    Notes: Abundant sand-sized mud aggregates in the Cooper and Diamantina Rivers, Lake Eyre Basin, Australia are attributed to bedload transport of aggregates formed in deeply-cracked floodplain soils. The conditions required for formation of pedogenic mud aggregates are: (i) abundant clay containing at least minor swelling clay, and (ii) a climate with at least seasonally hot dry periods. The worldwide distribution of these soils (Vertisols) suggests that a significant amount of mud is transported as pedogenic aggregates by modern rivers.Ancient analogues in which mud aggregates and Vertisol profiles have been recognized are the Jurassic East Berlin Formation (Connecticut, USA) and the Carboniferous Maringouin Formation (New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada). The dominant red mudstones of these formations are interpreted as mainly bedload sediments deposited by sheet floods in semi-arid palaeoclimates. The Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone (NSW, Australia) also contains sand-sized mudstone aggregates, thought to be pedogenic, but its paleosol and other facies point to formation in a wetter palaeoclimate. The indications are that bedload transport of mud as pedogenic aggregates was as significant a process in ancient rivers as it is at present.

    Notes: The Middle Devonian Malbaie Formation of Eastern Gaspé, Canada, comprises sharply alternating conglomerate and sandstone units. Their petrography suggests derivation from the same source, but palaeocurrents indicate different dispersal systems for the sand and gravel. The principal conglomerate facies is horizontally stratified, with well-developed imbrication, characteristic of deposition on a high-energy, proximal braidplain. Minor cross-stratified conglomerate shows well-defined size sorting, attributed to avalanching down foresets and sorting within minor bedforms on bar tops. The sandstone units mainly comprise erosion surfaces overlain by mudstone intraclasts, alternating with lineated low-angle to horizontally stratified sandstone or trough cross-stratified sandstone. The sandstone units were deposited on a proximal braidplain with highly variable discharge, but the absence of calcrete indicates that dry periods were not prolonged.The Malbaie is the coarsest, uppermost formation of a Devonian clastic wedge formed during the Acadian Orogeny. The uniformity of facies association and palaeocurrents, particularly in conglomerate units, indicates derivation from a broad upwarp to the south. This implies that the Acadian uplands resulted from straight compression, in contrast to the localized uplifts formed by strike-slip faulting during the Carboniferous.

    Notes: The Donjek is a proglacial braided river with a coarse heterogeneous bedload ranging from −7 to +8 φ. The three reaches studied comprise, in downstream order, a zig-zag reach formed by the interaction of the river and tributary fans, a straight reach, and a meandering reach, all with internal braids. The straight to meandering junction is unusual in that slope and discharge both increase.The dominant bed-forms are longitudinal gravel bars, which migrate only during flood. Their internal structure is poorly defined horizontal bedding, which suggests that gravel deposition takes place on the upper bar surfaces, rather than on foreset slopes at the downstream margins. At lower stage sand accumulates in wedge-shaped units lateral to the bars, with internal high-angle cross-stratification and ripple cross-lamination; other sedimentary structures are rare. A simple facies model can be constructed on the basis of two trends: a proximal-distal trend, and an active-stable trend. Both result in the increased abundance of fine-grained sediment.Random directional measurements give good estimates of the river trend from small-scale structures (mainly ripples) and from channels, the latter giving the closest approximation. The variability of ripple orientation always exceeds that of channels. Both increase in the meandering reach, although the divergence of the vector mean from the river trend is not significantly greater than in the straight reach.

    Notes: Channelized bodies up to 9 m thick in the Pennsylvanian Waddens Cove Formation show low width: thickness ratios (8:1 to 14:1), up to four vertically stacked storeys, and deep incision into associated floodplain strata. The presence of lateral accretion sets up to 6 m thick indicates that the migration of bank-attached bars was a major channel-filling process. The progressive rise in elevation of the basal part of the accretion surfaces where the sets adjoin the steeply inclined sides of the channel bodies shows that the channel floor aggraded progressively as the bars approached the channel sides. In planform, the river system probably showed a low-sinuosity, incised valley within which the channel followed a more sinuous and partially confined course.The alluvium surrounding the channel bodies includes sandstone sheets attributed to crevasse splay and levee accumulation. The upper strata of many sheet's and some channel bodies contain siliceous duricrusts (ganisters) which formed by pedogenic lithification of sandy material commencing shortly after the landforms became inactive. The channel bodies contain duricrust-bearing slumpblocks and show stepped margins over duricrusts. The stepped nature of the banks suggests that duricrusts were an important factor in confining the reach, and we suggest that channel-body geometry was influenced, although not necessarily controlled, by the presence of the lithified layers.Alternation in the Waddens Cove Formation of grey, coal-bearing zones with red, duricrust-rich zones is attributed to water-table fluctuation in response to base-level changes. The low width: thickness ratios and aggradation mode'of the channel bodies may in part reflect channel incision and subsequent aggradation resulting from these allocyclic events.

    Notes: Abstract Sedimentation in rivers is dominated by a complex set of physical processes, associated with the unidirectional flow of water. Variations in these processes give rise to different fluvial channel types, whose character can commonly be recognised in the ancient record. Chemical and biological processes are comparatively unimportant in fluvial sedimentation. In contrast, physical, chemical or biological processes can each dominate sedimentation in lakes. Physical (clastic) deposition dominates in high-latitude and mountain lakes (in which chemical and biological activity are low), and in lakes with high relief of the drainage basin and lake floor. Its variety reflects a range of processes influenced by river inflow, wave and current action, thermal and density effects. Economic benefits from the study of lake and river sedimentation include both resource and environmental aspects. An example is given of a mercury pollution study in a fluvial ecosystem. It shows that return to background levels can take place within a relatively short interval after cessation of pollutant input.
