    Notes: A flexible, general purpose, portable and autonomous data-acquisition system is presented. Data are stored on a nine-track IBM-format compatible digital magnetic tape recorder. The hardware allows data capture from 1 to 16 channels and with 12-bit resolution at speeds of up to 24 kHz, for relevant long time intervals. A special buffer has been also designed to support noninterleaved operation at the maximum transfer rates for both the analog-to-digital converter and the storage device.

    Notes: Summary To investigate the effect of atmospheric turbulence on microwave communication links, temperature and water vapor pressure have been measured and radio refractivity has been computed, during different meteorological conditions, in the atmospheric boundary layer of an urban site. The cospectra between temperature (T) and water vapor pressure (e) have been found to be either negative over the whole range of frequencies, or the low-frequency end of the cospectrum is of opposite sign relative to higher frequency end. In both cases cospectra follow a−5/3 law in the inertial subrange, in agreement with the theoretical predictions. The coherence spectra clearly show that the temperature and humidity fluctuations are highly coherent within the inertial subrange under both convective and stable conditions. The relative contribution ofC T 2 ,C eT andC e 2 to the real refractive index structure parameterC n 2 is examined and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract —This paper deals with a new broadband atmospheric model designed for predicting the total and diffuse solar radiation incident on the earth’s surface in medium or large-sized coastal or near-coastal cities, under a clear or cloudy sky. The revised solar spectrum is used. The atmospheric transmittance of each atmospheric parameter contributing to solar radiation depletion, water vapor, ozone, uniformly mixed gases, molecules and aerosols, is calculated using parameterized expressions resulting from integrated spectral transmittance functions. The beam and diffuse radiation components are obtained as a function of the specific atmospheric transmittances. The model requires the following parameters as inputs: total water vapor and ozone amount in a vertical column, sunshine duration and the surface albedo. The model has been used for validation purposes at two stations with slightly different characteristics (NOA and Penteli) in the Athens basin, where total and diffuse radiation measurements are available, for a period of 34 months for NOA and 23 for Penteli. The NOA station is located on a small hill (107 m a.m.s.l.) near the center of Athens, while the Penteli station (500 m a.m.s.l.) is situated in a relatively less polluted area in northern Athens. The clear sky part of the model was tested for 70 individual “clear” days with 2-minute intervals, while the whole model was checked with monthly “mean” days and mean hourly values. A close agreement between the calculated and the measured values of total and diffuse solar radiation is observed.

    Notes: Abstract A description of two real-time color display techniques for high-frequency acoustic sounders is presented. The on-line false-color display techniques presented are those produced by a color ink-jet printer and a color video graphics array. These techniques are thoroughly described using data obtained from a recent experiment. It seems that the relatively low cost of the required instrumentation combined with the definite advantages of the method, makes these techniques feasible for all users.

    Notes: Summary  According to past experience, the nearly stagnant conditions caused by the presumed equilibrium between the Saronikos Gulf sea breeze and an opposing synoptic flow is identified as the principal mechanism leading to high pollution episodes in Athens during the summer. However, previous experimental work has not examined in detail the interaction of the sea breeze flow with the opposing background flow. In this context, recent experimental work covering the basic key-locations of the Athens Basin focused on the inland propagation of the southerly sea breeze from the coast to the northern part of the basin mainly under moderate northerly background wind. During this campaign, a network of four meteorological stations established along the Athens Basin and a high range acoustic sounder at the centre of Athens operated over a two months time period in the summer of 1993. In addition, tethered balloon flights in the centre of Athens and on a sea vessel about 15 km offshore were employed during an experimental day with moderate opposing background wind. The results from this experimental campaign include the documentation of the sea breeze delay and its intensity as a function of a sea breeze index and features of the vertical structure of the sea breeze over land as well as over sea.

    Notes: Abstract The purpose of this study is to present a new simple model algorithm for simulating the solar ultaviolet radiation reaching the surface of the Earth. The algorithm is capable of providing both the direct and diffuse solar ultraviolet radiation, for different atmospheric conditions, time, and geographic locations. An application of the model relates to the calculation of the minimum energy input of ultraviolet radiation to be received by a human to allow an erythema development.

    Notes: Abstract Field measurements of wind, air temperature and humidity were taken at the eastern part of the Attika district in June 1991, to examine the topographic influences exerted on the local sea breezes. These influences are due either to the elongated Evia island, faced by the northern half of Attica coastline some tens of kilometers offshore, or to the coast-parallel range of Hymettos mountain, rising steeply 12 km onshore. The instrumentation consisted mainly of three tethered meteorological balloons released at characteristic sires (i.e., the coast, a location between shoreline and mountain foot and the mountain top) and three autographic ground-based anemometers operating at selected locations. Data from the ground-based and upper air stations of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, as well as the diurnal weather maps were also obtained and analyzed. Observations were made under different synoptic wind and the latter was found to determine remarkably the significance of the topographic effects. A preliminary two-dimensional numerical approach was also made concerning the sea breeze capability to reach the Hymettos mountain top in the case of a weak opposing geostrophic flow.

    Notes: Abstract Mortality and morbidity indices are known to depend on changes in meteorological conditions. In Athens, severe adverse health effects following extreme heat conditions have been reported. The usefulness has been investigated of the complex thermohygrometric index (THI), a simple index based on maximum daily temperature and relative humidity, in predicting the health effects of specific meteorological conditions. The values of THI were found to correlate well with more complex bioclimatic indices; the THI could successfully replace temperature and humidity in predicting the daily number of deaths through multiple linear regression modelling. Thus the introduction of THI levels more than 28.5° C and between 26.5 and 28.5° C, through dummy variables, in a regression model explained 40% of the variability in the number of deaths during the months of July and August. During days with THI values less than 26.5° C the mean number of deaths was 33.5, compared to 41.8 when THI was between 26.5 and 28.5° C. The daily number of deaths increased to 108.2 when THI exceeded 28.5° C. From this study, the exact level of THI at which public health measures must be taken was not clear and more work is needed to identify it. However, given its simplicity, the use of THI for predicting meteorological conditions which are adverse to health would appear to be promising in preventive medicine and in health services planning.
