Notes: The histopathology of biliary hyperplasia and renal calcinosis, associated with infections of two parasites, Myxidium incurvatum and Rhabdospora thelohani, is described in turbot, Scophthalmus maximus (L.), from Scottish marine fish farms and wild populations. Liver and kidney lesions were divided into four, and parasite infections into five grades of severity. A few of the fish examined were not parasitized, but every one showed some evidence of pathological change, even the apparently normal individuals from all populations. Although there is a positive association between the parasitic and pathological data, parasitism is not considered to be the principal cause of either the hepatic or renal lesion; the evidence suggests rather a secondary opportunist role for the parasites. The general severity of the condition in captive stocks suggests that the cause may lie in the fundamentals of present techniques of turbot husbandry, but no specific agent has been identified. A case is put forward for considering Rhabdospora to be a parasite rather than a specialized host cell.

Notes: One tank of plaice in the W.F.A. Fish Cultivation Unit at Hunterston, known to habour an infection with the microsporidian Glugea stephani, was sampled over a 2 year period and showed a mean level of infection of 49.4 % with an apparent trend towards a decrease. Experimental oral transmission was achieved, without the use of intermediate or carrier hosts, and the dependence of G. stephani on high temperatures was demonstrated. Most fish were able to tolerate the infection, but some mortalities in young fish were attributed to the parasite, particularly in the 2 months following the experimental infection. The parasite in the fish farm is believed to have been introduced with plaice stocks imported from more southern waters.

Notes: Variations in the occurrence of gastrointestinal metazoan parasites in flatfish were examined in relation to sewage sludge dumping at an ‘accumulating’ and two ‘dispersing’ dump sites in Scottish coastal waters. The gross disturbance of the benthic communities at the Garroch Head disposal site in the Firth of Clyde and absence of the intermediate hosts of particular parasites was not reflected in the parasite fauna of the long rough dab, Hippoglossoides platessoides. Results indicate that this flatfish host is highly mobile and intermixing within the population masked any localized effects of sludge dumping on parasite transmission at the dump site. The common dab, Limanda limanda, is considered to be relatively static at the St Abb's Head and Bell Rock disposal sites off the Firth of Forth where no evidence of effects of sewage sludge dumping on its metazoan parasite fauna was detected. This is consistent with the results of chemical and biological monitoring of the sites. The value of a parasite-based index of the biological effects of sewage sludge dumping is discussed.

Notes: From data gathered during disease monitoring surveys in the North Sea during 1989 and 1990, a previously undescribed lipoma of common dab (Limanda limanda) is reported. Single, and multifocal circular, yellow lesions on the ventral surface were indicative of this hypodermal lipoma which predominated in mature female dab. No positive correlation could be found between the lipoma and the practice of sewage sludge dumping or oil field activities.

Notes: Abstract Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) has been described in cultivated rainbow trout but major outbreaks have not been recognized in other fish species. This paper describes light and electron microscope studies and presents epidemiological data of a disease condition in first summer Salmo salar parr and S. trutta, which is associated with an organism apparently identical to the aetiological agent of PKD. The pathology was found to be similar to that described for PKD in rainbow trout. The epidemiology in the brown trout suggests that exposure after May does not result in infection. The data from the outbreaks in two salmon hatcheries appear complex and suggest different susceptibilities to PKD among salmon originating from different sources.

Notes: Abstract. An outbreak of Dermocystidium infection in cultured eels, Anguilla anguilla L., from Scotland is described. The disease appeared in the winter months but did not cause significant mortalities or adversely affect the growth of the eels. Infected eels had large, elongate white cysts on the gills. The cysts consisted of a homogeneous layer of parasite origin surrounded by a fibrous capsule and hyper-plastic epithelium. Within the cysts were small spherical parasite cells with a densely staining central area and peripheral granular, vacuolated cytoplasm. The cell wall appeared to be broken down in many cases and the cells appeared degenerate. The cysts eventually collapsed and the cavity was filled with epidermal tissue.

Notes: Abstract. The distribution and prevalence of common dab, Limanda limanda L., affected with X-cell lesions was investigated at various localities around the British Isles. Extreme variability in the prevalence of affected gills was recorded in the Moray Firth (NE Scotland), where samples obtained from hauls taken in close proximity ranged from nil to 60% of the collected dab. The condition was not detected in dab from the Irish Sea, and was found only sporadically in samples in the southern North Sea and the northwest coast of Scotland, Areas of high prevalence are typically coastal or relatively shallow habitats. The patchy distribution of the disease throughout dab populations suggests that an infectious agent may be involved in its aetiology. A method is described for rapid, accurate screening of fish samples for X-cell disease, which utilizes the autofluorescence of the X-cell. Ultrastructural studies of lesions from external and internal organs in dab disclosed some previously undescribed features of X-cells. Stages of the X-cell development which occurred in‘nests', and possibly preceded the commonly found X-cells, were found in gill lesions. Electron dense inclusions found in X-cells in the spleen and kidney were rod- or dumbbell-shaped structures and possibly represented secretory granules.
