Beschreibung: In this letter, we present a fully complementary-metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) compatible microelectromechanical system thermopile infrared (IR) detector employing vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNT) as an advanced nano-engineered radiation absorbing material. The detector was fabricated using a commercial silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process with tungsten metallization, comprising a silicon thermopile and a tungsten resistive micro-heater, both embedded within a dielectric membrane formed by a deep-reactive ion etch following CMOS processing. In-situ CNT growth on the device was achieved by direct thermal chemical vapour deposition using the integrated micro-heater as a micro-reactor. The growth of the CNT absorption layer was verified through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The functional effects of the nanostructured ad-layer were assessed by comparing CNT-coated thermopiles to uncoated thermopiles. Fourier transform IR spectroscopy showed that the radiation absorbing properties of the CNT adlayer significantly enhanced the absorptivity, compared with the uncoated thermopile, across the IR spectrum (3  μ m–15.5  μ m). This led to a four-fold amplification of the detected infrared signal (4.26  μ m) in a CO 2 non-dispersive-IR gas sensor system. The presence of the CNT layer was shown not to degrade the robustness of the uncoated devices, whilst the 50% modulation depth of the detector was only marginally reduced by 1.5 Hz. Moreover, we find that the 50% normalized absorption angular profile is subsequently more collimated by 8°. Our results demonstrate the viability of a CNT-based SOI CMOS IR sensor for low cost air quality monitoring.

Beschreibung: The obliquely propagating arbitrary amplitude electrostatic wave is studied in a dense magnetized plasma having singly and doubly charged helium ions with nonrelativistic and ultrarelativistic degenerate electrons pressures. The Fermi temperature for ultrarelativistic degenerate electrons described by N. M. Vernet [(Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2007), p. 57] is used to define ion acoustic speed in ultra-dense plasmas. The pseudo-potential approach is used to solve the fully nonlinear set of dynamic equations for obliquely propagating electrostatic waves in a dense magnetized plasma containing helium ions. The upper and lower Mach number ranges for the existence of electrostatic solitons are found which depends on the obliqueness of the wave propagation with respect to applied magnetic field and charge number of the helium ions. It is found that only compressive (hump) soliton structures are formed in all the cases and only subsonic solitons are formed for a singly charged helium ions plasma case with nonrelativistic degenerate electrons. Both subsonic and supersonic soliton hump structures are formed for doubly charged helium ions with nonrelativistic degenerate electrons and ultrarelativistic degenerate electrons plasma case containing singly as well as doubly charged helium ions. The effect of propagation direction on the soliton amplitude and width of the electrostatic waves is also presented. The numerical plots are also shown for illustration using dense plasma parameters of a compact star (white dwarf) from literature.

Beschreibung: RNA editing usually affects only a fraction of expressed transcripts and there is a vast amount of variation in editing levels of ADAR (adenosine deaminase, RNA-specific) targets. Here we explore natural genetic variation affecting editing levels of particular sites in 81 natural strains of Drosophila melanogaster . The analysis of associations between editing levels and single-nucleotide polymorphisms allows us to map putative cis -regulatory regions affecting editing of 16 A-to-I editing sites ( cis -RNA editing quantitative trait loci or cis -edQTLs, P  〈 10 –8 ). The observed changes in editing levels are validated by independent molecular technique. All identified regulatory variants are located in close proximity of modulated editing sites. Moreover, colocalized editing sites are often regulated by same loci. Similar to expression and splicing QTL studies, the characterization of edQTLs will greatly expand our understanding of cis -regulatory evolution of gene expression.

Beschreibung: Due to the functional dependency of micro-systems technologies on stringent dimensions, masses and tolerances, strict quality requirement is paramount for mass producing micro-parts for use in micro-devices. The consistency of components produced could vary as a result of significant effects of process parameters or process noise, thereby necessitating the urge for experimental studies to determine the best process combination that will produce a variant free component that will meet the dimension, mass and other parameters requirement of its application use. In this paper, the influence of some process parameters on replication of micro-feature is explored. Parts with micro-feature designed are moulded using polyethylene and polypropylene. Design of experiment (DoE) approach was applied to correlate the fabricated parts quality to the processing parameters. Two level, half factorial 8-run (2 4-1 ) experimental plan was used to investigate the effect of four process par...

Beschreibung: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. We previously mapped a locus for a rare familial form of PD to chromosome 1p36 (PARK6). Here we show that mutations in PINK1 (PTEN-induced kinase 1) are associated with PARK6. We have identified two homozygous mutations affecting the PINK1 kinase domain in three consanguineous PARK6 families: a truncating nonsense mutation and a missense mutation at a highly conserved amino acid. Cell culture studies suggest that PINK1 is mitochondrially located and may exert a protective effect on the cell that is abrogated by the mutations, resulting in increased susceptibility to cellular stress. These data provide a direct molecular link between mitochondria and the pathogenesis of PD.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Valente, Enza Maria -- Abou-Sleiman, Patrick M -- Caputo, Viviana -- Muqit, Miratul M K -- Harvey, Kirsten -- Gispert, Suzana -- Ali, Zeeshan -- Del Turco, Domenico -- Bentivoglio, Anna Rita -- Healy, Daniel G -- Albanese, Alberto -- Nussbaum, Robert -- Gonzalez-Maldonado, Rafael -- Deller, Thomas -- Salvi, Sergio -- Cortelli, Pietro -- Gilks, William P -- Latchman, David S -- Harvey, Robert J -- Dallapiccola, Bruno -- Auburger, Georg -- Wood, Nicholas W -- G-4029/Parkinson's UK/United Kingdom -- GGP02089/Telethon/Italy -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2004 May 21;304(5674):1158-60. Beschreibung: Research has shown that mobile learning enables its users to learn at any time and place. The current study investigates the use of VocBlast; an app that integrates technical and engineering vocabulary, in terms of understanding the behavioural intention of its players. The study employs 129 engineering and technical students from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP). Online survey was used to collect their opinions; in particular male and female students’ opinions on the use of the app in the future. The results of the study indicated that there was no significant difference pertaining to their behavioural intention using VocBlast in the course of time. The study implies that more time needs to be given to the students in playing VocBlast as it is believed that playing the game repetitively would promote positive perceptions among its players.
