Notes: Single lateral 180° phase mode operation is realized at a light output of up to 90 mW under pulsed operation using uncoated AlGaAs phased array lasers. Phased array lasers consist of six elements. Each element has a self-aligned structure, with an interface layer of low AlAs mole fraction, and is fabricated by a two-step metalorganic chemical vapor deposition method, together with dry etching. Spectrally resolved, near-field measurements show that the phased array laser oscillates in a completely single lateral mode under pulsed operation. Measurements also show that a slight broadening of the far-field lobes under continuous wave operation is caused by generation of multiple lateral modes.

Notes: A new AlGaAs phased array laser structure with dummy stripes outside the stripe region is developed. The dummy stripes are dashed line stripes along both edge elements of the array stripes. Therefore, current in these dummy stripes does not cause lasing, but does increase the temperature of the edge elements. Thermal distribution in the array stripes, which mainly causes multimode oscillation in phased array lasers, is effectively unified by the dummy stripes. As a result, completely single lateral 180° mode continuous-wave operation is realized for the first time in this novel phased array laser.

Notes: The complex ac magnetic initial susceptibility (χ=χ'−jχ‘) has been measured along the [100], [110], and [001] directions from 4.2 to 300 K. Along the two basal directions the spin-reorientation phase transition (SRT) is detected at TS =57.8 K as an abrupt steplike anomalous decrease in χ' for increasing temperature. The value of the experimental ratio χ'[110]/ χ[100] (approximately-equal-to)2 holds for T≥TS. The reversible magnetic moment rotation set on by the exciting ac magnetic field explains these results, allowing a fit from which the stress constant σ=42±1 kg/mm2 is derived. Along the [001] direction no anomaly in χ'(T) is detected at TS while a strong continuous increase is manifest above 150 K. It is explained by the onset of narrow wall motions between 180° domains induced by thermal excitations.

Notes: Microstructure of grain-boundary regions in sintered Nd15Fe77B8 magnets has been observed under a high-resolution TEM. Crystalline Nd-rich phase is not observed at all the grain boundaries, while amorphouslike layers are observed quite often. It has also been found that no bcc phase in as-sintered samples was observed before heating the samples but heating of the samples for annealing has caused bcc microcrystals to form in the edges of the matrix phase.

Notes: The temperature dependence of the coercivity (HcI)of Nd15(Fe1−xCox)77B8 and (Nd1−xDyx)15Fe77B8 sintered magnets and that of the saturation magnetization (Ms) and the anisotropy field (HA) of Nd2(Fe1−xCox)14B and (Nd1−xDyx)2Fe14B single crystals have been observed in the temperature range between 295 and 800 K. The dependence of the coercivity on the major magnetic properties of the matrix phase in the Nd-Fe-B based magnets are investigated using the μ0HA vs μ0HcI+Ms plot. It is demonstrated that this method of analysis is useful in studying the coercivity mechanism of the Nd-Fe-B based sintered magnets.

Notes: The 10B, 11B, and 57Fe spin-echo nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetization experiments have been performed for naturally abundant and 10B-enriched Nd2Fe14B at 1.3 and 4.2 K for frequencies from 10 to 80 MHz. It was found from a comparison of NMR spectra in zero field and in an external field of 6.0 kOe that the hyperfine fields at the domain edges and at the domain-wall centers are nearly the same. This implies that the Fe hyperfine field anisotropy is small in this system. The presence of spin canting was verified by the result that the 11B NMR frequency shift due to the applied external magnetic field does not exactly follow γ(11B)ΔH. The NMR technique proves to be sensitive in detecting the trace of Fe precipitate in the Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets.

Notes: A series of R-Fe-B (R=Nd or Pr) sintered magnets rich in B relative to R15Fe77B8 were synthesized to investigate the demagnetization processes for various configurations of R2Fe14B grains. The R2Fe14B grains in these magnets are well separated from each other by a surrounding B-rich R1.11Fe4B4 phase. The coercivity of Nd17Fe83−xBx at 320 K is increased from 11 to 18 kOe with an increase of B content from 17 to 37 at. %. With a decrease of temperature from 320 K, the coercivities of Nd-Fe-B magnets for x=17, 30, and 37 at. % exhibit a monotonic increase. However, below 50 K, the coercivity of the magnet with x=37 at. % decreases sharply to 5 kOe. This behavior is interpreted in terms of the ferromagnetic ordering of the Nd1.11Fe4B4 phase at about 20 K.

Notes: Single crystals of the compounds R2Fe14B some 1–4 mm in size have been grown for a study of the anisotropy of the magnetization curves. These curves for crystals with R=Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, and Tm were measured at the Service National des Champs Intenses, Grenoble, between 4.2 and 275 K, with fields of 0–18 T being applied along the [100], [110], and [001] directions. Magnetization curves for all five compounds are analyzed in terms of the exchange and crystal field interactions (including terms up to sixth order, which may differ at 4 f and 4g sites) following the analysis previously developed for Nd2Fe14B. Molecular field coefficients representing the exchange interactions between R and Fe spins decrease from light to heavy R compounds as previously deduced from analysis of Curie temperatures. The CEF parameters are approximately the same across the series. In particular, the A20 terms are constant to within 10%.

Notes: A Mössbauer study of the compositional series Nd2(Fe1−xCox)14B confirmed the preferential occupation of j2 sites by the Fe atoms at least for x〉0.6 and the strong dependence on x of the relative amount of Fe distributed on this type of site. The j2-site preference of Fe also influences the hyperfine field of Fe at the j2 site as a consequence of the higher concentration of Co around the j2 sites as compared to that of a statistical distribution.

Notes: Magnetization and anisotropy field of R2Co14B with R being La, Nd, and Gd and of Nd2(Fe1−xCox)14B have been measured on single-crystal specimens. The cobalt sublattice has a planar anisotropy: K1=−1.30 MJ/m3 at 4.2 K for La2Co14B with the [110] direction being the room-temperature easy direction of magnetization. The rare-earth ions in R2Co14B experience a smaller exchange field than in R2Fe14B, which results in a rapid reduction of the rare-earth sublattice magnetization and anisotropy with increasing temperature. Because of the planar anisotropy of cobalt and the weaker R-Co interactions than R-Fe, the anisotropy field of Nd2(Fe1−xCox)14B turns out to be almost independent of the cobalt concentration in a temperature range between 300 and 500 K.
