Notes: Photon stimulated current measurements have been performed on red mercuric iodide single crystals in order to determine the trap energy, trap density, and capture cross section for different trapping levels that may be present in the platelet-shaped single crystals of red mercuric iodide grown by polymer controlled growth technique in vapor phase. The procedure of analysis of these measurements is outlined in brief. The analysis has shown that these crystals in general possess four trapping levels: two electron trapping levels with energies 0.10 and 0.31 eV and two hole trapping levels with energies 0.15 and 0.59 eV. The analysis has further shown that the total trap density is only of the order of 1013/cm3, indicating the superiority of this growth technique over other techniques. The analysis has also shown that all four trapping levels are of retrapping type. Finally, the possible mechanisms of formation of these trapping levels and the ways in which these trapping levels will influence the detector operation at room temperature are discussed.

Notes: Polycrystalline samples of Pb0.92(La1−zLiz)0.08(Zr0.60Ti0.40)0.98+0.04zO3 (z=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 0.7) have been prepared using the metal-alkoxide sol-gel technique. Differential thermal analysis and x-ray diffraction studies show that the above materials can be formed in a single-phase perovskite structure at 550 °C. The formation of grain structure, particle size, and their distributions have been studied by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. Systematic studies of compositional dependence of ferroelectric properties [dielectric constant (ε), dielectric loss (tan δ), remanent polarization (Pr), coercive field (Ec), piezoelectric coefficients, and pyroelectric coefficient (pT)] of the compounds have been done. High value of dielectric constant ∼104, remanent polarization (14–24 μC cm−2), pyroelectric coefficient (46–57 nC cm−2 K−1) and small piezoelectric parameters have been observed for all the compounds with z=0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, and 0.7. The coercive field increased with increasing Li+ concentration to a maximum of 6.98 kV cm−1 for z=0.7. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Bi2S3 thin films have been prepared by the dip-dry method and their electrical properties such as conductivity, thermoelectric power and spectral response of photoconductivity were investigated. Some uncommon findings, such as a simultaneous increase in conductivity and thermoelectric power with thickness of film, are explained by Seto's model for polycrystalline silicon film duly modified for in homogeneities.

Notes: Abstract The PbS-Si (1 1 1) heterostructures were fabricated by various chemical methods. lt has been observed that uniform single and multilayer PbS films, which are mostly polycrystalline, could be prepared. Strongly oriented films have also been deposited by the Davis and Norr method. Substrate preparation prior to the deposition of the films, is found to have a more pronounced effect on the first layer, rather than on the subsequent layers. Orientation of these films is observed to change with the thickness and etchants used in this study. As film thickness increases, size defects and strain defects decrease for these heterostructures. An anisotropy is noted in domain size end strain in these films.

Notes: Abstract The effects of sintering temperature and time of PbS pellets made by cold pressing of beneficiated galena ore on the room temperature resistivity and room temperature thermoelectric power are reported. The increased resistivity of such pellets with increasing sintering time has been explained in terms of a possible reaction between PbS and PbO leading to compensation of “p”-type conductivity. The increase in thermoelectric power with sintering temperature and time has been explained on the basis of inhomogeneity in the sample following Kwok's approach.

Notes: Abstract A critical assessment of nonstoichiometry that can occur in zinc oxide at various temperatures and oxygen pressures has been made using the concepts of equilibrium thermodynamics. The feasibility of producing transparent conducting films of aluminium-doped zinc oxide by spray pyrolysis of organo-zinc salt solution containing aluminium chloride is also discussed.

Notes: Summary α-Methyl styrène polymerization was carried out using t-BuCl/Et2AlCl/CH2Cl2 system in the temperature range of 0° to −63.5°C. The effect of temperature on yield and molecular weights of Poly α-Methyl styrene was determined. Based on Arrhenius plots, average activation energies of molecular weights were determined to be −9.2 ± 1.0 K cal/mole. (0° to 40°C) and 0 ± 0.5 K cal/mole (−40° to −63.5°C). These were postulated to reflect the molecular weight governing mechanisms such as transfer to monomer and termination respectively.
