Description: Here we present high-resolution XRF, grain-size, loss on ignition and glass shard geochemical analysis from sediment cores at fourteen different locations in Lake Iznik. These cores, with lengths between 1.46 and 3.57 m, were collected in April and July 2019 using a UWITEC hammer gravity corer. One of the aims was to differentiate earthquake-triggered deposits from flood-related deposits. To address this question, we used both sedimentology and geochemistry analyses to discuss the different depositional mechanisms and highlight different sources and/or processes. Then, we studied the potential spatial variation in the facies and geochemical signatures of a specific earthquake-induced deposit within the lake subbasins. The occurrence of previously geochemically identified tephra allowed refinement of the age-depth model by comparison with previously established volcanic eruption history (Roeser et al., 2012; doi:10.1016/j.quaint.2012.06.006).

Description: The LOI method allows us to estimate the organic matter and carbonate content of lake sediments. LOI analysis was performed on the IZN19-15 and IZN19-24 cores with a 10-cm sampling interval all along the sequence, following the protocol described by Heiri et al., (2001; doi:10.1023/A:1008119611481).

Description: Grain-size analysis can help to discuss the energy of an event deposit and characterize its transport and depositional mechanism. The grain-size distribution at the event-deposit locations was analysed at a 5 mm vertical sampling interval on 7 cores (IZN19-13, IZN19-20, IZN19-21, IZN19-22, IZN19-24, IZN19-27, IZN19-29). A Beckman Coulter Life Science 13 230 XR laser particle-size analyser was used (EDYTEM Laboratory, University Savoie Mont-Blanc) with sonication to avoid particle flocculation. Two runs with a 30 s-long measurement were applied without any pre-treatment. Grain-size parameters were directly extracted from the Adapt software V. 1.3.337 and Gradistat V9.1 (Blott & Pye, 2001; doi:10.1002/esp.261). The sorting index was calculated according to Folk & Ward (1957; doi:10.1306/74D70646-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D).

Description: High-resolution XRF analysis of sediment cores (IZN19-05, IZN19-07, IZN19-09, IZN19-11, IZN19-13, IZN19-15, IZN19-20, IZN19-21, IZN19-22, IZN19-23, IZN19-24, IZN19-27, IZN19-28 and IZN19-29) from Lake Iznik, NW Turkey. The relative contents of major and trace elements were analysed with an X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Avaatech Core Scanner (EDYTEM Laboratory). The split-core surface was first covered with a 4-μm-thick Ultralene film to avoid contamination and desiccation of the sediment. All cores are registered in the French national cyber-core repository https://www.cybercarotheque.fr and the International Geo Sample Number (IGSN) service https://www.igsn.cnrs.fr/#/search. All cores were collected in April and July, 2019.
