    Notes: This paper develops a labor-based model where a worker chooses between not only work and leisure, as the traditional labor models have argued, but rather between labor, leisure and the purchase of insurance. The model allows the insurance buyer to determine the amount of insurance he is willing to work for and purchase while maximizing utility and derives the shadow price of risk, thus the value of life. The model is applied to quadratic, logarithmic, and exponential utility functions. Results can help insurance companies determine the cost of insurance associated with a specific job and related risk.

    Notes: In a recent article by Rosenthal, Zydiak, and Chaudhry (1995), a mixed integer linear programming model was introduced to solve the vendor selection problem for the case in which the vendor can sell items individually or as part of a bundle. Each vendor offered only one type of bundle, and the buyer could purchase at most one bundle per vendor. The model employed n(m+ 1) binary variables, where n is the number of vendors and m is the number of products they sell. The existing model can lead to a purchasing paradox: it may force the buyer to pay more to receive less. We suggest a reformulation of the same problem that (i) eliminates this paradox and reveals a more cost-effective purchasing strategy; (ii) uses only n integer variables and significantly reduces the computational workload; and (iii) permits the buyer to purchase more than one bundle per vendor.

    Notes: Impact of information technology on firm productivity has received significant attention in information systems literature. Although many studies were performed to investigate this effect, the results were not conclusive in supporting a systematic effect. This study investigates this phenomenon in both manufacturing and service industries by considering a sample of 85 manufacturing and 77 service firms. Our research methodology utilizes a combination of various data envelopment analysis models and non-parametric statistical techniques in testing for the influence of information technology investment on firm productivity. We investigate this effect under conditions of both constant and non-constant returns to scale assumptions. Our results provide some very interesting insights and recommendations.

    Notes: Agility and agile manufacturing are recent organizational development philosophies that industry and academia are studying. Benchmarking is a business practice that will aid in the study, refinement, and application of agility principles. This paper focuses on two issues, benchmarking agile environments and agile benchmarking requirements. Benchmarking process, tools and metrics issues are discussed within the perspective of agility requirements. The process, tools and metrics discussion allows for a simultaneous study of the two major issues in integrating benchmarking and agility. In this paper a need for a developmental evolution in benchmarking is also observed. A number of potential directions and enablers are defined based on current practice and emerging mechanisms for agility and benchmarking.

    Notes: Purpose - To introduce and provide an overview of the various issues related to environmental (green) supply chain management performance measurement. Design/methodology/approach - The work relies on experiences, case studies and other literature related to performance measurement in environmental supply chains. It seeks to integrate works in supply chain management, environmental management, and performance management into one framework. A systems framework forms the discussion outline with a focus on controls/pressures, inputs, tools, and outputs as major categories for evaluation and review. Findings - Provides an integrative framework for study, design and evaluation of green supply chain management performance tools. The findings also identify a number of issues that need to still be addressed. Research limitations/implications - We have only one design of the issues in which numerous categorizations could be provided. There is limited research in this area and new and current models/developments can provide additional insight. Implications of the work is that these gaps exist and that significantly more work needs to be completed in this field. Practical implications - A very useful source of information for practitioners that seek to implement these systems within and between organizations. Also, the paper provides numerous areas which researchers could complete additional research and develop research agendas. Originality/value - This paper provides some of the very first insights into development of a green supply chain management performance measurement system. Typically performance measurement systems are internally and business focused, we expand on these issues by considering inter-organizational and environmental issues within a business context.

    Notes: Benchmarking involves the identification of best practices for improvement. It assists firms in reengineering their processes in order to achieve higher productivity. Although several methods have been proposed for benchmarking purposes, research in the development of analytical benchmarking tools is limited. This paper proposes an effective benchmarking technique based on computational geometry models. We develop and illustrate benchmarking for two and three-dimensional cases, which involve up to three performance measures, and subsequently address the procedure for the n-dimensional case. The results identify the improvements necessary across various dimensions of business processes in order to achieve higher efficiency. We also develop mathematical programming models that optimally allocate resources in order to attain these improvements.

    Green supply chain management in China: pressures, practices and performance (2005)

    Notes: Purpose - Green supply chain management (GSCM) has emerged as a key approach for enterprises seeking to become environmentally sustainable. This paper aims to evaluate and describe GSCM drivers, practices and performance among various Chinese manufacturing organizations. Design/methodology/approach - Based on a literature review, four propositions are put forward. An empirical study using survey research was completed. The survey questionnaire was designed with 54 items using literature and industry expert input. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to derive groupings of GSCM pressures, practice and performance from the survey data which included 314 responses. A categorical and descriptive nature of the results is then presented with an evaluation and comparative analysis with previous research findings. Findings - Chinese enterprises have increased their environmental awareness due to regulatory, competitive, and marketing pressures and drivers. However, this awareness has not been translated into strong GSCM practice adoption, let alone into improvements in some areas of performance, where it was expected. Research limitations/implications - The investigation and its findings are still relatively exploratory. Future research can investigate relationships identified in this work, as well as tease out mediating and moderating relationships. A more broadly-based and random sample study across China would also provide a better picture of this GSCM situation. Practical implications - Efforts made by Chinese enterprises together with the Chinese government have established a good foundation for further development. After China's entry into the WTO, a win-win relationship between foreign companies and Chinese manufacturers is still possible. Originality/value - This work is one of the few and pioneering efforts to investigate GSCM practices in China.
