Notes: Abstract The point-source, spherical magnetogasdynamics shock wave moving into a constant density γ-law gas is considered in the limit of infinite shock strength, from the point of view of the Richtmyer-Von Neumann viscosity technique. Numerical solutions of this problem has been obtained in viscous and non-viscous regions. A similarity solution of this problem is shown to exist. We have shown that field variables change rapidly when the magnetic field is imposed in both the viscous and the non-viscous regions.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers a spherical shock, in a conducting gas, of self-gravitating gas propagating in a non-uniform atmosphere at rest. Similarity principle has been used to reduce the equations governing the flow to ordinary differential equations under the assumption that the density varies as an inverse-power of distance from the point or explosion. The total energy of the wave is variable.

Notes: Abstract The electrochemical corrosion behaviour (passivity, pitting and repassivation) of austenitic stainless steel AISI 321 containing titanium has been investigated in methanol containing different concentrations of sulphuric acid (0.001–1 M). The cathodic reaction is observed to be hydrogen evolution. Anodic polarization of the stainless steel reveals a characteristic ‘cathodic loop’ in methanol with higher concentrations of H2SO4 (0.1 M and 1 M). A clear and stable passivity is also observed in each solution mixture which breaks down at higher potentials due to pitting. The passivation current, passivity range, pitting intensity and pitting potential are found to vary with variation of acid concentration in the methanol. The kinetics of pitting and the morphology of the pits have been studied. A variation in concentration of acid and scan rate has been found to influence the protection potential of the stainless steel.

Notes: Abstract Carrier frequency-dependent intrinsic parameters of an ion-implanted silicon photo-MESFET have been analysed theoretically. The internal gate source capacitanceC gs is found to increase with increasing carrier frequency under the normally OFF condition and the change is small under the normally ON condition. Also, the internal drain-source resistanceR ds increases with frequency at a fixed flux density and wavelength of operation. The ion-implanted photo-MESFET could become useful as optically controlled switching device in digital circuits.

Notes: Abstract Non-similarity solutions of the equations governing the motion of a perfect gas behind a cylindrical shock wave of variable strength have been obtained. These solutions are applicable to both the weak and the strong shocks. The nature of flow and field variables are illustrated through graphs. The total energy of the wave is taken to be constant.

Notes: Abstract Similarity solutions describing the flow of a perfect gas behind a spherical and cylindrical shock wave in a magnetic field with radiation heat flux have been investigated. The total energy of the expanding wave has been assumed to remain constant. The solutions, however, are only applicable to a gaseous medium where the undisturbed pressure falls as the inverse square of the distance from the line of explosion.

Notes: Abstract Self-similar flows of a perfect gas behind the cylindrical shock wave propagating exponentially in an atmosphere whose density varies inversely as the fourth power of shock radius are investigated. The effects of radiation flux has also been taken into consideration. The total energy of the wave is constant.

Notes: Summary The present study represents an attempt to optimize the overall slope angle of a lead-zinc mine in Rajasthan state, which could extend to a depth of 170 m during the first phase of mining. Detailed geotechnical investigations were conducted. These included geotechnical mapping, determination of the physio-mechanical properties of intact rock, determination of the rock mass rating and estimation of rock mass properties. Information was collected from mapping of benches and borehole logs. Based on these data, limit equilibrium and numerical simulation techniques were applied in order to assess the stability of the slopes and determine an optimum slope angle. From these investigations it has been inferred that the overall footwall and hangingwall slopes should be 42° and 48° respectively.
