Notes: For ion beams used for ion beam etching and sputtering in electronic device technology and for monitoring plasma wall interactions, a pyroelectric detector has been developed to measure the current density of neutralized ions and the fraction of the total beam which is neutralized. The pyroelectrically induced charges due to beam heating of a PVDF film and the deposited charge from the ion beam are measured with a charge sensitive and current sensitive amplifier, respectively. The pyroelectric detector has a sensitivity of 1000 V/W and 1/e response time of 2 s. Beam current densities in the range 0.01–100 μA/cm2 of 1 keV particle energy can be measured.

Notes: The switching characteristics and magnetization vortices of 15 nm thick cobalt structures patterned to different widths of 100, 200, and 600 nm were investigated. The effects of linewidth and aspect ratio (length/width) were systematically studied using an alternating gradient magnetometer (AGM), an atomic force microscope/magnetic force microscope (MFM) and superconducting quantum interference device. The AGM and MFM show that trapped magnetization vortices appear in structures with low aspect ratios (length/width)=1.5, 2, but not in structures with high aspect ratio (length/width)=3,4. It is found that the magnetization vortices of these patterned elements are strongly dependent on the width of the element with narrower linewidth more clearly showing the presence of magnetization vortices. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Voids formed in neutron irradiated metals are faceted on various crystallographic planes. This faceting has been shown to cause significant anisotropy in the small-angle scattering pattern. It is shown that it is possible to obtain the specific void surface energies from small-angle diffuse scattering data.

Notes: A new small-angle X-ray scattering facility which utilizes a 6 kW rotating anode, pin-hole collimation, and a position-sensitive proportional counter has been developed. As presently constructed, the minimum scattering vector κ (= 4π sin &thgr;/2) which can be reached with Cu Kα radiation is 5 × 10−3 Å−1. Under these conditions the flux incident on the specimen has been found to be 6 × 105 photons s−1. The system has several advantages compared with traditional long-slit geometries; namely, (i) it can quantitatively measure anisotropic scattering distributions, (ii) it avoids large mathematical corrections of the data for slit-smearing effects, and (iii) it minimizes double Bragg scattering in crystalline materials and multiple diffuse scattering in amorphous or liquid materials. To illustrate the performance of this instrument, the scattering curves obtained from four widely different samples are shown. These are: polyethylene, a neutron-irradiated aluminium single-crystal containing voids, a dilute suspension of Ludox spheres, and duck tendon collagen. Quantitative comparisons of the performance with a Kratky camera and with the neutron small-angle scattering facility in Jülich are given.

Notes: The radius of gyration, rg, of atactic polystyrene molecules in the bulk polymer has been measured by low-angle neutron scattering from dilute solid solutions of poly-proto-styrene in poly-deutero-styrene with concentrations of 5 % and 0.5 % tagged solute molecules.

Notes: Analytical explicit expressions have been derived for multiple-scattering effects under assumptions which are usually fulfilled in small-angle scattering. The expressions are used to evaluate quantitatively distortions of scattering patterns caused by multiple scattering. The distortions are discussed in terms of changes of the forward-scattering cross section, the radius of the gyration, the integrated intensity, the Porod region and Porod constant. In addition, the analytical expressions have been used to calculate the scattering cross section of the sample from scattering patterns which are strongly affected by multiple scattering.

Notes: The concept of spline functions is introduced as a new tool for resolution error correction in small-angle scattering. After discussing the approximating properties with respect to the estimation of experimental distributions and their derivatives from statistical data natural cubic splines are applied to the closed solution of the slit-height effect with Gaussian weighting functions including infinite slit height and to the correction of the slit-width effect based on Sauder's unfolding series. On the basis of an extended variational problem with one constraint taking adequately into account the statistical errors of the data a general procedure using cubic splines is developed for the solution of the integral equations associated with the three distinct types of resolution errors and arbitrary weighting functions. Computer simulations of small-angle scattering experiments have been performed to demonstrate the efficiency of the spline function algorithms in the different applications using scattering functions and slit-height and slit-width distributions of various kinds.

Notes: Al–Zn alloys of various concentrations in the final pre-precipitation stage have been studied with X-ray and neutron techniques. Reasonable agreement in absolute integrated intensities and in the characteristic parameters of the scattering pattern has been obtained. By optimizing the resolution in the neutron experiments an ordering parameter and new information on pre-precipitation-size and size distribution could be deduced from the scattering data.
