    Notes: Sulphuric acid production - state of the art. Apart from pyrites and other metal sulfides, sulphur is mainly used today as raw material for the production of sulphuric acid. The oxidation of roaster gases or sulphur combustion gases is performed almost exclusively in multistage reactors over catalysts containing vanadium pentoxide. SO2 conversions of more than 99.5% are achieved by intermediate absorption of SO3 (“double catalysis”) and by using efficient catalysts. To further improve the economics of the manufacturing process, new technologies are being tried out, and attempts are being made to develop even more active catalysts. Although there is still some uncertainty regarding the kinetics of SO2 oxidation, empirical findings can be explained quite satisfactorily with existing models.

    Description / Table of Contents: Heterosiloxanes of Copper, Silver, and GoldThe reaction of anhydrous copper(I) chloride with sodium trimethylsilanolate in tetrahydrofurane leads to the exceedingly soluble tetrameric trimethylsiloxycopper (1). Other heterosiloxanes with the hitherto unknown linkages Cu-O-Si, Ag-O-Si and Au-O-Si are obtained from NaOSi(CH3)3 with trimethylphosphine complexes of the coinage metals of the general formula [(CH3)3P]nMX, where M = Cu, Ag, and n = 1, 2, 3, or M = Au and n = 1. With gold, where the (C6H5)3P- and (C6H5)3As-complexes have also been synthesized, only monomeric species are found, having two-coordinate metal atoms. The copper and silver siloxanes are oligomers with bridging silanolate groups between metals with coordination numbers 3 and 4.
    Notes: Die Reaktion von wasserfreiem Kupfer(I)-chlorid und Natriumtrimethylsilanolat in Tetrahydrofuran liefert ein gut lösliches tetrameres Trimethylsiloxykupfer (1). Auch mit Trimethylphosphin-Komplexen der Edelmetallhalogenide vom Typ [(CH3)3P]nMX mit M = Cu, Ag und n = 1, 2, 3 sowie M = Au und n = 1 reagiert NaOSi(CH3)3 zu weiteren Heterosiloxanen mit den bisher wenig oder nicht bekannten Struktureinheiten Cu-O-Si, Ag-O-Si und Au-O-Si (2-8). Während bei den Goldverbindungen (hier wurden auch die (C6H5)3P-und (C6H5)3As-Komplexe erhalten) einfache monomere Strukturen mit der Koordinationszahl 2 am Goldatom gefunden werden, existieren die Kupfer- und Silbersiloxane als Oligomere, in denen Silanolatgruppen eine Brückenfunktion zwischen Metallatomen mit den Koordinationszahlen 3 und 4 übernehmen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Complexes of the Alkali Silanolate ClustersThe various cluster-type oligomers of the alkali trimethylsilanolates Li-, Na-, and K-OSi(CH3)3 were found to form tetrameric 1:1 complexes with trimethylphosphine oxide (1-3). These compounds are assigned a cubane structure, with the metals being in a tetrahedral coordination sphere, on the basis of molecular weight measurements and analytical and spectroscopic data. The stability of the complexes is shown to decrease with increasing radius of the metals.
    Notes: Die je nach Aggregatzustand und Lösungsmittel in verschiedenen cluster-artigen Oligomeren vorkommenden Alkali-trimethylsilanolate Li-, Na- oder K-OSi(CH3)3 bilden mit Trimethyl-phosphinoxid tetramere Komplexe (1-3), denen auf Grund von analytischen Daten, Molekulargewichtsbestimmungen und spektroskopischen Befunden eine Kuban-Struktur mit tetraedrisch koordinierten Metallatomen zugeschrieben wird. Die Beständigkeit der Koordinationsverbindungen nimmt mit der Größe des Metallatoms rasch ab.

    Description / Table of Contents: Heterosiloxanes of Platinum and IridiumThe platinumsiloxanes cis-(R3P)2Pt{OSi(CH3)3}2, R= CH3 and C6H5, and the iridiumsiloxane trans-(R3P)2Ir(CO)OSi(CH3)3, R=C6H5, have been prepared from suitable metal halide phosphine complexes and sodium trimethylsilanolate. These heterosiloxanes contain the new Si-O-Pt and Si-O-Ir linkages. Analogous palladium siloxanes could not be obtained in this way.
    Notes: Durch die Umsetzung geeigneter Metallhalogenidphosphinkomplexe mit Alkalitrimethylsilanolat werden die Platinsiloxane cis-(R3P)2Pt{OSi(CH3)3}2, R= CH3 und C6H5, und das Iridiumsiloxan trans-(R3P)2Ir(CO)OSi(CH3)3, R=C6H5, erhalten. Diese Verbindungen enthalten die bisher nicht bekannten Si -O-Pt- und Si-O-Ir-Struktureinheiten. Entsprechende Palladiumsiloxane waren auf dem gleichen Weg nicht zugänglich.

    Description / Table of Contents: Stable Copper and Silver Derivatives of Phosphorus YlidesTrimethylmethylenephosphorane has been shown to form an ionic 2:1 complex with (CH3)3PCuCl, of the formula [(CH3)3PCH2CuCH 2P(CH3)3]Cl (1). With (CH3)3SiCH2Cu, the molecular species (CH3)3SiCH2CuCH2P(CH3)3 (4) has been isolated, while with CuCl a novel eight-membered heterocycle [(CH3)2P(CH2)2Cu]2 (5)ist formed in a trans-ylidation reaction. The composition and structure of these unusual organocopper compounds have been proved by analytical and spectroscopic methods. The crystal structure of compound 5 has been determined elsewhere. - A silver analogue of 5 (6) is obtained from (CH3)3PAgCl (or AgCl) and (CH3)3PCH2. The detection of 1H-C-107, 109Ag and 31P-C-107,109Ag spin-spin-interactions in the n. m. r. spectra of 6 provided direct evidence for covalent C-Ag bonding in these molecules. The ylides C6H5(CH3)2PCH2 and CH3(C6H5)2PCH2 are forming similar Cu- and Ag-heterocycles (7a, b, 8a, b), but these compounds are of a markedly reduced thermal and chemical stability if compared with 5 and 6.
    Notes: Trimethylmethylenphosphoran bildet mit (CH3)3PCuCl einen ionogenen 2:1-Komplex der Formel [(CH3)3PCH2CuCH 2P(CH3)3]Cl (1), mit (CH3)3SiCH2Cu die Molekülverbindung (CH3)3SiCH2CuCH 2P(CH3)3 (4) und mit CuCl unter Umylidierung den neuartigen achtgliedrigen Heterocyclus [(CH3)2P(CH2)2Cu]2 (5). Die Zusammensetzung und Konstitution dieser kupferorganischen Verbindungen mit stabilisierendem Oniumzentrum wurden mit analytischen und spektroskopischen Methoden sichergestellt. Für 5 liegt von anderer Seite eine Röntgenstrukturanalyse vor. - Aus (CH3)3PCH2 und (CH3)3PAgCl entsteht nur die zu 5 analoge Silberverbindung 6, in deren NMR-Spektren die über echte Ag-C-σ-Bindungen vermittelten Spin-Spin- Wechselwirkungen 1H-C-107,109Ag und 31P-C-107,109Ag beobachtet werden können. Auch die Ylide C6H5(CH3)2PCH2 und CH3(C6H5)2PCH2 bilden derartige Cu- und Ag- Heterocyclen, die jedoch im Gegensatz zu 5 und 6 nur geringe thermische und chemische Beständigkeit aufzuweisen haben (7a, b, 8a, b).
