    Description: Africa is inferred to be the continent of origin for all modern human populations, but the details of human prehistory and evolution in Africa remain largely obscure owing to the complex histories of hundreds of distinct populations. We present data for more than 580,000 SNPs for several hunter-gatherer populations: the Hadza and Sandawe of Tanzania, and the ≠Khomani Bushmen of South Africa, including speakers of the nearly extinct N|u language. We find that African hunter-gatherer populations today remain highly differentiated, encompassing major components of variation that are not found in other African populations. Hunter-gatherer populations also tend to have the lowest levels of genome-wide linkage disequilibrium among 27 African populations. We analyzed geographic patterns of linkage disequilibrium and population differentiation, as measured by FST, in Africa. The observed patterns are consistent with an origin of modern humans in southern Africa rather than eastern Africa, as is generally assumed. Additionally, genetic variation in African hunter-gatherer populations has been significantly affected by interaction with farmers and herders over the past 5,000 y, through both severe population bottlenecks and sex-biased migration. However, African hunter-gatherer populations continue to maintain the highest levels of genetic diversity in the world.

    Description: Borate melts containing 〈 20 mol% Na 2 O have been studied using high-energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Temperature dependencies of the mean B–O bond lengths are shown to vary strongly with soda content, by comparison to previous measurements on liquid B 2 O 3 and Na 2 B 4 O 7 . Whereas in liquid B 2 O 3 linear thermal expansion of the BØ 3 units is observed, with coefficient α BO  = 3.7(2) x 10 -6  K −1 , this expansion is apparently slightly suppressed in melts containing 〈 20 mol% Na 2 O, and is dramatically reversed at the diborate composition. These effects are interpreted in terms of changes in the mean B–O coordination number, where the reaction BØ 4 – + BØ 3 ⇌ BØ 3 + BØ 2 O – shifts to the right with increasing temperature. The empirical bond valence relationship is used to convert measured bond lengths, r BO , to coordination numbers, n BO , including a correction for the expected thermal expansion. This method is more accurate and precise than direct determination of n BO from peak areas in the radial distribution functions. Gradients of Δ n BO /Δ T = –3.4(3) × 10 -4 K −1 close to the diborate composition, and Δ n BO /Δ T = –0.3(1) × 10 -4 K −1 for a 13(3) mol% Na 2 O melt are observed, in reasonable agreement with Raman spectroscopic observations and thermodynamic modelling, with some quantitative differences. These observations go toward explaining isothermal viscosity maxima and changes in fragility across the sodium borate system. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

    Description: Weyl semimetals are of great interest because they provide the first realization of the Weyl fermion, exhibit exotic quantum anomalies, and host Fermi arc surface states. The separation between Weyl nodes of opposite chirality gives a measure of the robustness of the Weyl semimetal state. To exploit the novel phenomena that arise from Weyl fermions in applications, it is crucially important to find robust separated Weyl nodes. We propose a methodology to design robust Weyl semimetals with well-separated Weyl nodes. Using this methodology as a guideline, we search among the material parameter space and identify by far the most robust and ideal Weyl semimetal candidate in the single-crystalline compound tantalum sulfide (Ta 3 S 2 ) with new and novel properties beyond TaAs. Crucially, our results show that Ta 3 S 2 has the largest k -space separation between Weyl nodes among known Weyl semimetal candidates, which is about twice larger than the measured value in TaAs and 20 times larger than the predicted value in WTe 2 . Moreover, all Weyl nodes in Ta 3 S 2 are of type II. Therefore, Ta 3 S 2 is a type II Weyl semimetal. Furthermore, we predict that increasing the lattice by 〈4% can annihilate all Weyl nodes, driving a novel topological metal-to-insulator transition from a Weyl semimetal state to a topological insulator state. The robust type II Weyl semimetal state and the topological metal-to-insulator transition in Ta 3 S 2 are potentially useful in device applications. Our methodology can be generally applied to search for new Weyl semimetals.

    Description: To meet growing global food demand with limited land and reduced environmental impact, agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are increasingly evaluated with respect to crop productivity, i.e. on a yield-scaled as opposed to area basis. Here, we compiled available field data on CH 4 and N 2 O emissions from rice production systems to test the hypothesis that in response to fertilizer nitrogen (N) addition, yield-scaled global warming potential (GWP) will be minimized at N rates that maximize yields. Within each study, yield N surplus was calculated to estimate deficit or excess N application rates with respect to the optimal N rate (defined as the N rate at which maximum yield was achieved). Relationships between yield N surplus and GHG emissions were assessed using linear and nonlinear mixed-effects models. Results indicate that yields increased moving from deficit to optimal N rates. At N rates contributing to a yield N surplus, N 2 O and yield-scaled N 2 O emissions increased exponentially. In contrast, CH 4 emissions were not impacted by N inputs. Accordingly, yield-scaled CH 4 emissions decreased with N addition. Overall, yield-scaled GWP was minimized at optimal N rates, decreasing by 21% compared to treatments without N addition. These results are unique compared to aerobic cropping systems in which N 2 O emissions are the primary contributor to GWP, meaning yield-scaled GWP may not necessarily decrease for aerobic crops when yields are optimized by N fertilizer additions. Balancing gains in agricultural productivity with climate change concerns, this work supports the concept that high rice yields can be achieved with minimal yield-scaled GWP through optimal N application rates. Moreover, additional improvements in N use efficiency may further reduce yield-scaled GWP, thereby strengthening the economic and environmental sustainability of rice systems.     Description: : A successful approach for predicting functional associations between non-homologous genes is to compare their phylogenetic distributions. We have devised a phylogenetic profiling algorithm, SVD-Phy, which uses truncated singular value decomposition to address the problem of uninformative profiles giving rise to false positive predictions. Benchmarking the algorithm against the KEGG pathway database, we found that it has substantially improved performance over existing phylogenetic profiling methods.     Description: 〈div data-abstract-type="normal"〉〈p〉Seismograms acquired on the McMurdo Ice Shelf, Antarctica, during an Austral summer melt season (November 2016–January 2017) reveal a diurnal cycle of seismicity, consisting of hundreds of thousands of small ice quakes limited to a 6–12 hour period during the evening, in an area where there is substantial subsurface melting. This cycle is explained by thermally induced bending and fracture of a frozen surface superimposed on a subsurface slush/water layer that is supported by solar radiation penetration and absorption. A simple, one-dimensional model of heat transfer driven by observed surface air temperature and shortwave absorption reproduces the presence and absence (as daily weather dictated) of the observed diurnal seismicity cycle. Seismic event statistics comparing event occurrence with amplitude suggest that the events are generated in a fractured medium featuring relatively low stresses, as is consistent with a frozen surface superimposed on subsurface slush.
