Abstract A high-resolution network of stations was established to measure the low-level wind field on a tropical island. The observed wind variations were found to be both diurnal and semi-diurnal. It is suggested that these variations are associated with the solar diurnal and semi-diurnal tides, the topographv of the island, and a shallow land-sea breeze regime coupled with the heated island phenomenon.
