Notes: Abstract Multiple block coded modulations (MBCM) are studied. One characteristic of the studied MBCM schemes is that they have both a block and a trellis structure. A general rule for deriving branch variables so as to establish a decoding trellis is presented. Examples of MBCM schemes employing 8‐PSK and 16‐PSK constellations are given. Two different methods using these schemes are proposed for producing unequal error protection. Computer simulations are done to show the UEP ability.

Notes: Abstract A two-symbols/branch scheme of multiple block coded modulation (MBCM) is investigated under fading channels. Compared with a conventional scheme of block coded modulation (BCM), this two-symbols/branch MBCM scheme greatly increases the minimum squared Euclidean distance (MSED), minimum symbol distance (MSD), and minimum product distance (MPD). These three distances determine the bit-error-rate (BER) performance under either Gaussian or fading channels. A pilot symbol assisted fading compensation, as well as the techniques of symbol interleaving and branch weighting, are employed to combat the effect of channel fading. Through computer simulations, it is shown that large coding gains are obtained under both Rayleigh and Rician fading channels.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses a class of M/M/1 queueing models in which the service time of a customer depends on the number of customers served in the current busy period. It is particularly suited for applications in which the server has kind of learning ability and warms up gradually. We present a simple and computationally tractable scheme which recursively determines the stationary probabilities of the queue length. Other performance measures such as the Laplace transform of the busy period are also obtained. For the firstN exceptional services model which can be considered as a special case of our model, we derive a closed-formula for the generating function of the stationary queue length distribution. Numerical examples are also provided.

Notes: Abstract Consider a Markov-modulated G/G/1 queueing system in which the arrival and the service mechanisms are controlled by an underlying Markov chain. The classical approaches to the waiting time of this type of queueing system have severe computational difficulties. In this paper, we develop a numerical algorithm to calculate the moments of the waiting time based on Gong and Hu's idea. Our numerical results show that the algorithm is powerful. A matrix recursive equation for the moments of the waiting time is also given under certain conditions.

Notes: Degradation of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) steels due to neutron irradiationembrittlement is directly related to safety and life of the nuclear power plant (NPP). In order toensure structural integrity and safe operation of NPP, surveillance programs are conducted tomonitor and predict the changes in RPV materials. Availability of irradiated specimen from RPV orirradiation of specimens under simulated conditions of RPV for conducting fracture toughness testsremains a major problem in surveillance programs. In order to resolve this problem, various methodsare adopted to experimentally simulate the effect of neutron irradiation on mechanical behavior ofRPV steels using electron irradiation, thermal aging, strain hardening, combined quenching andhardening and pre-straining combined with heat treatment. This paper presents a review of theexisting research on experimental simulation of neutron irradiation damage through variousmethodologies and discusses the future scope of their application in plant safety and life assessmentof RPV’s

Notes: The effect of heat treatment on mechanical prosperities of Mg65Cu25Gd10 glass has beenstudied in this paper. The thermal stability and the structure of as-spun and heat treated Mg65Cu25Gd10alloys were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD).The compression tests were performed using a computer controlled tensile test machine. ExtendedX-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) was applied to study the structural changes ofMg65Cu25Gd10 glass during annealing. Results showed that the decline of mechanical properties forMg65Cu25Gd10 glass after annealing was closely related to the changes in local environment of Cuatoms and appearance of crystalline phases, and not the Gd local structure

Notes: A study was conducted on 7055 Al alloys processed by Equal-channel Angular Pressing(ECAP). The quantitative information about precipitate size, distribution and volume fraction inECAPed samples was investigated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM). It is found that with the number of ECAP increasing, the quantitative informationabout volume fraction (fv), precipitate size (R), specific inner surface of particle-matrix (Sp), andintegrated intensity (Q0) all increased, indicating that ECAP enhanced the nucleation and growth ofprecipitates. The microhardness of samples after two passes of ECAP is higher than that of T6 treatedsamples even after 96 h at 120℃. The formation of fine grains, higher volume fraction of precipitates, together with strain hardening induced by severe deformation are the main factors leading to a highmicrohardness in ECAPed samples

Notes: The effects of Al, Zr additions on the microstructure and properties of a β matrixMg-Li-Al-Zr alloy of hot forged, cold rolled and heat- treated states have been systematically investigated. The tensile properties of the alloy was tested, and microstructure was studied by X-ray diffraction and SEM methods. The results showed that the addition of zirconium in the aluminum containing Mg-Li alloy was effective for grain refinement. The alloy containing zirconium of rolled state exhibited higher strength and satisfied ductility compared with the alloy without zirconium. The existence of zirconium in the alloy was mainly in the form of Al-Zr compounds of Al2ZrandAl3Zr. The reason for less age-hardening effect may be caused by the capture of aluminum by zirconium and as a consequent by the lake of aluminum in the matrix

Notes: Texture evolution in Mg-13wt%Li-X alloy cold-rolled from 1.35 mm to 0.34 mm thicknesswas investigated, by obtaining pole figures and orientation distribution functions (ODFs). Punchingtests were conducted to reveal the effect of texture nature on formability. It was found that: (1) thetextures of the as-received sheet are characterized by α fiber texture, a γ fiber texture and a cubictexture in both cold-rolled and annealed conditions; (2) with thickness reduction though rolling, theintensity of the γ fiber texture continuously increases and finally the γ fiber texture connects into{111} tube texture, the texture of 〈11 0〉 orientation flows towards {223}〈11 0〉 along α fiber, thecubic texture of {001}〈100〉 turns into {035}〈100〉, while some grains concentrate at {011}〈41 1〉orientation; (3) good punching behavior of the cold-rolled sheet corresponds to the appearance of awell-developed γ fiber texture

Notes: In the present work Mg-Li-X alloys with different alloying are investigated and thestudies are focus on the stability of microstructures and properties of β base Mg-13Li-X alloys. The alloying elements concerned are aluminum, zinc, zirconium, rare earth. The microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties are examined with the aid of DSC analyses, X-ray diffraction and OM observation. The results showed that the hardening effect and the stability of the alloys varied with differentaddition of aluminum, zinc, zirconium, rare earth elements. The mechanical properties of the alloys greatly depend on the additional elements
