    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉SUMMARY〈/div〉Temporal aliasing errors induced by high-frequency tidal and non-tidal mass variability in the Earth system are among the three most important error sources that limit the accuracy of present-day surface mass estimates from satellite gravimetry. By means of end-to-end simulations, we demonstrate that the Kalman Smoother approach developed by Kurtenbach 〈span〉et al.〈/span〉 effectively captures non-tidal submonthly variability, and thereby reduces temporal aliasing errors way beyond the level of simply subtracting the standard dealiasing model AOD1B. Validation against 〈span〉in situ〈/span〉 ocean bottom pressure observations confirms that the Kalman Smoother solutions published together with the ITSG-Grace2016 monthly gravity fields contain high-frequency signal over the oceans not predicted by AOD1B. The daily gravity fields therefore reduce aliasing artefacts in the monthly gravity fields, and at the same time provide observational evidence on submonthly bottom pressure variability presently not reflected in state-of-the-art numerical ocean circulation models. It is thus recommended to include a Kalman Smoother approach into any standard GRACE processing scheme. For a hypothetical double-pair configuration currently under consideration as a future mass change mission, we find that the benefit of the Kalman Smoother is much smaller thanks to the increased number of observations taken at different inclinations, which lead to generally reduced aliasing errors and much more isotropic spatial error correlations. We also reassess the idea of pre-eliminating low-resolution daily gravity fields and find large distortions in the monthly mean gravity solution at spatial wavelengths around the cut-off-degree of the daily fields. We thus recommend further study for any satellite gravity mission concept that critically relies on such pre-elimination schemes for reaching its science objectives.〈/span〉

    Description: This contribution presents the state of the art of economy-wide material flow accounting. Starting from a brief recollection of the intellectual and policy history of this approach, we outline system definition, key methodological assumptions, and derived indicators. The next section makes an effort to establish data reliability and uncertainty for a number of existing multinational (European and global) material flow accounting (MFA) data compilations and discusses sources of inconsistencies and variations for some indicators and trends. The results show that the methodology has reached a certain maturity: Coefficients of variation between databases lie in the range of 10% to 20%, and correlations between databases across countries amount to an average  R 2 of 0.95. After discussing some of the research frontiers for further methodological development, we conclude that the material flow accounting framework and the data generated have reached a maturity that warrants material flow indicators to complement traditional economic and demographic information in providing a sound basis for discussing national and international policies for sustainable resource use.

    Description: The concept that alterated communications between the gut microbiome and the brain may play an important role in human brain disorders has recently received considerable attention. This is the result of provocative preclinical and some clinical evidence supporting early hypotheses about such communication in health and disease. Gastrointestinal symptoms are a common comorbidity in patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), even though the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. In addition, alteration in the composition and metabolic products of the gut microbiome has long been implicated as a possible causative mechanism contributing to ASD pathophysiology, and this hypothesis has been supported by several recently published evidence from rodent models of autism induced by prenatal insults to the mother. Recent evidence in one such model involving maternal infection, that is characterized by alterations in behavior, gut physiology, microbial composition, and related metabolite profile, suggests a possible benefit of probiotic treatment on several of the observed abnormal behaviors. While proposed rodent models for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are limited in modeling the complex human clinical phenotype(s) of ASD, they show both face and construct validity for several behavioral, gut physiological, brain signaling, and gut microbiome-related endophenotypes. Some of these models support a key role of alterations in the gut microbiome and its metabolism in the pathophysiology of ASD and common comorbidities.

    Description: Intracellular membrane fusion is crucial for the biogenesis and maintenance of cellular compartments, for vesicular traffic between them, and for exo- and endocytosis. Parts of the molecular machinery underlying this process have been identified, but most of these components operate in mutual recognition of the membranes. Here it is shown that protein phosphatase 1 (PP1) is essential for bilayer mixing, the last step of membrane fusion. PP1 was also identified in a complex that contained calmodulin, the second known factor implicated in the regulation of bilayer mixing.     Description: Further efforts to reduce the air pollution from traffic are undertaken worldwide and the filtration of exhaust gas will also be increasingly applied on gasoline cars (GPF) … gasoline particle filter). In the present paper, some results of investigations of nanoparticles from four MPI gasoline cars are represented. The measurements were performed at vehicle tailpipe and in CVS-tunnel. Moreover, two variants of GPF were investigated on a high-emitting modern vehicle, including analytics of PAH and attempts of soot loading in road application. The modern MPI vehicles can emit a considerable amount of PN, which in some cases attains the level of Diesel exhaust gas without DPF and can pass over the actual European limit value for GDI (6.0 × 10 11 #/km).     Description: In the age of stem cell engineering it is critical to understand how stem cell activity is regulated during regeneration. Hairs are mini-organs that undergo cyclic regeneration throughout adult life, and are an important model for organ regeneration. Hair stem cells located in the follicle bulge are regulated by the surrounding microenvironment, or niche. The activation of such stem cells is cyclic, involving periodic beta-catenin activity. In the adult mouse, regeneration occurs in waves in a follicle population, implying coordination among adjacent follicles and the extrafollicular environment. Here we show that unexpected periodic expression of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (Bmp2) and Bmp4 in the dermis regulates this process. This BMP cycle is out of phase with the WNT/beta-catenin cycle, thus dividing the conventional telogen into new functional phases: one refractory and the other competent for hair regeneration, characterized by high and low BMP signalling, respectively. Overexpression of noggin, a BMP antagonist, in mouse skin resulted in a markedly shortened refractory phase and faster propagation of the regenerative wave. Transplantation of skin from this mutant onto a wild-type host showed that follicles in donor and host can affect their cycling behaviours mutually, with the outcome depending on the equilibrium of BMP activity in the dermis. Administration of BMP4 protein caused the competent region to become refractory. These results show that BMPs may be the long-sought 'chalone' inhibitors of hair growth postulated by classical experiments. Taken together, results presented in this study provide an example of hierarchical regulation of local organ stem cell homeostasis by the inter-organ macroenvironment. The expression of Bmp2 in subcutaneous adipocytes indicates physiological integration between these two thermo-regulatory organs.
