Description: Review of the Skylab student project conceived to stimulate interest in science and technology by directly involving students in a major research program. Under this project, over 4000 students, ranging in age from 11 to 19 years, submitted proposals from which 301 regional winners and, then, 25 national winners were selected on the basis of their scientific and technical merits. Descriptions are presented of the proposal of these 25 national winners.

Description: Skylab is an experimental manned space station scheduled to be placed into orbit in 1973. The Skylab system is to provide support for occupancy by a three-man crew for a total of up to five months. After an extensive study of various means by which rescue capability could be provided for Skylab, a plan was devised that provides coverage for those situations which are the most likely to arise. Rescue mission requirements are discussed together with a response-time analysis and the rescue vehicle configuration. The time-to-rescue will vary from 48 to 10 days, depending on the launch-readiness state at the time of a mission emergency.

Description: Attention is given to the reliability controls in manned spacecraft programs, taking into account the project Mercury, the Gemini program, the Apollo program, the Skylab program, and the Apollo-Soyuz test project. Reliability controls used in these programs are related to reliability management, parts and materials control, failure mode and effects analysis, reliability quantitative analysis, problem reporting and corrective action control, test control, limited-life control, and milestone reviews. A summary is presented of the major reliability tasks and innovations being used on the Space Shuttle program. Examples of these innovations include improved management techniques and an early identification of specific certification tests.

Description: Procedural and organizational guidelines used in accordance with NASA safety policy for the Skylab missions are outlined. The basic areas examined in the safety program for Skylab were the crew interface, extra-vehicular activity (EVA), energy sources, spacecraft interface, and hardware complexity. Fire prevention was a primary goal, with firefighting as backup. Studies of the vectorcardiogram and sleep monitoring experiments exemplify special efforts to prevent fire and shock. The final fire control study included material review, fire detection capability, and fire extinguishing capability. Contractors had major responsibility for system safety. Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and equipment criticality categories are outlined. Redundancy was provided on systems that were critical to crew survival (category I). The five key checkpoints in Skylab hardware development are explained. Skylab rescue capability was demonstrated by preparations to rescue the Skylab 3 crew after their spacecraft developed attitude control problems.
