Notes: Summary The reliability of earthquake fault plane solutions usingP andPKP first motion data is discussed. Effects of the usefulness of the individual data, of the number and distribution of data around the focus, of great velocity contrasts in the focal region, and of the kind of projection technique are considered. The increase of the number of inconsistent data by a change in position of the three principal axes can be used as a more or less objective measure for the reliability of a solution. A selection of 52 mantle shock solutions is presented. More than 75% of these shocks is of the thrust (or block) and the normal or reverse fault motion type. Transcurrent type shocks decrease from 40 to 50% in the upper 200 km of the mantle to less than 15% below this level. Thrust (or block) type fault motions clearly represent the normal reaction of the deeper mantle material to earthquake generating stresses.

Notes: Summary Differences between epicenter azimuths and the direction of arrival of firstP-waves are determined from the horizontal seismograms of Djakarta station. Systematic azimuth deviations of more than 15° are encountered in the NW through N to SE azimuths. Azimuth deviations caused by a discontinuity dipping 5, 10 and 15° and with a ratio of velocity of longitudinal waves at either side of the discontinuity of 1.23, 1.38 and 1.52 are calculated. The most simple model suitable to the observed data is that of a discontinuity with a velocity ratio of about 1.5, dipping 8–10° in a N 10° E direction. In the S and W directions of Djakarta no dipping discontinuity is needed to account for the few observed data in these quadrants.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract The seismicity of Europe and the methods used to determine the mechanism in the focus of earthquakes are briefly summarized. In general, the fault plane solutions of European earthquakes are in agreement with an about W-E to WNW-ESE directed stress in the underground. The upper mantle earthquakes on the margin of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Calabrian arc form an indication for the generation of new ocean floor in the SE corner of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the wake of the ESE drifting Calabrian arc. The Aegean Sea sector resembles a “Verschluckungszone” for material drifting in from both NW and ENE. The about W-E directed stress field is probably coupled with that of the mid-ocean ridge system of the North Atlantic. Several data indicate that also during the Alpine orogenesis and even earlier the main stresses were directed W-E and not N-S as hitherto normally assumed.

Notes: Abstract The laboratory tests carried out in studying shear and tensile seismogenic displacements occurring in compressed samples, led us to search for earthquakes with a tensile source component. To determine this component in the seismic focus, a special procedure based on the construction of radiation patterns of the combined shear-tensile type is introduced. The criteria for selecting the events produced by the combined source mechanism are listed, and their limitations are mentioned. From the seismic zones with good azimuthal distribution of stations in the world seismic network nine earthquakes which occurred in the 6-year period 1976–1981 were analyzed; for these events better agreement of the observed and theoretical patterns was found for the combined shear-tensile source mechanism than for the pure double-couple mechanism. However, the share of the tensile component was always, found to be relatively small, ranging from 1 to 13 percent of the shear component. The comparison of the two solutions (double-couple vs. combined shear/tensile) is based on the first onset signs statistics. The results obtained indicate that tensile fracturing does not play a substantial role in the total amount of released seismic energy; on the orther hand, it is expected to be more important in the creation and development of focal zone morphology from both the instantaneous and long-term point of view.

Notes: Summary Using Lagrange's multiplicator, a least-squares solution for the position of the plane that is in best accord with a finit number of directions is derived. Reference is made to a seismo-tectonic problem to which the solution can be applied.
