Abstract: The coalbed methane (CBM) reserve in China ranks third in the world with a total resource of 36.8×1012 m3. Exploitation of CBM has an important practical significance to ensure the long-term rapid development of China natural gas industry. Therefore, in 2002, the Ministry of Science and Technology of China set up a national 973 program to study CBM system and resolve problems of CBM exploration and exploitation in China. All the main research results and new insights from the program are presented in this book. The book is divided into 11 chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the present situation of CBM exploration and development in China and abroad. Chapters 2 through 9 illustrate the geological theory and prospect evaluation methods. Then chapters 10 and 11 discuss CBM recovery mechanisms and technology. The book systematically describes the origin, storage, accumulation and emission of CBM in China, and also proposes new methods and technologies on resource evaluation, prospect prediction, seismic interpretation and enhanced recovery. The book will appeal to geologists, lecturers and students who are involved in the CBM industry and connected with coal and conventional hydrocarbon resources research.

Notes: Transformation of plants by Agrobacterium tumefaciens is mediated by a set of virulence (vir) genes that are specifically induced by plant signal molecules through the VirA/VirG two-component regulatory system. The plant signal is transmitted from VirA to VirG by a cascade of phosphorylation reactions followed by the sequence-specific DNA binding of the VirG protein to the vir gene promoters which then activates their transcription. In this report, we describe a VirG mutant which is able to activate Wr gene expression independently of the VirA molecule and the two plant signal molecules, acetosyringone and monosaccharides. A strain of Agrobacterium containing this virG gene but lacking a functional virA gene was able to induce tumours on all three plants that were tested. A single amino acid change of asparagine (N) to aspartate (D) at position 54, adjacent to the site of VirG phosphorylation, aspartate 52, resulted in this constitutive phenotype. In vitro phosphorylation experiments showed that the mutant protein cannot be phosphorylated by VirA, suggesting that the negative charge resulting from the N to D switch mimics the phosphorylated conformation of the VirG molecule. The same amino acid change in the virG gene of the supervirulent strain A281 also resulted in a constitutive phenotype. However, the vir genes were not induced to high levels when compared with the levels of the constitutive Virg of strain A348.

Notes: Effects of the mold rotating speeds on the gradient microstructure and properties of heavy cross-sectional WCP/Fe-C composites made in a self-made centrifugal machine have been investigated with SEM, EDS etc. The results show the ring sample of WCP/Fe-C composites made in a centrifugal machine was free of any defects. And the transition layer between the working layer of WCP/Fe-C composites and matrix Fe-C alloy core was also perfect. The experimental results also show that the WCP-radius-directional distribution in the composites was a continuous component gradient one, which was changed with the various mold rotating speeds. At 1000 rpm the volume fractions of the WC particle from outer layer to inner layer were about 70 vol% to 50 vol% and, at 1400 rpm the volume fractions were about 80 vol% to 65 vol% respectively. The hardness and impacttoughness of the working layer of WCP/Fe-C composites were changed with increasing of the mold rotating speeds respectively. Finally, the mechanism of the effects of the mold rotating speeds was discussed in the paper

Notes: Two kinds of thick-walled rings, consisted of WCP/Fe-C gradient composites layers containingabout 54 and 70 vol.% of WCP and Fe-C alloy core, were cast by centrifugal casting method. The microstructure, mechanical properties and wear resistance of the gradient composites were investigated. Meanwhilethe results were compared with those made of the high speed steel. It was found that WCP in the twokind of gradient composites layers were even well distributed, WCP/Fe-C composites layer of 23-28mmwas obtained, the transition layer between the composites layer and matrix alloy core was perfect. Thetensile strengths of the two gradient composites layers achieved 345MPa, 460MPa and the impacttoughness were 4.6J/cm2, 6.2J/cm2 respectively. Moreover the hardness of the composites layers attainedHRA81 and HRA 78. The result of the comparison among the gradient composites layers and that made ofthe high speed steel showed that the wear resistance of the gradient composites layers containing about 50and 70 vol.% of WCP was more than 20 times higher than that of the high speed steel under loads of 100Nand 200N and sliding velocity of 60 m/s. Finally, the wear-mechanism was discussed

Notes: Abstract A theoretical study of the electronic structure and binding energy of some hypothetical Ti-X alloys was carried out using a first-principles discrete variational cluster method. The formation energy of an alloying atom in solution of titanium was estimated based on such calculations, and the case of multi-constituent practical Ti alloys was considered in the dilute limit by a linear superimposition approach. The influences of alloying additions on the bulk modulus of the alloys were evaluated from the variation of the formation energy. The calculated moduli of the Ti alloys were found to vary linearly with the experimental values. This indicates that the present approach is appropriate for the simulation of modulus of titanium alloys.

Notes: Abstract Previous studies have shown the pathogenic effects of grains cultivated in the endemic areas of Keshan disease and selenium is effective in the prevention of this disease. In this study, liver damages induced by feeding grains from an endemic area (endemic diet), and the effects of selenium and α-tocopherol supplement were examined. After 3 months on the endemic diet, the amounts of serum enzymes were significantly increased when compared to controls (animals receiving diet from a non-endemic area). Liver enzymes (alkaline phosphatase and choline esterase) were also found to be altered in the serum, further suggesting liver damages in animals on an endemic diet. Supplement of the endemic diet with selenium or α-tocopherol reversed the changes in serum enzymes. Increase in lipid peroxidation in the liver of animals on the endemic diet was observed when compared to that in control animals. Selenium and α-tocopherol supplements prevented the increase in lipid peroxidation in the liver by the endemic diet. Semi-quantitative histochemical analysis of glutamate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase in liver tissue showed that the livers of animals on an endemic diet were more sensitive to ischemic damagesin vitro. Supplementation of the endemic diet with either selenium or α-tocopherol reduced the sensitivity to ischemic damages. The results suggest that increased lipid peroxidation in the liver of rats on an endemic diet may be responsible for liver damages and elevation of serum enzymes. Restoration of glutathione peroxidase activity by selenium supplement or an increase in the content of α-tocopherol in the liver can prevent lipid peroxidation in animals on an endemic diet and thus provide the protective effects against liver damages.

Notes: Abstract Transphosphatidylation activity is a characteristic and remarkable property of phospholipase D (PLD) and has been studied in plants and mammalian tissues. This reaction is often used to confirm the properties and/or abnormalities of PLD activity. The mechanism for activating PLD transphosphatidylation seems multiple. Although significant changes of transphosphatidylation activity have been found in some pathological animal models, the biological significance of PLD transphosphatidylation remains largely unknown.
