Description: Although climate records from several locations around the world show nearly synchronous and abrupt changes, the nature of the inferred teleconnection is still poorly understood. On the basis of preserved laminations and molybdenum enrichments in open margin sediments we demonstrate that the oxygen content of northeast Pacific waters at 800 m depth during the Bölling-Alleröd warm period (15–13 kyr) was greatly reduced. Existing oxygen isotopic records of benthic and planktonic foraminifera suggest that this was probably due to suppressed ventilation at higher latitudes of the North Pacific. Comparison with ventilation records for the North Atlantic indicates an antiphased pattern of convection relative to the North Pacific over the past 22 kyr, perhaps due to variations in water vapor transport across Central America.

Notes: Atomic force microscopy was employed to quantitatively study the surface relief accompanying martensite and bainite in a Cu–Zn–Al alloy. It is demonstrated that the surface relief angle associated with martensite is 14.3°, in good agreement with the theoretical result deduced from the phenomenal theory of martensite crystallography (PTMC). However, the surface relief angle associated with bainite is 2.0°–3.2°, which disagrees with the PTMC result. This indicates that the transformation mechanism of bainite is different from that of martensite. The fine structures of the surface relief associated with martensite and bainite are also investigated. The surface relief of martensite is composed of the small parallel relief caused by small martensite plates, and that of bainite is composed of small cells induced by subunits in bainite. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report a new design for an acoustically resonant photoacoustic cell with high performance. A cylindrical cell with suitable size was selected so that the resonant frequency of the first radial mode was equal to that of a longitudinal higher mode. The ends of the cell have a pair of thin coaxial tubes which lengths are 1/2 and 1/4 of acoustic wavelength λ, respectively. The λ/4 acoustic resonance makes a coupling between the first radial resonance and the higher longitudinal resonance, then leads to an acoustic energy concentrating in the middle of the cell. Thus, the surface loss was decreased, the acoustic quality factor and pressure amplitude increased obviously as compared with conventional radial resonant cylindrical cell. The ability to measure absorption coefficients as low as 2.43×10−9 cm−1 (1:1 signal to noise level) has been achieved. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) particles have been synthesized by the hydrothermal method using NH3·H2O as a pH adjustment mineralizer. Experimental results showed that ZnAl2O4 particle size was dependent on the precursor pH, and could be controlled through pH adjustment. It was 5.5, 11.5, and 27 nm when the precursor pH was 8.2, 9.3, and 10.5, respectively. On the other hand, the particle size distribution changed broader with increase in pH. These differences were attributable to the different NH3·H2O function. NH3·H2O was mainly used as a base at lower pH (〈9.0), while its complex function predominated at higher one (〉9.5). From thermodynamic viewpoint, the rate-limiting steps were dissolution of Al(OH)3 and γ-AlO(OH) to Al(OH)4− at lower and higher pH, respectively. The newly formed γ-AlO(OH) with high reactivity was the critical factor in the synthesis of bimodal particles. Higher temperature treatment of γ-AlO(OH) could decrease the reactivity, and could be used as an aluminum source for synthesis uniform ZnAl2O4 particles.

Notes: Well-crystallized cerium(IV) oxide (CeO2) powders with nanosizes without agglomeration have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method in an acidic medium by using cerium hydroxide gel as a precursor. The relationship between the grain size, the morphology of the CeO2 crystallites, and the reaction conditions such as temperature, time, and acidity of the medium was studied. The experiments showed that with increasing reaction temperature and time, the CeO2 crystallites grew larger. The crystallites synthesized in an acidic hydrothermal medium were larger and had a more regular morphology than the ones synthesized in a neutral or alkaline medium when the reaction temperature and time were fixed. The CeO2 crystallites synthesized in an acidic medium were monodispersed; however, there was vigorous agglomeration among the grains synthesized in a neutral or alkaline medium. It was demonstrated that the hydrothermal treatment was an Ostwald ripening process and the acidity (pH) of the used hydrothermal medium played a key role in the dissolution of smaller grains. It is proposed that the dissolution process can control the kinetics of the growth of larger grains.

Notes: ZnAl2O4-seeded CoAl2O4, with a core-shell structure, has been prepared under hydrothermal conditions when the Co2+ salt solution is substituted by 10% Zn2+ as a precursor. The ZnAl2O4 seed is generated during the synthesis process. The seeding process can decrease the synthesis temperature from 245° to 230°C and the particle size from 67 to 20 nm. The process can economize the consumption of Co2+ and control the particle size effectively.

Notes: The asymmetric unit of the crystal structure of C34H28N4O4.C4H8O2, which is a 1:1 inclusion complex, consists of half a molecule of the title compound t-DPC and half a molecule of 1,4-dioxane. The structure shows that t-DPC is centrosymmetric; its cyclobutane ring has an exactly planar conformation, and is nearly square. The four C—C single bonds are of equal length [1.569 (4) Å] and the bond angles are 91.6 (2) and 88.4 (2)°. The major photodimerization process is a head-to-tail reaction rather than a head-to-head one.

Notes: The contact force during impact of a NiTi alloy was studied in this paper. The contact force and contact time during impact between a spherical impactor and the specimen at different impact velocity and temperature were measured in real time. The maximum contact force and contact time of the NiTi alloy in the martensite state increased and decreased respectively with increasing temperature. The maximum contact force of the NiTi alloy in the parent phase state showed a plateau with increasing impact velocity of the impactor
