Notes: Abstract  The origin of dolomite and its diagenesis are still not fully understood. The timing and occurrence of dolomite beds remain key problems. Many thin-bed layers of dolomite in marine sediments were discovered at drill sites in the forearc basin west of the Japan Trench during the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186. The thickness of the dolomite layers ranges from 0.5 to 2 m, estimated from the well log. These thin-bed dolomite layers were able to be identified on seismic data, through quantitative analysis and comparison of the data with synthetic seismograms. Amplitude-preserved seismic data processing with broadband high-resolution enhancement helps to estimate the reflectivity series dominated by the large impedance contrast between the dolomite layers and the host sediments. In this report, the first geophysical evidence of large-scale dolomitization is provided. The occurrence of thin dolomitic layers embedded in diatomaceous sediments is on a basin scale rather than being an isolated event, which constrains the type of dolomitization and the timing of layered dolomitization. It was found that thin-bed dolomite layers occur where there is an abrupt change in sedimentation rate. Layered dolomitization starts when sedimentation rate changes (from high to low or vice versa). Two dolomite layers coincide with the Miocene–Pliocene and Pliocene–Pleistocene age boundaries. Formation of dolomite beds could be a timing signal of a dramatic change in paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic environments.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Field observations, sound and video recordings of the rare endemic Chinese Grouse were carried out during May 2 and 10, 1997, the optimal time to study display, in the Lianhuashan reserve (Gansu province) at altitudes between 2800 and 3200 m a.s.l. We found the density in spring extraordinarily high: 15 occupied territories/km2 in the best studied plot. 18 colour-banded and radio-tagged birds were recorded. We were able to record on tape most of the vocal and instrumental sounds produced by the displaying grouse. Chinese grouse males perform a wing-beat display. The main elements of the territorial activity were variable flutter-jumps on the ground up to 1 m high and 2–4 m wide, sometimes also from a tree to the ground and vice-versa, producing instrumental sounds. An evident peak of flutter jumping activity was observed just after the birds left the roost tree in the morning (5.30 h local time) up to 8 o'clock. Noisy territorial flights in the crowns of trees were rarely observed. The low frequency sounds produced by the wings of the jumping cocks produced a typical impressive morning concert, especially, if 3–4 conflicting males came close together. First copulation was recorded on May 9. In the mating time, flutter jumping activity abated considerably.

Notes: Abstract Based on examination of 38 specimens of the Chinese Grouse, and age determination methodes described for the Hazel Grouse, we suggest a potential age determination technique for the northern subspecies of the Chinese Grouse (B. s. sewerzowi). Adults appear to have a distinct boundary on the tip of P1 and juveniles a diffuse boundary. Adults may dominate in the group with 〉6 dark bars on P9. This technique does not seem to be applicable to the southern subspecies (B. s. secunda). We encourage further testing of this potential method.

Notes: TiB2-Cu matrix composites from titanium, boron and copper powders were in-situfabricated by exothermic reaction. The effect of the applied pressure on the mechanical properties of the composite was investigated. The results showed that when the applied pressure increasing, the relative density, bending strength, fracture toughness and hardness of the composites were on the increase due to the formation of fine microstructure and the improvement of densification with thepressure increasing. The high pressure is beneficial to the better mechanical properties

Notes: A simple and cheap method has been applied to synthesize single-crystal uniform ZnO tubes withhigh yield in a hydrothermal process using Zn(NO3)2⋅6H2O and methenamine as reaction precursorsat low temperature. The products are characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM and SAED. ZnO tubes areuniform single-crystal structures and grow along the [0001] direction. They have straight andregular hexagonal configuration with faceted ends and slippery side surfaces. The growthmechanism of ZnO tubes is investigated and the processing conditions are critical for the formationof ZnO tubes

Notes: Highly ordered single-crystal iron nanowire arrays with different diameters have beenfabricated in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates by DC electrodeposition method. TheScanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) show that theiron nanowires are highly uniform and exhibit a single crystal structure. The X-ray diffraction(XRD) patterns of iron nanowire arrays indicate that most of the iron nanowire arrays have theobvious preferred orientation along the [200] direction. From the hysteresis loops of the ironnanowires, it reveals that the easy magnetization axes of nanowire arrays are along the long axis. The sample with smaller diameter (d=35nm) has a high square ratio (up to 98%) and a highcoercive filed (1265Oe) when the external magnetic field is applied along axis of the nanowires. When the diameter decreases, the square ratio and the coercive field increase due to thesingle-domain structure and the strong shape anisotropy in the smaller diameter nanowire arrays

Notes: To determine the optimal doping concentration, a series of Mn:MgAl2O4 were successfullyprepared through vacuum-sintering with the highest doping concentration up to 35%. Samples with a lowdoping concentration exhibit a light green color. When the doping concentration increases, its colorbecomes deeper and deeper and when the doping concentration reaches 14%, their colors become brownand deeper brown when their concentrations further increase. The crystal phases of the samples weremanifested by XRD measurements and their photoluminescence properties were studied. Combined withphase analysis, optimal doping concentration of transparent ceramics has been determined. In addition, the mechanism for fluorescence of Mn:MgAl2O4 transparent ceramics has also been discussed

Notes: In order to control surface microscopic quality of sheet metal after laser peen forming(LPF), visual numerical analyses for SUS304 plate was employed. Based on the FEM codeABAQUS/CAE, a conversion model of laser shock wave loading was established. The trackscontrolling technology of LPF was solved by functional element programs. The micro-plastic flowprocess of surface material was analyzed, and the change of residual stress distribution as well asmicro-topography in real time can be shown with the movement of pulsed laser beam. On the basis ofFEM simulation, LPF experiments were carried out. The micro-topography and section analysis wereanalyzed by AFM, surface residual stress was measured by X-ray diffraction method. It was foundthat after LPF, the surface irregularity was less than 0.15μm, the variation of average surfaceroughness was slight, both sides of deformed sheet existed useful residual compressive stress, and themaximum stress was -616.1MPa, meanwhile average surface micro-hardness in the peened zone washigher than the base’s surface. Simulative results show a good agreement with experimental results

Notes: The principle of laser peen forming (LPF) is introduced, the loading model of laser shockwave is established. This paper focuses on applying finite element analyses, instead of acomplicated experimental procedure, to predict the development, magnitude and distribution ofresidual stresses induced by laser impacts on a metal plate, and dynamic process of laser continuouspeen forming is realized with the FEM code ABAQUS. Based on the numerical analysis, the laserprocessing parameters can be optimized and the deformation contour of metal plate can be analyzed. The results calculated by the finite element method are correlated well with the availableexperimental results. The simulated results also reveal that adjusting the laser energy appropriatelycan result in an anticipated shape of plate in LPF process
