Notes: This paper focuses on understanding the influence of ma-terial properties on the complicated ferroelectric (FE) emis-sion process. Three different compositions in the lead lan-thanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) system were chosen for study, based on their widely different dielectric and ferro-electric properties: antiferroelectric (AFE) 2/95/5, “nor-mal” ferroelectric 8/65/35, and nonferroelectric 15/65/35. Repeatable emission was obtained from the 2/95/5 compo-sition, which could also be modulated at high frequency (200 kHz). The fast AFE ⇆ FE phase transition is respon-sible for the FE emission properties of this material, which is supported by the relationship between the switching cur-rent and the emission current. Comparatively, FE emission from the 8/65/35 composition degraded rapidly, which was attributed to decreases in the remanent polarization. No emission signal was detected from the 15/65/35 composi-tion, because no switching activity occurs, which can be interpreted as additional evidence that electron emission from the previously mentioned two compositions was in-deed a FE emission process.

Notes: A mixed type electron emission, i.e., simultaneous ferroelectric and plasma emission, was observed with a negative driving pulse applied to doped Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 ceramics in the absence of any external potential on the electron collector. During these emission studies, significant microstructural changes on the emission surface were observed, and corresponded to the different emission modes. Erosion craters at the edge of the electrode and small particles near these craters reflected the formation of a dense plasma there. Comparatively, cavities, i.e., grain pullouts, accumulated on the bare ferroelectric surface, the frequency of which depended upon its distance from the grid. This phenomenon is proposed to be a result of fringing fields and the associated strain energy due to 90° domain switching, which could be seen as an evidence that ferroelectric emission occurred in these areas. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Simultaneous ferroelectric and plasma emission from Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 was observed with only a negative driving pulse applied to the sample, and without an extraction potential on the electron collector. Plasma emission was a strong, inconsistent, and self-destructive process. In addition, a positive ion current was detected. Comparatively, ferroelectric emission was a relatively stable self-emission process, exhibiting no apparent delay time, and no positive ion current. The relationship between the switching and emission current of ferroelectric samples measured simultaneously cannot only be used to determine the existence of ferroelectric emission, but can also give direction to choosing suitable ferroelectric materials for emitter applications. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Understanding the mechanism of electron emission from ferroelectrics is in deed crucial for the application of ferroelectric cathodes. We appreciated the comments of Dorfman et al. on our recent article [J. Appl. Phys. 85, 6055 (1998)]. We believe the original proposed model is consistent and reasonable, i.e., the coexistence of ferroelectric and plasma emission from the same sample. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Cordyceps sinensis is one of the most valuable medicinal fungi in the Orient. It is naturally distributed in the eastern extension area of the Qinghai–Tibet plateau, at an altitude over 4000 m high. In order to investigate genetic variation and evolutionary relationships of C. sinensis from different geographical regions, 17 isolates of C. sinensis were collected from different provinces and the complete sequences of rDNA ITS were determined. On the basis of 5.8S rDNA and ITS region analysis, it was clearly shown that the ITS sequences within C. sinensis are highly homologous regardless of geographical origin. The distance values between the sequences in this study were lower than 0.03. This implied that C. sinensis from different geographic regions are the same species; they are not different species or a species complex. The results also showed that distance values between C. sinensis and Hirsutella sinensis are of the same order as those within C. sinensis from different geographic regions. This confirmed our previous results that C. sinensis should only have H. sinensis as its asexual stage whatever the geographic region from which the samples were collected. An rDNA ITS clone library was established to obtain further evidence for the interpretation of the fungal community structure from C. sinensis and to confirm the accuracy of the taxonomic identities produced by directly sequencing the rDNA ITS region. The discrimination between intraspecies of C. sinensis might provide additional data for the authentication of medicinal material at the species or intraspecies level.

Notes: Abstract Purpose. To develop a liposome-based system for systemic delivery of anti-inflammatory drugs to airways and other inflamed tissues. Methods. Postcapillary venular gap junctions open during airway inflammation and allow fluid accumulation and permit molecules (e.g. complement, kininogen) to enter tissues, initiating inflammatory cascades. Beta-adrenergic agonists prevent inflammatory plasma extravasation, but because of their deleterious side effects, they are not used intravenously. When sterically stabilized "stealth” liposomes are injected iv, they remain in the circulation for long periods. Inflammatory mediators [e.g., substance P(SP)] open postcapillary venular gaps and allow liposomes and their contents to be deposited selectively in the inflamed tissue. Results. We hypothesized that liposomes encapsulating a beta-adrenergic agonist, such as albuterol, would deposit selectively in inflamed airway tissue, where the drug would slowly leak out of the liposomes, resulting in closure of the gaps, thus preventing subsequent inflammatory extravasation. To test this hypothesis, we delivered albuterol-loaded liposomes iv in rats. Then we injected SP to open the venular gaps and allow accumulation of the drug-loaded liposomes in airway tissue. We examined whether this treatment resulted in inhibition of subsequent plasma extravasation induced by SP. The results indicate that liposome-encapsulated albuterol inhibits subsequent extravasation, presumably by leaking out of liposomes in airway tissue. This inhibition occurs for prolonged periods of time and with limited side effects compared to the effect of free albuterol. Conclusions. We conclude that liposomes loaded with appropriate drugs, by migrating to inflamed tissue and subsequently inhibiting inflammatory cascades, may be of therapeutic value in inflammatory diseases.

Description: The (k,n)-threshold Secret Image Sharing scheme (SISS) is a solution to image protection. However, the shadow images generated by traditional SISS are noise-like, easily arousing deep suspicions, so that it is significant to generate meaningful shadow images. One solution is to embed the shadow images into meaningful natural images and visual quality should be considered first. Limited by embedding rate, the existing schemes have made concessions in size and visual quality of shadow images, and few of them take the ability of anti-steganalysis into consideration. In this paper, a meaningful SISS that is based on Natural Steganography (MSISS-NS) is proposed. The secret image is firstly divided into n small-sized shadow images with Chinese Reminder Theorem, which are then embedded into RAW images to simulate the images with higher ISO parameters with NS. In MSISS-NS, the visual quality of shadow images is improved significantly. Additionally, as the payload of cover images with NS is larger than the size of small-sized shadow images, the scheme performs well not only in visual camouflage, but also in other aspects, like lossless recovery, no pixel expansion, and resisting steganalysis.
