Notes: The implementation of frequency-dependent second hyperpolarizabilities is presented using the time-dependent (spin-)restricted open-shell Hartree–Fock (TDROHF) theory (ROHF cubic response theory). The expression for the ROHF cubic response function (frequency-dependent second hyperpolarizability) is derived based on the quasienergy derivative (QED) method. We present an application of the ROHF cubic response theory to the frequency-dependent second hyperpolarizabilities of ground states of open-shell atoms (which are in S states) [Li(2S), Na(2S), K(2S), and N(4So)] for various third-order optical processes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The calculations of frequency-dependent second hyperpolarizabilities for the (static) electric field induced second harmonic generation (ESHG) [γ(−2ω;ω,ω,0)] of the FH, H2O, CO, and NH3 molecules in the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) based on the quasienergy derivative (QED) method are performed by numerical differentiation of frequency-dependent first hyperpolarizabilities for the second harmonic generation (SHG) [β(−2ω;ω,ω)] with respect to static electric fields. The QED-MP2 values of the ESHG second hyperpolarizabilities γ(parallel)(−2ω;ω,ω,0) of the H2O, CO, and NH3 molecules show good agreement with the experimental values. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We perform the first calculations of frequency-dependent first hyperpolarizabilities in the second-order Møller–Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) as analytical third derivatives of the time-averaged MP2 quasienergy with respect to electric field strengths. The calculations of frequency-dependent first hyperpolarizabilities using the quasienergy derivative (QED) method-based MP2 (QED-MP2) response theory are presented for the electro-optic Pockels effect (EOPE) [β(−ω;ω,0)] and second harmonic generation (SHG) [β(−2ω;ω,ω)] of the FH, H2O, CO, and NH3 molecules. The QED-MP2 values of the SHG first hyperpolarizabilities β(parallel)(−2ω;ω,ω) for the H2O, CO, and NH3 molecules show good agreement with the experimental values. The QED-MP2 response theory is the simplest in ab initio methods for including dynamical electron correlation effects in dynamic response properties efficiently. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An aminoglycoside-modifying enzyme in arbekacin-resistant methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), exhibiting 4′′′-N-acetylation, was examined. Although the MRSA strain with AAC(4′′′) had no AAC(6′)-APH(2″) activity, a DNA fragment of the AAC(6′)-APH(2″) gene was amplified by PCR and the purified N-terminal 30-amino acid sequence of this AAC(4′′′) was identical to AAC(6′)-APH(2″). Direct DNA sequencing of this ‘silent’ AAC(6′)-APH(2″) gene revealed a single point mutation leading to a substitution of Gly for Asp80, through which the secondary structure is affected. A change in protein conformation could lead to a cleavage and a change of the enzymatic activity. We propose a new aminoglycoside-resistance mediated by AAC(4′′′) is caused by a mutation-modified AAC(6′)-APH(2″).

Notes: Abstract A lidar network system consisting of two Mie scattering lidars and one differential absorption lidar was developed to measure the atmospheric environment in Jakarta. The three lidars were installed at three locations in Jakarta to study atmospheric boundary layer structure and transportation of atmospheric pollutants. The Mie scattering lidars employ compact flashlamp pumped Nd:YAG lasers operated at 1064 nm fundamental. They are installed in shelters and directed vertically. One of the Mie lidar has a rotating wedged window for scanning conically to measure wind velocity using a correlation method. The DIAL system employs two Nd:YAG laser-pumped optical parametric oscillators. The DIAL is designed to measure distribution of ozone and SO2 in the near UV region, and NO2 in the 450-nm region. The system is installed in a shelter and has a full scanning capability.

Notes: Abstract Laser-diode pumped passively Q-switched single-frequency Nd:YAG laser has been demonstrated with a Cr4+:YAG crystal as the saturable absorber. When pumped with a fiber-coupled CW laser diode, the laser produces pulses of 1.4-20.9 ns duration, with a repetition rate of 1.9-52.0 kHz. The highest peak power of 17.6 kW was obtained at an incident pump power of 1.8 W. The use of a Cr4+:YAG saturable absorber enables the laser to operate not only in a single-frequency mode but also linearly polarized. The mode selection mechanism is discussed.

Notes: Abstract A new incoherent Doppler lidar scheme is proposed using a high resolution Mach-Zehnder interferometer discriminator with sinusoidal transmission functions. A two-channel differential discrimination technique is developed which provides high sensitive velocity measurement. The aerosol and molecular backscatter signals can be separately measured and the backscatter ratio obtained. Principle of the measurement is described and the characteristics of this technique are analyzed and compared. Numerical calculation for a moderate size 1.064 μ lidar shows that an accuracy better than 1 m/s for the velocity measurement and 18% for the backscatter ratio measurement can be obtained up to a height of 10 km by a 500 shot average.

Notes: Abstract A new method of simultaneous remote sensing of atmospheric wind and temperature by a ultraviolet Rayleigh lidar is described. This technique uses two narrowband filters located at either side of the wings of the Rayleigh backscatter spectrum to analyze Rayleigh backscattering signals. These filters are selected to be greatly sensitive to both velocity and temperature. By measuring the ratio and the sum of the two normalized filtered signals, the line-of-sight wind velocity and temperature profiles can be retrieved. A lidar system is proposed for the wind velocity and temperature measurements in the middle atmosphere, and the simulation results show that the accuracies of velocity and temperature are about 1 m/s and 2 K at the height of 30 km, respectively. The influence of aerosol component has been estimated for clear weather conditions, and with an uncertainty of aerosol component of 15% the errors are about 0.1 m/s and 2 K above the troposphere, respectively.
