Notizen: The importance of wage structure is frequently interpreted as indirect evidence of the role played by labour market institutions. The current paper follows in this tradition, examining the role of wage structure in explaining the trend in the gender wage gap over the period 1973–91 for both Australia and the UK. The focus is upon whether changes in wage structure (and associated gender wage gap) both across country and over time are compatible with institutional explanations. Combining comparisons both cross-country and over time yields a more stringent, albeit indirect, test of the role of institutions.

Notizen: Purpose - The paper attempts to project the future trend of the gender wage gap in Great Britain up to 2031. Design/methodology/approach - The empirical analysis utilises the British Household Panel Study Wave F together with Office for National Statistics (ONS) demographic projections. The methodology combines the ONS projections with assumptions relating to the evolution of educational attainment in order to project the future distribution of human capital skills and consequently the future size of the gender wage gap. Findings - The analysis suggests that gender wage convergence will be slow, with little female progress by 2031 unless there is a large rise in returns to female experience. Originality/value - The paper has projected the pattern of male and female skill acquisition together with the associated trend in wages up to 2031.

Notizen: The F1 progeny of the cross of two salt-tolerant lines of Thinopyrum elongatum [Host] D. R. Dewey grew better than either parent under non-saline and saline growth conditions. Under non-saline conditions, the hybrid produced 1.8 times as much vegetative tissue as one parent and 3.2 times more than the other parent in the same length of time. The relative growth rates of the 2 parental lines decreased equally as media osmotic potentials decreased. The relative growth rate of the hybrid did not decrease as rapidly as that of the parents; therefore, it was concluded that the greater growth of the hybrid was due to increased salt tolerance. Carbohydrate reserves and water-soluble solutes believed to be involved in osmotic adjustment were assayed to determine if there were any differences between the hybrid and its parents in their abilities to accumulate these compounds. The concentrations of these constituents were measured at dawn and at dusk of the same day in plants grown in media at osmotic potentials ranging from –0.1 to –1.2 MPa. There were no differences in pool sizes of the organic compounds in the 3 lines. Starch increased 10–40 fold in leaves from dawn to dusk and sucrose increased 100-fold. However, this pattern was unaffected by salinity. Conversely, betaine concentrations increased with increasing salinity but were the same at dawn and dusk. Na+ and K+ were affected by both light and salinity. Cl was one-half (Na++ K+) on a molar basis under all conditions. Proline accumulated when (Na++ K+) exceeded 200 μmol (g fresh weight)−1. Since this amount of (Na++ K+) existed only in tissues harvested at dusk from severely saline-stressed plants, only leaves from such plants harvested at dusk contained proline.

Notizen: Abstract. The paper examines the influence of unemployment insurance on the duration of employment spells in Canada using the 1988–90 Labour Market Activity Survey. The primary focus of the paper is to evaluate whether estimated UI effects are sensitive to the degree to which institutional rules and regulations governing UI eligibility and entitlement are explicitly modelled. The key result of the paper is that it is indeed important to allow for institutional detail when estimating unemployment insurance effects. Estimates using simple proxies for eligibility indicate small, often insignificant UI effects. The size and significance of the effects rise as more realistic versions of the variables are adopted. The estimates using the eligibility variables incorporating the greatest level of institutional detail suggest that a jump in the hazard rate by a factor of 2.3 may not be an unreasonable estimate of the effect.

Notizen: Oryza sativa L.) production caused by salinity is to compensate yield reduction by increasing seeding density. Our objectives were to investigate the effects of salinity and seeding density on grain yield and yield components, and analyze the relationships of the yield components to final grain yields at different seeding densities under salinity. Plants were grown in the greenhouse in sand irrigated with nutrient solutions. The treatments included seeding densities of 400, 600, and 720 seeds m−2 and salt levels of 1.0, 3.9, and 6.5 dS m−1. Salinity effects were highly significant on grain yield, plant stand, seed weight per plant, seed weight per panicle, and spikelets per panicle, but not significant on panicle density, kernel weight, and shoot weight per plant at seeding densities tested. Grain yield was not significantly increased with an increase of seeding density. Plant stand and panicle density were significantly increased, while seed weight per plant, fertility, and harvest index were significantly decreased with increases of seeding densities. The density-dependent seed weight per plant under salinity was explained by the competition within and among plants at high-density populations affected by salinity. Seed weight per panicle accounted for 62% of total variation and contributed more than panicle density to the grain yield under salinity. It was concluded that yield loss under moderate salinities may not be compensated for by increasing seeding density above normal density levels.

Notizen: Abstract Designing, viewed broadly as the human capacity to link thought and action, has meaning and value in the world that transcends its material associations. Given the nature and urgency of current socioeconomic and ecological problems, the creative, generative concept of design must be made more accessible and useful. Accordingly, my intent is to dispel prevailing, narrow, specialist impressions of design and to advance in the public mind a larger concept that can influence deliberations and behavior in society-at-large. One of today's most critical areas of need, and one where I think design can make a particularly significant contribution, is education. A critical task for such “design-based education” is enabling people to design an ecologically and economically sustainable future.
