Notizen: Hydrogen peroxide has been the only medicine used to treat salmon infected with sea lice [Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer)] on many farms in Scotland since 1992 and reports have suggested reduced treatment efficacy. The present study tests the sensitivity of sea lice to exposure to hydrogen peroxide under farm conditions and also in vivo by comparing lice from a farm with suspected resistance and lice from a farm that had not been pre-exposed to hydrogen peroxide. In bin treatments on fish from a farm treated with hydrogen peroxide on 41 occasions, numbers of ovigerous lice declined by only 15% and 16% in two replicates and other mobile stages by 25%. Where hydrogen peroxide had not been used, ovigerous females declined by 90% and 87% and other mobile lice stages by 97% and 99%. These trials and observed poor efficacy of cage treatments, for example only 7.5% reduction in lice numbers when fish were treated with 2000 p.p.m. for 20 mins, indicated resistance of lice to hydrogen peroxide. The mechanisms involved in the development of resistance, possible genetic selection for lice with reduced carapace permeability or detoxifying enzymes such as catalase, or tolerance through induction by subtherapeutic exposure are reviewed. Implications for lice control strategies relying on hydrogen peroxide are discussed.

Notizen: Histological changes in the perch ovary during development are described and related to changes in gonad weight and to a macroscopic scale of maturity stages after Kesteven (1960). A single organ formed by the fusion of two primordial ovaries, a central internal oviduct, and an extremely thick chorion surrounding oocytes are characteristic features of the perch ovary. Resting oocytes can be differentiated from developing oocytes which are larger and possess a granulosa layer which permits formation of the chorion and yolk acquisition. In the maturing ovary, oocyte diameter increases rapidly and the chorion, which possesses four layers, the tunica propria, two middle zones forming a fine network, and the zona radiata, also expands. The spent ovary is disorganized with follicles and tunica wall contracted, and a number of residual oocytes may be apparent. There was no evidence of pre-ovulatory degeneration although autolysis of a small number of residual oocytes was observed. The gonadosomatic index was highest for males in September and at a maximum in females immediately prior to spawning. After spawning the index fell rapidly with lowest values recorded in June and July. Variations in the gonadosomatic index are related to developmental stages in females.

Notizen: Wrasse were widely distributed in inshore waters of west Scotland in rocky and algal habitats. Ctenolabrus rupestris and Centrolabrus exoletus dominated commercial and experimental catches using creels, traps and fyke nets, but Crenilabrus melops, Labrus bergylta and L. mixtus were infrequent. Maximum age of sampled fish was 16yr in C. rupestris, 9 yr in C. exolefus, 5 yr in C. melops, 15 yr in L. bergylta, and 11 yr in L. mixtus. Growth was more rapid prior to maturation in all species. The von Bertalanffy growth model fitted data for C. rupestris and C. exoletus. Male C. rupestris and C. exoletus were significantly longer than females in most age groups and growth of all species captured in mid–Scottish areas was more rapid than in northern localities. Mortality (Z) of C. rupestris was 0–1861 per year and 0·4185 in C exoletus.

Notizen: Regurgitation of stomach contents in the predatory perch and pike captured in gill nets could be readily identified and occurrence measured. Stomachs following regurgitation, as opposed to true ‘empty’ stomachs, were large, distended, with a thin wall and little internal ridging. The mean percentage of genuinely empty stomachs over a 22-month period in perch was 20–21 % and in pike 7–10%. Regurgitation in perch was rare (〈9% stomachs), normally only partial and restricted to water temperatures 〉 21°C: gill netting is therefore a legitimate means of sampling perch in food studies. In pike the sum of partial and complete regurgitation was important, with mean annual values in two lakes of 48 and 50%, and up to 84% in summer samples; it was related to water temperature (x) and described by the significant relationship y= 20.63+x 2.84, but was unrelated to fish length and gill net mesh size. Food studies of predatory fishes using gill nets as a capture method should take account of regurgitation. Further information is required on the extent of regurgitation when other sampling methods are used.

Notizen: The prevalence, abundance and intensity of protistan and metazoan parasites were examined in the labrid fishes Ctenolabrus rupestris, Centrolabrus exoletus, Crenilabrus melops, Labrus bergylta and L. mixtus in west Scotland. The 22 parasite species identified do not appear to be a major threat to farmed Atlantic salmon. Few mortalities of wrasse stocked on salmon farms were due to resident parasites or to transfers from salmon.

Notizen: Histological changes in the ovaries of pike from two shallow, adjacent, Scottish lakes are described and related to a macroscopic scale of maturity stages and to changes in gonad weight. There was no evidence of pre-ovulatory degeneration although occasional residual oocytes were present in spent ovaries. The gonadosomatic index (GSI) was high in males from October to March, and in females it increased through the winter months to a maximum immediately prior to spawning. Maximum ovarian weight was 8.3–9.0% of total body weight compared with only 0.9–1.1% for testes. These GSIs were low compared with other reports for the British Isles, suggesting lower reproductive output. Spawning occurred in the first two weeks of April at a water temperature of 6.0–7.5° C. Fecundity was described from a regression of egg number (F) on fork length (f.l.): log10F= -1.51 + 3.33 log10 f.l. (cm). Mean egg diameter after preservation varied from 1.1 to 2.4 mm over the size range examined. Males were mature at age 2 at a length of ≥ 27 cm, while females first spawned at age 3 at a length of ≤ 28 cm, although a minority were mature at age 2. The sex ratio was 1.2 males: 1 female at Kinord and 1.4 : 1 at Davan. Greater egg production at Davan, 50 678 ha−1, compared with Kinord, 33 557 ha−1, was due to higher individual fecundity-at-age resulting from better growth.Fecundity (19.29 × 103 calculated for a pike of 55 cm F.L.), relative fecundity of only 10–24 eggs per gram wet weight of adult, and GSI values were low compared with pike in North America and Eurasia. Food supply may restrict reproductive output of pike in Lochs Kinord and Davan. The abundance ratio of predator: prey is high with the main prey species, perch, present in low numbers, and the only alternative species is eel in these simple fish communities.

Notizen: Mortality of 0+ Eurasian perch was measured directly from the decline in catch in a high-speed plankton sampler and described by a negative exponential model. A mean mortality of 0.063 day 1 (range=0.020–0.089) was calculated; for 0+ juveniles it was 0.021 day 1. Mean larval production was 0.85–1.30 mg dry weight m−2 day−1 in Loch Kinord and 0.08–0.12 in Loch Davan. Annual production of 0+ juveniles was 1.97–7.55 kg wet weight ha −1 at L. Kinord and 1.01 kg at L. Davan. The contribution of 0+ perch, including the egg stages, to total perch production was 88–96%. Availability of food items on transition to exogenous feeding and through the larval period did not limit survival. Cannibalism by adults accounted for most of larval mortality, and predation by pike and adult perch were responsible for the majority of juvenile losses. The population structure of adult perch, for 12 year classes, was stable at L. Kinord, while year classes at L. Davan exhibited fluctuations in abundance and in two sampling years were eliminated in the first summer. Survival in the eleutheroembryonic phase was variable at L. Davan and observed to be low compared with L. Kinord. It is suggested that this was a result of water turbulence on the exposed and shallow spawning areas at L. Davan.
