Notes: The temporal coherence of a cw laser has been measured using self-diffraction from a thin film of a rhodamine 6G-doped boric-acid glass. This and other similar glasses cover a wide spectral range over which such measurements can be made. The input power requirements for this technique to work in these glasses are rather nominal. These glasses can be used to obtain mutual coherence function of beams even when they are cross polarized. The results of an interferometric measurement are given for comparison.

Notes: With a long-term plan to develop transgenic pigeonpea with resistance to fungal disease, the transfer of a rice chitinase gene to pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.] is reported here. The rice chitinase gene harboured in the plasmid pCAMBIA 1302:RChit was delivered via the Agrobacterium-mediated method to the cotyledonary node explants followed by subsequent regeneration of complete plants on selection media containing hygromycin. Putative transformed pigeonpea plants were recovered with stringent selection pressure and confirmed using molecular techniques. Stable integration and expression of the chitinase gene has been confirmed in the T0 and T1 transgenics through molecular analysis.

Notes: In estimating aquifer parameters from pumping test data, it is often found advantageous to use recovery, rather than drawdown, measurements. An equation, derived from Cooper-Jacob's (1946), is suggested for estimating storativity using residual drawdown measurements from an observation well.

Notes: The possible formation of free radicals in dry milk proteins by mechanical energy has been studied by electron spin resonance (ESRI spectroscopy. Grinding of various milk proteins with mortar and pestle for 5 min or longer yielded perceptible electron spin resonance signals. The signals did not exhibit characteristics of hyperfine structure and all had g-values close to that of a free electron (2.001. The intensity of the signals was particularly strong for the sulfhydryl-containing proteins, β-lactoglobulin and k-casein, and increased with grinding time. The signals were considerably reduced by subsequent heating of the dry protein at 100°/10 min. The grinding of whole casein was in ail cases accompanied by the release of a gluey odor, suggesting that the gluey-flavor defect may be related to protein fragmentation.

    Notes: Kyanite phases Al2SiO5 (I), Al2GeO5 (II) and Cr2GeO5 (III) were synthesized at 20 kb/1000°C (I, II) and at 1 atm/1150°C (III). Powder X-ray patterns for II and III are presented in comparison with that of I. Triclinic lattice constants are a0 = 7.127 (7.253, 7.422), b0 = 7.858 (8.011, 8.244), c0 = 5.570 (5.649, 5.815) Å, α = 89.99 (89.97, 90.58), β = 101.22 (101.23, 101.10), γ = 106.04 (106.05, 106.01)°, and V0 = 293.6 (308.9, 339.9) Å3 for the kyanite phases I (II, III, respectively). Infrared absorption spectra of I (II, III) were measured between 1400 and 200 cm−1. Band shifts produced by the isomorphous substitutions allow tentative band assignments of the Al2SiO5-kyanite spectrum: 1032, 1009, 940 cm−1 ν3 (SiO4); 898 cm−1 ν1 (SiO4); 720, 438 cm−1 ν4, ν2 (SiO4) ?; banes between 674 and 505 cm−1 and at 467 cm−1 are mainly due to octahedral Al–O vibrations.

Notes: Abstract We present a brief review of non-linear optical investigations on dye-doped solids using low-power CW lasers. After a brief introduction to the photophysics of the dye molecules, we discuss specific nonlinear processes such as self-diffraction, optical phase conjugation, two-beam coupling and polarization gratings in these systems. The application potential of dye-doped solid devices is discussed.

Notes: Abstract This paper outlines some flaws of the faddist social forestry movement that is currently sweeping Canada's volunteer NGOs. Typically, these include: Canadian NGOs' ignorance of tropical ecology; their inability to adequately communicate with the Third World clientel because of the socio-cultural barriers; a propensity to undertake numerous development projects and thus seek to bloat their organizations so as to claim federal government grants; and most of all, complaints of alleged racism against NGOs by Canada's ethnic minorities who are kept out of the development field. Impacts on the Third World development of each of these flaws are briefly noted. The paper concludes by offering some recommendations for improving Canadian volunteer NGOs' performance in social forestry in the Third World.

Notes: Abstract Performance of mustard (Brassica campestris) crop cultivated underAcacia nilotica single tree, grown under irrigated and rainfed situations was studied for plant population and biomass production. Root behaviour of trees and mustard crop under tree canopy and open areas was also studied. Plant density and biomass production of mustard crop declined with increasing tree canopy depth towards tree trunk. There was a 64.58% reduction in biomass production under an irrigated field upto 4 m and cent percent up to 3 m in rainfed fields as compared to per unit mean yield data recorded at 21 m distance from the tree base in an open field. The plant density and biomass production data and root behaviour of both trees and crop showed a close relationship. The plant density and yield of crop tend to increase with the increase in depth of tree roots. Irrigating the mustard field enhances crop yield and plant density in the affected area as compared with the rainfed field.

Notes: Summary Young froglets ofRana breviceps do not possess the power to regenerate forelimbs after amputation through metacarpals. However, 5 min immersion of limb stumps in an oily solution of 150,000 IU vitamin A palmitate immediately after amputation, and once on each of the 3 subsequent days, induced definite though hypomorphic regeneration in 100% cases.
