Notes: Oriented melt-spun ribbons with composition Sm1+Y(Co1−XCux)5 (X=0–0.3 and Y=0–0.2) were fabricated with a wheel speed of 5 m/s, followed by annealing in the temperature range of 600–1000 °C for 30 min. Our results show that a high degree of texture, in which the c axis is parallel to the longitudinal direction of the ribbons, is obtained in all above ribbons. The room temperature intrinsic coercivity can be significantly enhanced by both Sm additions and Cu substitution and coercivities of 21 and 12.4 kOe an achieved in Sm1.15Co5 and Sm(Co0.8Cu0.2)5 ribbons, respectively. Compared with the Sm-doped ribbons, Cu-doped ribbons exhibit a better thermal stability of coercivity and a high intrinsic coercivity of 5.2 kOe can be maintained at 300 °C in Sm(Co0.8Cu0.2)5 ribbons. Further analysis indicates that the coercivities of Sm- and Cu-doped ribbons are determined by different demagnetization mechanisms. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The effective interatomic potentials between distinct atoms in intermetallics, such as FeAl, Fe3Al, NiAl, Ni3Al, FeCr, Al3Cr, AlLi, Al3Li, and AlLi3, are obtained by inversion of first-principles cohesive energy curves based on the lattice inversion method of Chen. The obtained potentials are used to evaluate the phonon dispersions and linear thermal expansion of some intermetallic compounds, as well as the site preference of alloying element Cr in the D03-ordered Fe3Al. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel ring heat source probe based on three-dimensional transient heat conduction from a point heat source is applied to measure in situ wall-rock thermal conductivity in mine pits. The calibration is based on two reference materials. The data are processed digitally, using an acoustically controlled channel selector. The application of a fully automatic control technique by a microcomputer program results in successful establishment of a quick and portable one-button triggering, in situ wall-rock thermal conductivity meter for mine pits.

Notes: Abstract: Machine learning can extract desired knowledge from training examples and ease the development bottleneck in building expert systems. Most learning approaches derive rules from complete and incomplete data sets. If attribute values are known as possibility distributions on the domain of the attributes, the system is called an incomplete fuzzy information system. Learning from incomplete fuzzy data sets is usually more difficult than learning from complete data sets and incomplete data sets. In this paper, we deal with the problem of producing a set of certain and possible rules from incomplete fuzzy data sets based on rough sets. The notions of lower and upper generalized fuzzy rough approximations are introduced. By using the fuzzy rough upper approximation operator, we transform each fuzzy subset of the domain of every attribute in an incomplete fuzzy information system into a fuzzy subset of the universe, from which fuzzy similarity neighbourhoods of objects in the system are derived. The fuzzy lower and upper approximations for any subset of the universe are then calculated and the knowledge hidden in the information system is unravelled and expressed in the form of decision rules.

Notes: Abstract: The theory of rough sets is an extension of set theory for studying intelligent systems characterized by insufficient and incomplete information. We discuss the basic concept and properties of knowledge reduction based on inclusion degree and evidence reasoning theory, and propose a knowledge discovery approach based on inclusion degree and evidence reasoning theory.

Notes: The probability reasoning method, fuzzy reasoning method, evidential reasoning method and other reasoning methods are main techniques employed in intelligent systems for processing uncertain and vague information. The concept of inclusion degree was proposed earlier and it has been proved that the methods mentioned above are examples of inclusion degrees. In this paper, we introduce type S1 and type S2 inclusion degrees, discuss the relationship between them, and further propose inclusion degrees on interval numbers, divisions, vectors and set vectors. This paper addresses an uncertainty analysis method with different inclusion degrees for intelligent systems and other systems such as fuzzy relational databases.

Notes: Magnetically anisotropic Sm1−xGdxCo5 (x=0, 0.2, 0.5) ribbons are produced by conventional melt spinning. The coercivity Hc increases from 5 kOe for x=0 to 11 kOe for x=0.5. Microstructure analyses show that this abnormal change of the coercivity is ascribed to the decrease of the quantity of the 2:7 phase, which serves as a center for a reverse domain. The remanence ratio also increases from 0.80 for x=0 to 0.95 for x=0.5. An energy product of 16 MGOe at room temperature for the Sm0.8Gd0.2Co5 ribbons has been achieved without the need of a complex heat treatment. The temperature characteristic of remanence is substantially improved due to the change of the microstructure arising from Gd substitution. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The A2 gene family is present in Leishmania donovani, which causes fatal visceral leishmaniasis in human patients, but is not present in Leishmania major, which causes cutaneous leishmaniasis infections. The A2 genes in L. donovani are stage specific and are expressed at high levels in the amastigote stage in the mammalian host, but are not expressed in the promastigote stage in the insect sandfly vector. The A2 genes are tandem repeated with a distinct gene family termed the A2rel genes. In order to characterize the structure and function of the A2–A2rel gene clusters, the 5′ and 3′ DNA sequences flanking the A2–A2rel cluster were isolated, sequenced and used to generate mutants through gene targeting. Although it was possible to generate partial A2–A2rel gene clusters knock-out mutants, it was not possible to delete all the A2–A2rel gene clusters completely from the L. donovani genome, suggesting that, within this cluster, there are genes that are essential for survival in culture. Characterization of these mutants revealed that A2 and A2rel gene expression was compensated by amplifying the remaining intact A2 and A2rel genes, and the proliferation of these mutants in culture and their virulence in BALB/c mice were compromised. In order to explore further the biological role of A2, the L. donovani A2 gene was introduced into L. major. In comparison with the control L. major, the A2-expressing L. major parasites demonstrated an increased ability to survive in the spleen of BALB/c mice. These data suggest that A2 plays a role in the visceralization of infection associated with L. donovani.
