    Notes: Nb3Si in the Cr3Si (A15) structure has been successfully recovered in bulk amounts after shock compressing Nb3Si in the Ti3P structure. The material was under compression less than 1 μs. To account for the extreme rapidity of the transformation we find that the essential characteristics of the Cr3Si structure can be achieved by screw rotating one type of column of Nb-atom pairs 45° and one quarter cell length in the Ti3P structure. It is further shown that the Fe3P structure cannot be similarly transformed.

    Notes: Summary This paper describes the construction and use of a washing/incubation chamber that may be used for peroxidase-antiperoxidase immunocytochemistry of vibratome sections. The advantages of the chamber include: all sections are processed simultaneously with exception of exposure to the primary antiserum; the exposure of the sections to DAB substrate can be precisely controlled; and also the sections are not directly manipulated during the procedure resulting in a much greater integrity of the tissue. Use of the chamber reduces the amount of labor normally required to wash the sections thorughout the procedure. Application of this system to the development and standardization of quantitative immunocytochemical techniques is also discussed.

    Notes: Summary Utilizing the unlabeled antibody enzyme method, we report the distribution of hypothalamic elements immunoreactive with antibodies to luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) in the rat. Immunostained elements, resembling neural processes, were distributed along a pathway corresponding to the tuberoinfundibular tract which appeared to terminate near vascular elements in the external layer of the preand post-infundibular median eminence. No cell bodies stained specifically for LH-RH. Similar topographic arrangements were noted (in coronal and sagittal sections) in diestrous females, ovariectomized females and a hypophysectomized male. The same results were obtained with three different preparations of antisera to LH-RH. Our studies agree with those of other investigators using immunohistochemical techniques as well as with localization studies of LH-RH in the hypothalamus using bioassay and radioimmunoassay. Our results suggest that the unlabeled antibody enzyme technique will have unique value for identifying and tracing fiber systems related to specific functions within the hypothalamus.

    Notes: Summary Changes in subcellular structures of arcuate neurons correlated in a consistent way with stages of the estrous cycle of the rat. Associated with the rough endoplasmic reticulum short ribbons of moderately electron dense material appeared at metestrus and circular or elliptical bodies termed “ribbon-rolls” at diestrus and proestrus. Although present in proestrus, the ribbon-rolls were smaller at this stage. In a few neurons in diestrous females and in ovariectomized animals one to seven months before perfusion multiple large ribbon-rolls occupied much of the cytoplasm. Also, frequency of dense granules and lysosomes increased in diestrus. The significance of the ribbon-rolls and changes in other structures during the estrous cycle are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We have performed resistance measurements on thin films of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) in applied magnetic fields to above 200 T (2 MegaOersted) at temperatures as low as 2.5 K. The fields are produced by an explosively driven flux-compression system. We can see a particularly clear onset, without replotting the data, of the “hydrodynamic” flow of vortices probably because of the very fast increasing field. The low-temperature “critical field” for the field parallel to the c-axis of the sample is 135 T. Our data in the other direction are still preliminary. We discuss possible interpretation of our results.

    Notes: Summary 1. The decapeptide lueteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) is synthesized in neuronal cell bodies diffusely distributed across the basal forebrain and is secreted from neuronal terminals in the median eminence. Once secreted, LHRH enters the portal vessels and is then transported to the anterior pituitary, where it modulates the synthesis and secretion of gonadotropins, which are essential to gonadal function and reproduction. 2. Because of the difficulties encountered in studying these diffusely distributed neurons, we have developed strategies which combine immunocytochemistry and computer-assisted techniques to examine individual LHRH neuronal cell bodies, as well as the entire population of LHRH neurons from the diagonal band of Broca to the mammillary bodies. In addition, we have examined LHRH neuronal terminals in the median eminence using computer-assisted imaging techniques to examine individual terminals by electron microscopy or across all rostral-caudal regions of the median eminence by light microscopy. In our most recent studies using confocal microscopy, we have examined the relationships of LHRH terminals to glial processes. 3. These studies reveal a very dynamic system of LHRH neuronal cell bodies and terminals. The population of neurons in which LHRH can be detected varies as a function of time after gonadectomy, during the estrous cycle, and during the preovulatory surge of LH during the afternoon of proestrus. Dynamic changes are also observed in LHRH terminals in the median eminence as a function of time after gonadectomy and in specific rostral-caudal regions of the median eminence during the preovulatory surge of LH. Finally, confocal microscopy reveals that LHRH terminals are prevented from contacting the basal lamina of the brain by glial end-feet. 4. We are currently examining the hypothesis that these relationships change as a function of endocrine milieu and, therefore, participate in the modulation of LHRH secretion. Ongoing studies focus on defining the sites of action and synergy of multiple sources of regulation of LHRH secretion and their relative importance to ensuring reproductive success.

    Notes: Abstract Observations of internal gravity waves in the stably-stratified atmospheric boundary layer at Halley, Antarctica are presented. These were made on 1 February, 1986 and take the form of temperature measurements from a 30 m mast and a Sodar record. The temperature record shows a clearly defined, dominant wave period of around 11 min. A high-resolution radiosonde ascent made during the period of wave activity exhibits thin layers of low Richardson number and it is suggested that these are regions of dynamic instability where the waves are generated. A linear stability analysis of the radiosonde data supports this idea. It is argued from simple theoretical ideas and by means of a numerical model that only waves with a wavelength greater than a certain critical value are likely to be observed at the surface. The observations are shown to be consistent with this hypothesis.

    Notes: Abstract We present eddy-correlation measurements of heat and water vapour fluxes made during the Antarctic winter. The surface layer was stably stratified throughout the period of observation and sensible heat fluxes were always directed downwards. However, both upward and downward water vapour fluxes were observed. Their magnitude was generally small and the latent heat flux was not a significant fraction of the surface energy budget. The variation of heat and water vapour fluxes with stability is well described by Monin-Obukhov similarity theory but the scalar roughness lengths for heat and water vapour appear to be much larger than the momentum roughness length. Possible explanations of this effect are discussed.
