Da sempre l’uomo è affascinato dallo spettacolo del cielo stellato che lo porta a porsi grandi domande: cosa sta sopra di noi? L’Universo è eterno o è nato, e come, in un tempo remoto? È finito o infinito? Quale è il suo futuro? Siamo soli oppure ci sono altri pianeti, altri mondi?
Per rispondere almeno in parte a queste domande, e con la convinzione che sia un dovere degli uomini di scienza trasmettere alla società notizia delle conoscenze acquisite, abbiamo scritto questo libro. Qui raccontiamo, con semplicità ma con rigore, come nell’ultimo secolo, scoperta dopo scoperta, lo schema dell’Universo che gli uomini si erano fatti nel passato sia andato in pezzi e un quadro diverso, affascinante e anche inquietante sia gradualmente emerso.
Questa storia non è però solo una storia dell'intelletto e della ragione; è anche una storia del sentimento. Non è un caso che gli autori di questo libro, esperti di fisica delle particelle e di fisica astroparticellare, siano stati colti da autentica passione per queste tematiche cosmologiche, per quello straordinario mistero che racchiude il cielo stellato.
