    Description: Data collected during an ongoing study on incubation mounds and the social organization of the Nicobar megapode Megapodius nicobariensis Blyth, 1846, are reviewed. Microbial decomposition of organic matter in mounds is likely to be the major source of heat production within incubation mounds of the Nicobar megapode, though a direct relation between the rate of organic activity and the temperature could not be shown. The size of a mound was found to be the most important factor in the stabilization of incubation temperatures at optimal levels. Data on the social organization of the Nicobar megapode are presented. The use of mounds by multiple pairs, territorial behaviour, extrapair copulations and the break-up of pairs are highlighted. The mating system in the Nicobar megapode is briefly discussed.

    Notes: Understanding the nature of service failures and their impact on customer responses and designing cost-effective recovery strategies have been recognized as important issues by both service researchers and practitioners. We first propose a conceptual framework of service failure and recovery strategies. We then transform it into a mathematical model to assist managers in deciding on appropriate resource allocations for outcome and process recovery strategies based on customer risk profiles and the firm's cost structures. Based on this mathematical model we derive optimal recovery strategies, conduct sensitivity analyses of the optimal solutions for different model parameters, and illustrate them through numerical examples. We conclude with a discussion of managerial implications and directions for future research.

    Notes: The globalization of markets and businesses has meant that many companies now consider the world as a potential marketplace. In this changing environment, two crucial decisions taken by companies are time of entry (e.g. whether to enter early or late) and level of involvement (e.g. whether to adopt low involvement modes such as exports or high involvement modes such as sole venture). Although existing research has examined these issues and underscored the importance of these two decisions in isolated descriptive research, none has developed an integrated mathematical modeling framework for handling these two decisions simultaneously. To alleviate this important gap in the literature, develops a mathematical model for considering these decisions in a simultaneous framework. The results of the model are illustrated by means of numerical simulations. Managerial implications of the model and future research directions are delineated.

    Notes: Companies are increasingly bringing personnel together into teams from different countries, physically and/or electronically, to develop products for multiple or worldwide markets. Called global new product teams (GNPTs), these groups face significant challenges, including cultural diversity. Differing cultural values can lead to conflict, misunderstanding, and inefficient work styles on the one hand, and strong idea generation and creative problem solving on the other. A study was conducted to identify team compositions that would optimize the effects of national culture so that product development outcomes are favorable. This began by developing a theoretical framework describing the impact of national culture on product development tasks. The framework was then translated into several mathematical models using analytical derivations and comparative statics. The models identify the levels and variances of culture values that maximize product development success by simultaneously considering four relevant dimensions of GNPT performance. Next, the utility of these models was tested by means of numerical simulations for a range of team scenarios. Concludes by drawing implications of the findings for managers and researchers.

    Notes: This research has two major purposes: developing and testing a resource-based framework for entry mode choice and ascertaining the extent to which the determinants of foreign market entry mode choice in the manufacturing sector apply to foreign market entry mode choice in the non-separable service sector. Using mail survey data collected from top-level managers of US firms that had been engaged in international business, the article tests a number of research hypotheses concerning foreign market entry mode choice in the manufacturing and service sectors. The managerial and research implications of the findings are delineated and directions for future research are offered.

    Notes: Innovation management has been acknowledged as a crucial activity for the growth and survival of firms. An important element of a firm's innovation management strategy is the acquisition and management of patents. Although the role of patents has been widely discussed in the economics literature, only limited effort has been devoted toward examining the issue in the marketing context. To address this important gap in the literature, this article focuses on the factors governing the perceived value of patents and how such perceptions affect the firm's product development strategies. A conceptual model is developed and a number of research propositions based on existing research derived. The research has the potential to make a contribution to the academic literature, to offer insights for managers, and to provide guidelines for public policy makers.
