Notes: Seismic reflection, telluric and gravity results are given for the lifted area of Ferrara, in Northern Italy. The agreement is shown between the available shallow seismic data and the gravity evidences. For a portion of the above area where seismic results are particularly poor the vertical gradients method gives a resolution of a gravity anomaly and confirms the telluric information. The residual gravity values, the vertical gradients and the telluric data along a seismic line crossing the zone are compared with seismic results and with evidences from adjacent wells.

Notes: A special method is described for calculating the terrain correction of the observed gravity data. The ground around each station is divided into a certain number of sectors and a special integral of the topographical section is calculated along each dividing radius.A computation chart has been constructed, by means of which the integration is reduced to the measurement of an area or of the first moment of an area. A planimeter or alternatively an integrator have to be used for this measurement. The article shows how to trace the computation chart for the use of the first moment method. This method has been extensively tested by the author and on the basis of this experience it has been found that the method affords a considerable speeding up of the calculation and is, in this respect, superior to the other methods that have been used so far for calculating the terrain correction. The problem of the accuracy of the integrator is also discussed in this paper.

Notes: Abstract The effect of citrate on the growth of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis var. diacetylactis in milk has been investigated. Five strains of Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis var. diacetylactis were compared to their citrate-negative variants, which lack the plasmid coding for citrate permease. In most cases, acidification kinetics and the final bacterial concentration of pure cultures of parental and variant strains did not differ significantly. Co-cultures of parental and variant strains, however, systematically tended towards the predominance of parental strains. Citrate metabolism is responsible for this change, since the predominance of citrate-positive strains was not observed in the absence of citrate. Continuous culture in milk enabled the difference in growth rates between the parental strain Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis var. diacetylactis CDI1 and its citrate-negative variant to be quantified by following changes in the populations of the two co-cultured strains. At 26 °C, the growth rate of the parental strain was 7% higher than that of its citrate-negative variant. These results show that citrate metabolism slightly stimulates the growth of lactococci in milk.

Notes: Abstract  The synthesis of several ammonium derivatives of maleic acid diesters are reported. The starting material is the hemiester of maleic acid, easily obtained from ring opening of the maleic anhydride. The hemiester is submitted to functionalization with an aminated compound, followed by quaternari-zation with the convenient alkylation reagent. Products crystallize easily and yields are generally high. They have been fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and the CMC have been measured. Some of them have been engaged in emulsion polymerization with styrene or methyl methacrylate. Maleates functionalized with quaternary ammonium salts yield polystyrene particle sizes around 30 nm with a narrow size distribution without adding any additional emulsifier.

Notes: Summary Polymerizable surfactants derived from maleic anhydride have been synthesized. The hydrophilic part is obtained by a controlled ethylene oxide polymerization according to a new heterogeneous catalytic process. Some maleates derivatives have been obtained and fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR. Their cmc were also measured. Some of them have been engaged in styrene emulsion polymerization in which monodisperse latex particles have been produced.

Notes: A purified extract of H-protein, a subunit of the glycine cleavage complex of the pea leaf mitochondria, was investigated by liquid chromatography/mass spectromety (LC/MS) and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), using both continuous flow fast atom bombardment (CF-FAB) and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry. Determination of the molecular weight of the entire protein, a 14 kDa subunit of the glycine decarboxylase complex, was achieved by ESI mass spectrometry and revealed covalent binding of the protein to the stabilizing agent β-mercapto-ethanol. On-line LC/MS analysis of peptides arising from the endoproteinase Glu-C digestion of the H-protein was achieved using capillary columns (0.25 mm i.d.), and permitted confirmation of the previously reported sequence deduced from cDNA cloning experiments. The detailed interpretation of data extracted from these LC/MS experiments facilitated identification of peptides containing modified amino acid residues. In particular the identification of a lipoic acid cofactor, a rather unusual modified lysine residue which interacts with different active sites in the enzyme complex, was achieved using both LC/CF-FAB-MS and LC/ESI-MS. The exact location of this modified lysine residue was determined by obtaining fragment spectra of multiply protonated precursor ions of selected peptides, using on-line LC/MS/MS techniques.

Description: This study provides a taxonomic treatment and comparison of lower Gorstian (Silurian) radiolarians recovered from two sections of the Cape Phillips Formation in the Canadian Arctic that accumulated in two different paleoenvironmental settings. Twilight Creek is more basinal, located ~100 km from the paleo-shelf margin, whereas Snowblind Creek is located within 1 km of the paleo-shelf break, on Cornwallis Island. The fauna, like other material from the Cape Phillips Formation, is extremely well preserved and was recovered from four samples at two localities, all from the Lobograptus progenitor graptolite Zone, an interval that has few published studies regarding radiolarians. A total of 28 species are recognized, of which two are new and described herein ( Fusalfanus bilateralis n. sp. and Pseudospongoprunum parvispina n. sp.), belonging to the Haplotaeniatidae, Inaniguttidae, "Sponguridae", Ceratoikiscidae, Entactiniidae, Palaeoscenidiidae, and Secuicollactidae. Based on these new data, the stratigraphic ranges of some taxa are extended. The species concepts of several closely related inaniguttid species are re-evaluated. As a result, Inanihella tarangulica Nazarov and Ormiston, 1984 is transferred to the genus Fusalfanus Furutani, 1990 based on cortical shell structure, and Inanihella duroacus , Inanihella legiuncula , and Inanihella perarmata are synonymized under Fusalfanus tarangulica sensu lato. Aciferopylorum admirandum is transferred to Fusalfanus and considered a junior synonym of Fusalfanus osobudaniensis . The comparative analysis of taxonomic richness and composition reveals that the more distal sample from Bathurst Island exhibits a slight, but statistically significant, higher alpha diversity at the species rank than the more proximal basin/platform samples from Snowblind Creek. Biodiversity indices at the genus rank produced mixed results, indicating that differences between sites are at best slight. There is also a strong taxonomic separation between the fine and coarse size radiolarian fractions recovered during the sieving of each sample. The siliceous sponge spicule assemblages from these faunas show an inverse diversity relationship to the radiolarians in that Snowblind Creek contains greater alpha diversity than Twilight Creek. This study provides the first documentation of facies-controls in Silurian radiolarian diversity and is useful in evaluating the role of taxa used in biostratigraphy.

Description: The Taidon and Fomin formations of the Kuznetsk Basin (SW Siberia, Russia) were sampled in three sections, Old Belovo quarry, Artyshta village and Starobachaty village. The carbonate beds revealed microfacies of bioclastic wackestone and packstone, deposited in the distal parts of inner ramps and the proximal parts of mid ramps. Relatively rare plurilocular foraminifers occur in bioclastic neomicrosparitized wackestone deposited in the shallower parts of the carbonate ramp. The other microfacies only contain the bilocular foraminifer genus Earlandia . The plurilocular foraminifers permit the dating of the lower part of the Taidon Formation and the distinction of a biozone characterized by Tuberendothyra , Pseudoplanoendothyra , and Granuliferella . This local biozone can be correlated with the MFZ4 reference-biozone established in Belgium, which is late Hastarian (i.e., latest early Tournaisian) in age. Conodonts of the upper Siphonodella crenulata Zone in the lower part of Taidon Formation are consistent with this late Hastarian age. The Fomin Formation cannot be directly dated by its foraminifers Earlandia . As it is overlain by previously dated lower Visean beds, the Fomin Formation corresponds to all or part of the entire Ivorian (i.e., late Tournaisian) and of the MFZ5 to MFZ8 biozones. The same uncertainty on the late Tournaisian age exists with the conodonts, which belong to the lower Siphonodella crenulata Zone and isosticha -upper crenulata / typicus/anchoralislatus zones, respectively. As a taxonomical result, Septabrunsiinoidea n. superfam. is introduced, in order to explain some poorly known lineages of the Tournaisian. Palaeobiogeographically, SW Siberia is proposed as the radiation centre of the Septabrunsiinoidea during the Tournaisian, and especially during the Hastarian, and their migration centre toward three directions: North America, South China and western Tethyan areas.
