    Notes: . Mytilophilus pacificae is an endocommensal ciliate found in the mantle cavity of the Pacific Coast mussel Mytilus californianus. In this paper we report our findings on pellicular organization of this species. Transmission and scanning electron microscope examination of the somatic cortex revealed that a number of different types of kinetids, i.e. monokinetids, dikinetids, and polykinetids are found in the locomotor cortex. The type and distribution of the kinetids are described. Surprisingly, the locomotor region was found to be highly variable among individuals with respect to its kinetid distribution; each cell appears to have its own characteristic kinetid pattern. Some cells have mostly monokinetids and dikinetids in their locomotor cortex, while others may have dikinetids and polykinetids but very few monokinetids. In contrast to the locomotor region, the thigmotactic field (a region specialized for attachment) is exclusively composed of dikinetids and shows no heterogeneity. The finding of ultrastructural variability in the locomotor cortex was unexpected since, in the view of the structural conservation hypothesis, the somatic cortex is seen as a “stable” element. These observations raise new questions with regard to cortical pattern formation in this organism.

    Notes: SYNOPSIS. The structure of Conchophthirus curtus is described in detail, based on observations by light microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Characters of taxonomic importance are described from study of specimens representative of populations of the ciliate collected from 5 localities in Illinois. Variations within and between populations are indicated. New observations include a thoro description of the buccal cavity with its 3 polykineties, a haplokinety, and a deep kinetosomal unit. The somatic ciliature is differentiated into locomotor, thigmotactic, vestibular and caudal regions. In discussion of the systematic position of Conchophthirus, critical review of its past assignments is included; and comments on both the higher and lower levels of taxonomy of the “thigmotrichs” and their relatives are offered.

    Notes: Trypanosoma lucknowi n. sp. was isolated in culture from one of 126 Macaca mulatta originating from the vicinity of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. Trypanosoma lucknowi is distinctive because of the large number of epimastigotes and trypomastigotes which, in culture, exhibit no movement or only a slight bending of the flagellar end. This limited motility coincides with a free flagellum which is either completely absent or rudimentary. The microorganism is cloned readily, and the description is based upon such cultures. Trypanosoma lucknowi shows pronounced differences from other trypanosomes of South Asian macaques and from “aflagellar” African trypanosomes. The ultrastructural demonstration of a cytostome and contractile vacuole suggests ultimate grouping with stercorarian trypanosomes. A 3-D reconstruction of the flagellar pocket/cytostome region is included.

    Notes: . A heat-stable chemoattractant has been isolated from bacterial cultures. This component has a molecular weight in the range of 500–1000 daltons, is produced by both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and serves equally well as an attractant for both the bacterial feeding Paramecium and for its natural predator, Didinium. Aspects of the ecological relationship between bacterial feeding ciliates and their ciliate predators are briefly discussed with respect to responses of both predator and prey to such a common chemotactic bacterial factor.

    Notes: Morphogenesis in Conchophthirus curtus has been investigated by the use of protargol silver impregnation supplemented by selective use of scanning electron microscopy. Events are assigned to nine sequential stages; the last, stage 9, which involves maturation of the somatic ciliature and infraciliature as well as the final development of the buccal cavities of both proter and opisthe, occurs following cytokinesis. Stomatogenesis involves both the parental haplokinety and the deep kinetosomal unit (DKU). In perhaps a unique phenomenon, phylogenetically, the ciliated parental haplokinety forms the early oral primordium of the opisthe and is replaced in the proter by the DKU. The DKU then acts as a formative center for new kinetosomes that migrate into the developing opisthe primordium. Late in the process, the haplokinetal primordia of both proter and opisthe give rise to their respective DKU's. Some events of nuclear activity and somatic development are also described. The high degree of structural differentiation of this ciliate has provided the opportunity to examine temporal relationships during morphogenesis. We have found that somatic, buccal, and nuclear events proceed in a tightly coupled sequence. Hence, somatic and nuclear development can be directly correlated with the nine stages of stomatogenesis.

    Notes: Abstract Continuous cultures ofTetrahymena pyriformis in the infradian (“slow-exponential”) growth mode can be entrained to give circadian rhythms of cell division by the application of thermal cycles with periods of 24 hr. The degree of synchronization (phasing index) is dependent on the cycling of other environmental agents, particularly food in the form of the defined medium used. The phase angles of these multiple zeitgebers to one another and to the circadian cell cycle markedly influence the quality of synchronization achieved. In wellsynchronized oxygen-limited cultures, a circadian cytotoxia (circadian chronotypic death) is observed when the culture's oxygen requirements periodically exceed the oxygen support limit of the environment.
