    Notes: Abstract  Sipadan Island is a small oceanic island with limited storage of fresh groundwater. A study was carried out to determine the effect of tidal change on the groundwater quality of such an island using temperature, dissolved oxygen content, conductivity, salinity, and pH values as indicators. Overall, the results indicated that the groundwater quality changes with tides, but the trends of fluctuation differs between the observed parameters. It was found that the percentages of changes during the period of study were 0.8% (temperature), 53% (dissolved oxygen), 61% (conductivity), 58% (salinity), and 1.7% (pH) at the centre of the island; and 0.9% (temperature), 33% (dissolved oxygen), 40% (conductivity), 42% (salinity), and 9% (pH) at a station 120 m from the coast, based on 2.9-m and 2.8-m tidal ranges at each station.

    Notes: Abstract Complex impedances of some magnesium–zinc ferrites, MgxZn1-xFe2O4 (x=0.4, 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7), in the frequency range of 1 mHz–10 MHz were measured at 300 K. The complex-plane impedance spectrum from each sample indicates that the capacitive and the resistive properties of the materials are mainly attributed to the processes that associated with the bulk (grain) and the grain boundary. A low-frequency dispersion (LFD) and a negative capacitance regions are also observed at low frequencies. A small series resistance of about the same value for all samples is also observed. The bulk and the grain boundary components are analysed by assuming a two-layer leaky capacitor. The simulated complex impedances using the Cole–Cole expression are in agreement with the measured values. The dielectric properties of the materials are attributed to the interfacial polarization and LFD at low frequencies and the orientational polarization at high frequencies. These properties result in the dielectric loss which composed of a Debye-like loss peak at high frequency end and a strong LFD below 1 Hz. Both regions exhibit universality with regard to the power-law relation between the dielectric loss (ε″r or χ″) and frequency as given by ε″r∝ωn-1, where n=0.14 and n=0.02, respectively. The exponent is marginally negative, n=−0.03, in the region of negative capacitance below 3–4 mHz. The variations of the above properties and the characteristic parameters for different compositions of the Mg–Zn ferrites are discussed.

    Description: The accurate calculation of the frictional heat generated between the contacting surfaces of friction clutch elements during the slipping period due to the relative motion between the driving and driven parts is considered to be an essential factor for automotive designers. A numerical model of a single-disc clutch was built using the finite element method to investigate the effect of frictional facing thickness on the heat generation and distribution between the contacting surfaces of the flywheel, friction clutch disc and pressure plate. A sequentially coupled thermal-mechanical approach was used to simulate the thermal-elastic coupling that occurs in dry friction clutches during the slipping period. An axisymmetric finite element model was used to represent the single-disc clutch system at the start of the engagement.     Description: In this paper, the scaling effect of ball grid array (BGA) device on the capillary underfill (CUF) flow and its velocity profiles is thoroughly investigated by means of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) numerical simulation. It is found that generally the flows front profiles attained from device of different scale sizes are comparable to the actual miniature BGA, with relative error approximately under 10%. Based on dimensionless number analysis, the scaling limit is estimated at 20, to maintain low scaling error. The velocity profiles attained on the CUF flow in each models of different scales are relative similar in magnitude and trend. Although the increases in gap height reduces the strength of capillary flow, the flow’s velocity still be maintained and the scaling effect is counter-balance with the increases in driving pressure force.     Description: Optimization of the capillary underfill (CUF) encapsulation process is vital to enhance the package’s reliability. Therefore, the design and sizing of the newly developed ball grid array (BGA) device must be considered so that it is compatible with the CUF process. The scaling effect of BGA on CUF flow and its dynamic properties is thoroughly investigated by means of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) numerical simulation. This paper generally highlighted the differences in CUF flow behaviours, together with the pressure distributions between the actual industrial size BGA and the scaled up models for large BGA setup. While flow front profiles appeared to be similar across BGA of various sizes at relative error less than 10%, the CUF filling time gradually increases as the BGA become larger.     Description: Plastic associates products based have been considered as the world most consumer packaging solution. However, substantial quantities of plastic consumption have led to exponential increase of plastic derived waste. Recycling of plastic waste as valued added product such as concrete appears as one of promising solution for alternative use of plastic waste. This paper summarized recent progress on the development of concrete mixture which incorporates plastic wastes as partial aggregate replacement during concrete manufacturing. A collection of data from previous studies that have been researched which employed plastic waste in concrete mixtures were evaluated and conclusions are drawn based on the laboratory results of all the mentioned research papers studied.

    Description: There is a processing need for a fast, easy and accurate classification system for oil palm fruit ripeness. Such a system will be invaluable to farmers and plantation managers who need to sell their oil palm fresh fruit bunch (FFB) for the mill as this will avoid disputes. In this paper,a new approach was developed under the name of expert rules-based systembased on the image processing techniques results of thethree different oil palm FFB region of interests (ROIs), namely; ROI1 (300x300 pixels), ROI2 (50x50 pixels) and ROI3 (100x100 pixels). The results show that the best rule-based ROIs for statistical colour feature extraction with k-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifier at 94% were chosen as well as the ROIs that indicated results higher than the rule-based outcome, such as the ROIs of statistical colour feature extraction with artificial neural network (ANN) classifier at 94%, were selected for further FFB ripeness inspection system.

    Description: We show that spherical infall models (SIMs) can better describe some galaxy clusters in redshift slice space than in traditional axially convolved projection space. This is because in SIM, the presence of transverse motion between cluster and observer, and/or shear flow about the cluster (such as rotation), causes the infall artifact to tilt, obscuring the characteristic two-trumpet profile; and some clusters resemble such tilted artifacts. We illustrate the disadvantages of applying SIM to convolved data and, as an alternative, introduce a method fitting a tilted 2D envelope to determine a 3D envelope. We also introduce a fitting algorithm and test it on toy SIM simulations as well as three clusters (Virgo, A1459 and A1066). We derive relations useful for using the tilt and width-to-length ratio of the fitted envelopes to analyse peculiar velocities. We apply them to our three clusters as a demonstration. We find that transverse motion between cluster and observer can be ruled out as sole cause of the observed tilts, and that a multicluster study could be a feasible way to find our infall towards Virgo cluster.
