mechanical output of fish muscle suggest that a muscular volume equal to 44% of the volume of the fish (= 45 cm3) should be required, if it is premised that movement and muscle shortening are directly coupled. Therefore, we assumed that storage and release of strain energy must be considered. The work demands for depression equal 0.014 J. The amount of energy storable in only three pairs of head ligaments can be estimated between 0.008 J and 0.05 J. The use of strain energy implies initial blocking and subsequent triggering of the movement. The position of the hyalomandibular connection, dorsal to the mandibular-suspensorial articulation, appears to be of crucial importance in balancing the forces of sternohyoideus and the body muscles. Triggering at the onset of jaw depression occurs by the contraction of the levator operculi. The line of action of the hyalomandibular connection is lowered beneath the jaw suspension, which raises the equilibrium of forces. Elastic recoil can occur thereafter.

    Description: The evolutionary emergence of humans’ remarkably economical walking gait remains a focus of research and debate, but experimentally validated approaches linking locomotor capability to postcranial anatomy are limited. In this study, we integrated 3D morphometrics of hominoid pelvic shape with experimental measurements of hip kinematics and kinetics during walking and climbing, hamstring activity, and passive range of hip extension in humans, apes, and other primates to assess arboreal–terrestrial trade-offs in ischium morphology among living taxa. We show that hamstring-powered hip extension during habitual walking and climbing in living apes and humans is strongly predicted, and likely constrained, by the relative length and orientation of the ischium. Ape pelves permit greater extensor moments at the hip, enhancing climbing capability, but limit their range of hip extension, resulting in a crouched gait. Human pelves reduce hip extensor moments but permit a greater degree of hip extension, which greatly improves walking economy (i.e., distance traveled/energy consumed). Applying these results to fossil pelves suggests that early hominins differed from both humans and extant apes in having an economical walking gait without sacrificing climbing capability. Ardipithecus was capable of nearly human-like hip extension during bipedal walking, but retained the capacity for powerful, ape-like hip extension during vertical climbing. Hip extension capability was essentially human-like in Australopithecus afarensis and Australopithecus africanus, suggesting an economical walking gait but reduced mechanical advantage for powered hip extension during climbing.

    Description: Lactobacillus acidophilus is a Gram-positive lactic acid bacterium that has had widespread historical use in the dairy industry and more recently as a probiotic. Although L. acidophilus has been designated as safe for human consumption, increasing commercial regulation and clinical demands for probiotic validation has resulted in a need to understand its genetic diversity. By drawing on large, well-characterised collections of lactic acid bacteria, we examined L. acidophilus isolates spanning 92 years and including multiple strains in current commercial use. Analysis of the whole genome sequence data set (34 isolate genomes) demonstrated L. acidophilus was a low diversity, monophyletic species with commercial isolates essentially identical at the sequence level. Our results indicate that commercial use has domesticated L. acidophilus with genetically stable, invariant strains being consumed globally by the human population.     Description: Environmental manipulation studies are integral to determining biological consequences of climate warming. Open Top Chambers (OTCs) have been widely used to assess summer warming effects on terrestrial biota, with their effects during other seasons normally being given less attention even though chambers are often deployed year-round. In addition, their effects on temperature extremes and freeze-thaw events are poorly documented. To provide robust documentation of the microclimatic influences of OTCs throughout the year, we analysed temperature data from 20 studies distributed across polar and alpine regions. The effects of OTCs on mean temperature showed a large range (-0.9 to 2.1 ˚C) throughout the year but did not differ significantly between studies. Increases in mean monthly and diurnal temperature were strongly related (R 2 = 0.70) with irradiance, indicating that PAR can be used to predict the mean warming effect of OTCs. Deeper snow trapped in OTCs also induced higher temperatures at soil/vegetation level. OTC-induced changes in the frequency of freeze-thaw events included an increase in autumn and decreases in spring and summer. Frequency of high temperature events in OTCs increased in spring, summer and autumn compared to non-manipulated control plots. Frequency of low temperature events was reduced by deeper snow accumulation and higher mean temperatures. The strong interactions identified between aspects of ambient environmental conditions and effects of OTCs suggest that a detailed knowledge of snow depth, temperature and irradiance levels enables us to predict how OTCs will modify the microclimate at a particular site and season. Such predictive power allows a better mechanistic understanding of observed biotic response to experimental warming studies and for more informed design of future experiments. However, a need remains to quantify OTC effects on water availability and wind speed (affecting, for example, drying rates and water stress) in combination with microclimate measurements at organism level. © 2012 Blackwell Publishing Ltd
