Notes: Abstract A mesoscale model has been applied to calculate climatological means of the surface wind. A reliable average requires more than 40 model runs, which are differentiated by the direction and speed of the geostrophic wind under the assumption of neutral stratification. The frequency distributions of the geostrophic wind have been taken from observations of the 850-hPa winds at the radiosonde station in Prague for a 10-year period. The simulation results have been averaged over all sectors and speed classes of the geostrophic wind according to their frequencies. A comparison of the calculated mean wind speeds with observed ones shows deviations of about 0.4 ms−1 outside the mountains. The representation of steep topography and isolated mountains on the basis of a 3-km horizontal resolution of the simulations needs special treatment in order to reduce the gap of up to 4 ms−1 between observed and simulated mean wind speeds over mountains. Therefore, an empiric speed-up formula has been applied to the isolated mountains that otherwise would fall through the 3-km meshes. The corresponding deviations have been reduced to 1.5 ms−1.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary By means of the thermal conduction equation the errors of the soil heat flux are investigated. The thermal conductivity λ of the soil is calculated only by the aid of the soil temperatures. If the temperatures are given with an accuracy of 0,1 K large errors in the soil heat flux are found, especially when using the heat flux equation. With the augmentation of temperature-accuracy to 0,01 K the errors become less then 10%.

Notes: Summary The Squall Lines are the most important convective systems of the West African Sahel region yielding precipitation during the summer months mainly from June to September. The composite method is used to show the average structure of the continental Squall Lines observed during the WA-MEX period July 1979. Composite fields of flow and moisture are produced of the areas within the Squall Lines as well as of their environment to show the coupling between both the Squall Lines and the larger scales features such as the African Easterly Jet, the Easterly Waves and the Monsoon Front. The Squall Lines are preferably situated west of the Easterly Wave trough whereas the area east of the trough mostly is Squall Line free. Here the northward directed water vapour flux into the Sahel region is enhanced. Furthermore, north-ward moisture transport occurs north of the Squall Lines. The water vapour of both fluxes from the south as well as the water vapours available from intensive local evaporation in the Squall Line free space are then incorporated in the subsequent Squall Lines and thus provide the Sahel région with the essential rains.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Oberflächenausdehnung des Tschadsees wird als ein Ergebnis von Klimaparametern im Tschadbecken betrachtet.
Notes: Summary The surface area of the closed Lake Chad is regarded as a product of the climatic parameters in the Chad Basin. With the aid of a simple analytical model using the energy and the water balance the sensitivity of the water volume of the lake with respect to meteorological and hydrological parameters was investigated. A data set is derived describing the climatic conditions in the Chad Basin during the period of the maximum of the northhemispheric glaciation at about 18,000 yr BP. In particular a reduced hydrological input into the lake was assumed as well as higher insolation and wind speed while the air temperature and the atmospheric moisture content were reduced. The resulting surface area of Lake Chad is then diminished by 80% and calculated to be less than 4000 km2.

Notes: Summary Composites of synoptic reports and wind observations in a coordinate system moving with the squall lines over the WAMEX area in June 1979 allow us to show the average structure of the airflow, the moisture and temperature fields in the synoptic scale environment of West African continental squall lines. The monsoon front, the African Easterly Jet, the easterly waves, and the squall lines interact and produce the observed air flow patterns. The results of the composite enalysis reveal a northward surge of the monsoonal air masses in the rear of the squall lines thus providing favorable conditions for the generation of new squall lines.

Notes: Abstract This is one of a series of papers on the Askervein Hill Project. It presents results from the Askervein 1982 and 1983 experiments in the form of vertical profiles of mean wind and turbulence integral statistics at upwind reference locations and at two hilltop sites. The data were obtained from a variety of sensors including sonic, Gill UVW and cup anemometers mounted on 50, 30, 17 and 10 m towers and TALA kite systems. Comparisons with numerical-model predictions are discussed.
