Notes: A method for accelerating particles which can be used in delivering genes into living cells is described. By inducing a one-dimensional elastic strain wave impulse in a fixed solid plate, the micron particles adhered to the center of the plate's free surface can be accelerated to a velocity up to a few tens of meters per second. Two schemes have been devised in which the impulsive waves were generated by mechanical collision and by a piezoelectric transducer, respectively. Their principles are outlined and the initial velocities of particles are analyzed. The collision scheme has been tested experimentally for a long period and proved to be efficient in plant gene transfer. The particle velocities were measured in a range of 43–82 m/s, which agreed well with the results of the theoretical approximation. The initial velocity of particles accelerated by the piezoelectric transmitter may be controlled by changing the driving voltage. The apparatus for accelerating particles using an elastic wave impulse features tightly static sealing of the sample chamber and minimization of the aerodynamic effect caused by particle acceleration. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: To avoid difficulties due to the complexity of the Lax pair of the sine-Gordon equation, the orthogonality relations of the squared Jost solutions is derived simply using the 1+1 dimensional Green's theorem. The direct perturbation theory for sine-Gordon in the laboratory reference is re-developed, correcting some numerical coefficients in published orthogonality relationships. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] We report a simple, direct gene transfer technique based on sonication. Transient expression of a β–glucoronidase (GUS) gene was detected in 86 percent of treated leaf segments of Nicotiana tabacum, and the area of transformed tissue on these segments reached 60–70 percent. GUS ...

Notes: The fatigue wear behavior of PA1010 composites filled with metal oxide particles wasexperimentally investigated. The nylon composites were prepared by compression molding methodwith different contents of PA1010 and CuO, Fe3O4, Al2O3 particles. The rolling contact counterpartfor nylon composite samples was 1045 carbon steel ring. The rolling contact tests were performedon M-2000 wear test machine in dry friction condition. It was found that the fatigue wear measuredin mass loss of nylon composites increases to rolling contact cycles. Most of the samples show anapproximately linear relationship between wear mass loss and rolling cycles. Three kinds of metaloxide particles have different effects on the fatigue wear behavior of nylon composites. Thecontents of metal oxide particles have important influence on the fatigue wear behavior. The nyloncomposites filled with CuO (30 wt.%) or Fe2O3 (30 wt.%) will result in the comparatively highestwear resistance, the wear mass loss reduces to about 70% of pure nylon. Al2O3 particles is not agood choice for increasing the rolling wear resistance of nylon composites. It is found that thecontact fatigue controls the wear mechanism of nylon composites under rolling contact

Notes: Based on Brinson’s one-dimensional thermo-constitutive law of SMA and classical platetheory, linear non-axisymmetric vibration of uniform heated composite annular plate embeddedwith circumferential SMA fibers is investigated. Natural frequencies of the annular plates withimmovably clamped boundary condition, depending on the temperature rise are obtained by usingshooting method. The characteristic curves of first four natural frequencies of non-axisymmetricvibration versus temperature rise are plotted. Influences of the volume fraction and the initial strainof SMA on the natural frequencies of plate are analyzed. The numerical results show that, theactivation of SMA can enhance the natural frequency both in the inverse martensite transformationtemperature range and the thermal buckling temperature

Notes: The coatings for elevated temperature erosion resistance in circulating fluidized bed (CFB)boilers were fabricated by high velocity arc spraying process and CrB powder wire. Themicrostructure and phase component of the coating were examined by optical microscopy(OM) andTransmission electron microscopy (TEM). The properties including microhardness, adhesionstrength and in-situ erosion rate of the coating were measured. The failure mechanism was alsodiscussed based on the experimental data. The OM results showed that the coating consisted ofindividual flat lamella, thin oxide layer, porosity and very small amount of particle whichcharacterized as different shape and color respectively. TEM results indicated that the phases withinthe lamella were mainly composed of α phase, amorphous phase and other nanosized particle phaseof Fe23(C,B)6, Cr23C6 etc.. The amount of amorphous phase near the substrate was more than that inthe other area indicating that the appearance of amorphous phase was related to the high cooling rateof the coating. The microhardness was about 860~1100HV0.2. The coating exhibited higherosion-corrosion resistance, which was about six times as 20G steel. The advantage of the coatingwith excellent performance, simple process and low cost made it possible to find potential applicationin power plants

Notes: The CrB Particles Reinforced MMC Coating was prepared by using high velocity arcspraying (HVAS) method. Through a series of experiments, including metallographic, SEM andEPMA investigation, the microstructure and composition of the coating were analyzed in details.Additionally, the abrasion resistance mechanism of the coating was studied through field test andobservation on the abrasion surface of the coating under the SEM. The results show that themicrostructure of the coating is characterized by typical compact laminated structure composed ofsuccessive metal matrix and hard particles mainly of borides of chromium and oxides of chromium. The abrasion resistance mechanism of the coating lies in two aspects. One is that the hard particlesscatter evenly and dispersedly in the coating, which can reinforce the coating and play a barrier roleto hinder the movement of the abrasion particles. The other is that the metal matrix with wellductility and toughness make a buffer action to the impact caused by the abrasion particles, therebythe waste rate of the coating can be greatly slowed down. The results also show that the hardness, shape and quantity of the reinforced particles have magnificent influence on the abrasion resistanceof the coating made in this paper

Notes: Based on the experimental and theoretic studies of the frictional materials in literatures, ageneralized non-linear strength theory is presented. The generalized strength theory has the samemathematical form as classical Drucker-Prager strength (D-P) criteria. It describes strengthcharacteristics of various materials using a unified formula, and it includes or approximatesnumerously present strength criterions. The shape of generalized Drucker-Prager (GDP) criteria isconvexly smooth curve between the classical D-P criteria (upper bound) and the external contour lineof Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) criteria (lower bound) on the deviator-plane, and a straight line on themeridian-plane. Through variation of parameters in the criteria, a series of criterions ranging betweenthese two bounds may be introduced by the unified strength criteria, and the different strengthproperties of various materials were denoted
