Summary The use of fly ash in the construction field encouraged us to study the effects of its incorporation in clay products stabilized with binding materials and obtained by extrusion. The promotion and use of fly ash in such building materials constitute an economical solution to the development of a new building material likely to compete with traditional products such as baked-earth bricks and concrete. The global qualities of the product (mechanical resistance, water resistance and dimensional stability) have been greatly improved thanks to the pozzolanic effect of silico-aluminous fly ash. This effect acts by fixing the lime which is liberated by the binding materials (cement and lime) during hydration reactions and then gives rise to various hydration compounds. This pozzolanic property is highlighted by the X-ray diffraction analysis of samples containing fly ash and comparing these with their respective check-samples. In addition, because of their smaller specific area, fly ash grains seem to increase the amount of free water contained in the mixture studied. Thus, this water will allow more complete hydration of binding materials. The use of this fly ash seems to be beneficial. A further study of its effect on binding material hydration and the evaluation of this hydration against quantity of fly ash is now being carried out. Our initial experimental results confirm our hypotheses.
Notes:
