    Notes: A laboratory thermal processing unit and reactor cell were adapted to aseptically process browned and unbrowned cubes from Choice an Utility Grade beef. Processing parameters of heating medium flow rate, time and temperature were established. Processed product was analyzed for changes in flavor and texture on day 0 and after 30 days refrigerated storage. Because sterility of each sample was not verified, sensory evaluation was only performed at day 0. Pre-browning improved flavor quality and did not reduce tenderness or yield. Low quality beef could be effectively utilized with proper processing parameters. Lipid oxidation and loss of sulfur compounds during storage were limiting factors in aseptically processing beef particulates.

    Notes: Neutral lipid (NL) and phospholipid (PL) fractions and their corresponding fatty acid (FA) profiles from the L. dorsi of Angus-Hereford heifers (n=27) were compared as a function of forage grazing (FG) and time in the feedlot after grazing (DIF) on pasture. There were no differences in total PL content or FA composition of the individual PL as influenced by initial FG. As DIF increased, there was an increase in PL concentration and significant changes in the FA composition of the total PL and several of the individual PL fractions, separated by high performance liquid chromatography. Total PL content and FA content of the individual PL were significantly correlated with differences in the flavor characteristics of ground beef which were determined by a descriptive panel.

    Notes: Neutral lipid (NL) and phospholipid (PL) fractions and their corresponding fatty acid profiles from the L. dorsi of Bison, Hereford, and Brahman steers of similar age finished on identical diets were determined. Compositional differences were related to sensory characteristics of the samples. Phosphatidylcholine + lysophosphatidylethanolamine (PC + LPE) existed in the highest concentration in all samples evaluated followed by lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), sphingomyelin (SPH), fraction one and phosphatidylserine (PS). Bison contained more total PL, particularly PC + LPE and LPC, than the other two bovine species. Polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition of these PL was greater for Bison. Off-flavor and aftertaste increased with increasing levels of PC + LPE and LPC due to their greater composition of PUFA.

    Notes: Summary The study of interstellar molecules broadly includes two areas of interest. One area uses the unique ability of molecules to act as probes of the physical conditions in the cold, dense, visually opaque component of the interstellar medium. The physical properties of this and other components of the interstellar medium are summarized. The other area deals with the chemistry of interstellar molecules, recent aspects of which are emphasized in this review. Gas-phase chemistry, shock chemistry, and grain surface chemistry are discussed in the context of recent observations. No present observations suggest that surface reactions are relevant, but neither can they be ruled out. Ion-molecule reactions are clearly operative, at least for the simpler species. Chemical isotope fractionation is reviewed, andd it is concluded that the complexities of the chemistry allow no cosmological conclusions to be drawn from observations of deuterium in interstellar molecules, while the presence of13C in interstellar molecules permits an estimate of the12C/13C ratio which is consistent with the current concepts of the nucleosynthesis history of the Galaxy. Possible connections between interstellar molecules and the early molecular history of the solar system are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The list of detected refractory-element (RE) species in IRC10216 is now large enough to try to assess their chemistry, and the fraction of each that escapes in gas phase to the ISM. The former may tell us how grains are formed, the latter whether mass-loss from evolved stars is important in determining interstellar elemental depletions as distinct from accretion processes in the ISM. We expect that much of the Si chemistry is now understood and about 25% of Si escapes as a gas. Other REs are less well understood but most should be more volatile than Si. For many of the REs, O-rich CSEs should behave similarly to C-rich ones.

    Notes: Abstract Models of the four currently recognized regimes of astrochemistry are compared with observations. Ion-Molecule Gas Phase Chemistry is fundamental throughout all interstellar and circumstellar molecular clouds, and by itself explains fairly well the simpler molecular species in diffuse and cold quiescent dense interstellar clouds, as well as in the outer envelopes of circumstellar clouds. Dust-Grain Chemistry may modify ion-molecule chemistry noticeably in regions containing UV radiation, shocks, or other heating agents which can serve to promote surface reactions and to desorb molecules frozen on grains; it likely plays no role in cold quiescent clouds except to adsorb gas phase molecules. Shock Chemistry occurs in regions of star formation and appears important in explaining certain molecular species and in disrupting grains. Circumstellar envelopes combine several chemistries, including those of thermochemical equilibrium in the dense inner regions, and ion-molecule in the outer regions, with grain processes also likely. The limitations of all current models are lack of knowledge of reaction rates, of detailed physical conditions (interstellar clouds), and of the relative depletions (onto grains) of the chemical elements, as well as grain surface chemistry in general. In both interstellar and circumstellar objects, ion-molecule gas phase models are now quite successful in explaining, semi-quantitatively, observed species with up to 4 atoms, but difficulties remain for larger species, as well as the state of carbon, and the models are not yet very predictive.

    Notes: Problems associated with the repair of fractured plastic car bumpers by traditional hot gas welding have been identified. In particular, interfacial cracks arising due to contraction stresses, weld pores, root notches, and voids in filler rods have been observed. These result in welds with inferior mechanical properties. Even so the impact properties and strength of plastic bumpers which were fractured and have been repaired by hot gas welding are likely to be acceptable for the purposes that the bumpers are intended. We have considered three materials: a polycarbonate/polyester blend, poly(butylene terephthalate), and an ethylene-propylene-diene rubber. Improvements in weld strength and interfacial bonding arise if a heated roller immediately following the welding torch is used to consolidate and compress the molten plastic. Porosity is reduced if the hot gas can escape easily from beneath the weld.
