Description: The Longmenshan fault that ruptured during the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan (China) earthquake was drilled to a depth of 1200 m, and fault rocks including those in the 2008 earthquake slip zone were recovered at a depth of 575–595 m. We report laboratory strength measurements and microstructural observations from samples of slip zone fault rocks at deformation conditions expected for coseismic slip at borehole depths. Results indicate that the Longmenshan fault at this locality is extremely weak at seismic slip rates. In situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that graphite was formed along localized slip zones in the experimental products, similar to the occurrence of graphite in the natural principal slip zone of the 2008 Wenchuan rupture. We surmise that graphitization occurred due to frictional heating of carbonaceous minerals. Because graphitization was associated with strong dynamic weakening in the experiments, we further infer that the Longmenshan fault was extremely weak at borehole depths during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, and that enrichment of graphite along localized slip zones could be used as an indicator of transient frictional heating during seismic slip in the upper crust.

Notes: A novel synthetic route to the formation of less air sensitive fullerene superconductors by mixing oxygen-containing alkaline compounds with C60 has been discovered. A high-resolution single-crystal x-ray study on the K-doped samples shows that the ratio of potassium to C60 is not 3:1. The observed stability enhancement and the off-stoichiometry of potassium content may originate from the presence of oxygen which serves as an oxidative agent. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The crystal structure of ammonium bis-μ-oxalatotitanate(III) dihydrate, NH4[Ti(C2O4)2].2H2O, is reinvestigated by careful single-crystal X-ray diffraction using Mo Kα (room temperature and 130 K) and Ag Kα radiation (room temperature). It crystallizes in noncentrosymmetric hexagonal space group P6422, with cell parameters a = 8.947 (2), c = 10.898 (1) Å, Z = 3, F(000) = 423, Mr = 278.1, Dx = 1.833, R = 0.035, wR = 0.030 for 2296 observed reflections with I ≥ 2σ(I), on Ag Kα data. Accurate data measurement was applied using two wavelengths (0.7107 Å for Mo Kα and 0.5609 Å for Ag Kα in order to study the charge density distribution and also to investigate the wavelength effect in such investigations. A total of 22650 and 20298 reflections were measured using Mo Kα radiation at room temperature and 130 K, respectively, and 18361 reflections using Ag Kα radiation. The Ti atom is coordinated by four oxalate dianions with coordination number 8 in an approximate symmetry of D4 geometry. Each oxalato ligand is bridged between two Ti atoms and forms an infinite polymeric spiral column along the c axis. The deformation density maps, Δρ, obtained from all three data sets are consistent and agree well. Although the formal charge of Ti in this complex is 3+, with only one electron on the 3d orbitals expected, the net atomic charge on Ti from this study is, 2̃+. Charge asphericity around the Ti atom caused by the splitting of 3d orbitals is clearly observed in the deformation density. The d-orbital populations are evaluated from multipole refinement. The expected d1 electron is mainly located in the dZ2 orbital.

Notes: The molecular reorientation induced by an external electric field has been determined for the first time in order to obtain a microscopic understanding of the interaction between crystals and electric fields. Changes in scattering intensity are found when an electric field is applied parallel to the polar axis of a non-linear optical crystal of 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA), which has large piezoelectric constants [Paturle, Graafsma, Sheu, Coppens & Becker (1991). Phys. Rev. B, 43, 14683–14691]. The effect has been analyzed in terms of a change in cell parameters, a molecular rotation of 0.45 (5) × 10−2° about an axis nearly parallel to the electric field and a molecular translation of 0.19 (3) × 10−3] Å along the b axis. Since the orientation of the molecular dipole moment vector is unaffected, the piezoelectric contribution to the permittivity for this electric field direction is small. As expected, the centrosymmetric crystals of p-nitroaniline and p-nitropyridine N-oxide have no first-order converse piezoelectric effect and show no measurable change in X-ray scattering intensity under the influence of an external electric field of 2.2 × 106 V m−1. For the non-centrosymmetric crystals of 3-methyl-4-nitropyridine N-oxide, the effect is small, in agreement with the small value of the piezoelectric constants.

Notes: Abstract  Experiments of helical excitation using piezoelectric actuators on jet flows and lifted flames are performed to enhance the understanding of the effects of vortical structures of various instability modes on the stabilization mechanism of the lifted flame. In addition to the common ring and braid structures, five or seven azimuthal fingers (or lobes) can be identified in the transverse image of the jet near field. Excitation with various helical modes enhances the azimuthal structures and entrainment in the near field. When helically excited with the asymmetric m=1 mode, one of the fingers is enhanced and may evolve into a strong streamwise vortex. The streamwise vortices generated in the braid region between the adjacent ring vortices may enhance fuel-air mixing due to additional azimuthal entrainment upstream of a lifted flame when helically excited with the m=1 mode. Therefore, the streamwise vortex serves as an additional path of high probability of premixed flammable layer for the upstream propagation of the lifted flame so that the flame base on one side of the lifted flame may extend farther upstream and the flame base is inclined. In addition to the inclined flame base, multiple-legs phenomenon is also observed in the flame base, which is strongly associated with fingers of the helical modes of the jet flow.
