    Notes: This research is aimed at quantitative genetic analysis of several avocado traits and cultivars. The experimental material consists of our avocado breeding project in which data were collected from several crosses as well as selfings of cultivars. Parenthood was determined by isozymes and the seedling progenies were assessed for eight traits. A biometrical genetic approach for analysis of this breeding project is presented. Genetic profiles of the traits and cultivars were detailed by several characteristics: level of heterozygosity and dominance deviation, dominance of alleles, dominance direction, general evaluation of additive and non-additive genetic variance, maternal inheritance, and allelic differences among the various cultivars in major genes controlling the same quantitative trait. Five avocado cultivars: ‘Fuerte’, ‘Hass’, ‘Ettinger’, ‘Tova’, and ‘Rosh-Hanikra’, were characterized separately for each trait. Practical conclusions for the breeder regarding economically important quantitative traits are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract. Four feeding trials with Israeli carp, Cyprinus carpio L., were performed in cages or in ponds in order to investigate responses to lysine supplementation of low protein carp feeds under different practical conditions. In each of the trials one of the basic conditions was different: fish size—small (80–125g) or large (560g); temperature—22°C or 26°C; density—cages or ponds. In each trial 2–3 ration sizes × 2–3 lysine levels were tested. A basal diet of 25% protein and 1·35% lysine served for all the trials.At low feeding levels, no responses to lysine supplements were found either at 22 ± 2°C or at 26 ± 2°C (0600 h) for all fish sizes. At higher feeding levels, at both temperatures, 0·5% lysine-HCl supplements to 1·7% total lysine yielded significant growth increases. Further supplements to 2·1% lysine (=8·4% of the protein) brought an additional response only from small fish of 90g in cages at the highest ration and temperature. In ponds at 26°C, the effects on small fish of 80g were smaller, probably due to available natural food. The reduction in lysine retention suggested that 1·7% lysine might have been adequate even at optimal conditions in ponds.

    Notes: Abstract The origin of avocado (Persea americana Mill) cultivars, as well as the genetic relationships between Persea species, are not well defined and are based mainly on morphological parameters. Minisatellite DNA markers were used to analyze 24 P. americana cultivars in an attempt to define their racial allocation. DNA mixes representing the three races were evaluated and used for analysis. The allocation of 19 of the above cultivars was substantiated by the DNA markers, while new suggestions were offered regarding the remaining five. Eight cultivars, of unknown racial origin, were also examined, and a phylogenetic tree suggesting their origin is offered. Selfing progeny of five cultivars were analyzed for six morphological traits which differentiate the three races, and were compared to their parents in order to assess their origin. Eleven Persea species were analyzed, using DNA fingerprint patterns and SSR (simple sequence repeat) alleles, in order to identify the genetic relationships among the Persea species, and between them and the three P. americana races. The phylogenetic tree obtained is presented. The high value of variation between the avocado cultivars and Persea species observed in this work, suggests that the validity of race and species definition within Persea be treated with caution.

    Notes: Abstract  An avocado genomic library was screened with various microsatellite repeats. (A/T)n and (TC/AG)n sequences were found to be the most frequent repeats. One hundred and seventy-two positive clones were sequenced successfully of which 113 were found to contain simple sequence repeats (SSR). Polymerase chain reaction primers were designed to the regions flanking the SSR in 62 clones. A GenBank search of avocado DNA sequences revealed 1 sequence containing a (CT)10 repeat. A total of 92 avocado-specific SSR markers were screened for polymorphism using 50 offspring of a cross between the avocado cultivars ‘Pinkerton’ and ‘Ettinger’. Both are standard avocado cultivars which are normally outcrossed and highly heterozygous. Fifty polymorphic SSR loci, 17 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) and 23 minisatellite DNA Fingerprint (DFP) bands were used to construct the avocado genetic map. The resulting data were analyzed with various mapping programs in order to assess which program best accommodated data from progeny of heterozygous parents. The analyses resulted in 12 linkage groups with 34 markers (25 SSRs, 3 RAPDs and 6 DFP bands) covering 352.6 cM. This initial map can serve as a basis for developing a detailed genomic map and for detection of linkage between markers and quantitative trait loci.

The growth regulators reviewed include auxins, gibberellins, cytokinins, ethephon, CCC, Alar, ABA, morphactin and TIBA. None of them is used routinely. The chlorophenoxy and naphthalene compounds are definitely harmful. All others discussed are worthy of further study.
