Notes: An intelligent supplier relationship management system (ISRMS) integrating a company's customer relationship management (CRM) system, supplier rating system (SRS) and product coding system (PCS) by the case based reasoning (CBR) technique to select preferred suppliers during the new product development (NPD) process is discussed. By using ISRMS in Honeywell Consumer Product (Hong Kong) Limited, it is found that the outsource cycle time from the searching of potential suppliers to the allocation of order, as well as the delay in delivery of goods of suppliers after order allocation, are greatly reduced. In addition, performance of suppliers can be monitored effectively.

Notes: The aspheric VCD lens is hard to fabricate by injection moulding due to its small volumeand high precision requirement. The processing conditions have critical effects on the quality of themoulded lenses. An optic lens needs precisely controlled surface contours, so determination of theprocessing conditions for lens moulding becomes very complicated. This study’s purpose is toinvestigate experimentally some effects of the moulding conditions on the form errors of injectionmoulded lens. An aspheric VCD lens was moulded using polymethyl methacrylate. Differentcombinations of moulding conditions were used focusing on moulding process parameters of theram speed, the mould temperature, the melt temperature and the packing pressure, The predictedmodel of form errors was formulated by orthogonal and regression analysis. Finally, the predictedmodel is proven to be valid based on the residual diagnostic plots

Notes: The formation of tool marks in single-point diamond turning is a fundamental study ofthe effect of materials swelling and recovery on surface roughness on a machined surface. A seriesof orthogonal face cutting tests has been conducted among plate aluminum alloy, oxygen-free highconductivity copper and electroless nickel phosphorus under the same cutting conditions by the useof facet tools with different front clearance angles. The results show that the regular width of theundulating pattern in tool marks could be explained by side swelling and the micro-waviness withina tool mark is caused by burnishing and recovery

Notes: This paper presents the inspection technology for a freeform surface component which isnamed F-theta lens. F-theta lens is widely used in laser scanners, printers, etc. Freeformcharacterization is one of the main approaches to verify the manufacturing precision of freeformsurface. At present, there is still a lack of techniques for the characterization of freeform surfaces. This study aimed to explore some approaches to inspect freeform surfaces. Two types ofmeasurement methods, namely contact and non-contact measurement methods, are employed tomeasure the F-theta lens surface. The pros and cons, the existing problems, different applicationsand areas for improvement of the two methods are discussed. A series of advanced measuringinstruments are used in the measurement process. A brief description of measurement mechanismsof these instruments is also presented. As a whole, this paper contributes to the development of theprecision measurement technology for optical freeform surfaces

Notes: Based on the analysis of characteristics of progressive lens, it can be found that lensuneven change of curvature is an important reason of defect on progressive lens processed bysingle-point diamond cutting technique. By applying least square fairing method to fair the surfacewhich is fitted and interpolated by Double Cubic B-Spline method, the curvature change ofprogressive surface becomes even. The processing experiment shows that the method in this papercan eliminate the defect effectively in the ultra-precision processing of progressive lenses

Notes: In this paper, a framework of surface generation model in the fast tool servo (FTS)machining of optical microstructures will be described. The integrated model is totally composed ofa tool path generator (TPG), a surface topography model (STM) and an optimization model (OM).To develop the tool path generator, two parts should be involved. The first part is the tool pathgenerated based on cutting conditions such as the feed rate and spindle speed, the geometry ofoptical microstructures, and diamond tool geometry. Another part is the synchronized motiongenerated by the tool actuation of the FTS at a bandwidth higher than the rotational frequency of thespindle. The surface topography model will be generated based on the TPG and used to predict thetechnological aspects of FTS machining. It takes into the account the kinematic and dynamiccharacteristics of the cutting process. The former includes the tool path generated by the tool pathgenerator. The later includes the relative vibration between the tool and the workpiece caused by theaxial error motion of the spindle as well as the synchronized motion of the FTS system. Theoptimization model will be undertaken by an iterative algorithm, which will be developed based onthe TPG and STM. The OM will be expected to output the verified tool path, the suggestedoptimum cutting conditions, and the diagrams with predicted cutting performance characteristic andprocess parameters being investigated. Eventually, the successful development of this surfacegeneration model can contribute for the knowledge of ultra-precision machining with FTS and thefurther development of the performance of the machining system

Notes: One of the remarkable achievements of nanotechnology is the ability to achievenanometric surface finishes in single-point diamond turning of high-precision components forcomplex optical surfaces. A better understanding of the surface generation mechanisms is of primeimportance for the development for the prediction of the surface roughness. This paper presents astudy of mechanisms of nano-surface generation in single-point diamond turning of various types ofmaterials

Notes: Optical freeform surface requires submicrometer form accuracy and nanometer surfacefinish. Ultra-precision raster milling is an emerging technology in the fabrication of those surfacesin which the dynamics factors are vital to achieve the surface quality. This paper presents atheoretical dynamics model for ultra-precision raster milling. The cutting force is derived in thedepth of cut (DOC) planes in the feed and raster directions. Hence, a 3D cutting force model isestablished. The cutting force induced deflection between tool and workpiece is determined whichcan be employed to analyze the influence of the deflection on the surface generation in rastermilling. The dynamic model is useful for modeling of surface generation and further control ofvibration between the tool and the workpiece

Notes: The influences of ultrasonic field to polishing performance of Polishing Based onCoupling Vibration of Liquid (PCVL) are analyzed here. The simulation results shows that soundfield in the original polishing device is rather uneven due to the existence of standing wave. Toobtain better polishing performance, the experimental equipment was modified. Uniformity of thesound field was improved by preventing standing wave, thus a better surface quality could beachieved. Furthermore, a higher machining efficiency could be also obtained because soundintensity was strengthened at the same time. From the results serials of experiments, theimprovements made by modified equipment are clearly shown

Notes: A strain gradient dependent crystal plasticity approach is adopted to model the size effectin the microforming process of sheet metal. To take into account the grain size effect in thesimulation, the total slip resistance in each active system was assumed to be due to a mixedpopulation of forest obstacles arising from both statistically stored and geometrically necessarydislocations. The non-local crystal plasticity has been established by directly incorporating theabove slip resistance into the conventional rate-dependent crystal plasticity and implemented intothe Abaqus/Standard FE platform by developing the user subroutine UMAT. The formulation hasbeen recapitulated and followed by presentation of the numerical examples employing both thelocal and non-local formulation. The comparison of the counterpart simulation results reveals thegrain size effect in the microforming process and demonstrates the availability of the codedeveloped
