    Description: The Crostolo River section in Italy yielded a detailed record of the Upper Olduvai geomagnetic polarity transition that has been used to support the hypothesis of deep mantle control on the transitional geomagnetic field. The paleomagnetic record is carried by the authigenic iron sulphide, greigite, which was interpreted to have formed shortly after deposition. Our detailed scanning electron microscope investigations indicate the presence of at least 3 generations of pyrite, which usually forms with greigite as a precursor. This suggests that the total magnetization is a complex composite that produced a smoothed record of transitional field behaviour.

    Description: The biomarker compositions of iron sulfide nodules (ISNs; upper Pliocene Valle Ricca section near Rome, Italy) that contain the ferrimagnetic mineral greigite (Fe3S4) were examined. In addition to the presence of specific terrestrial and marine biomarkers, consistent with formation in coastal marine sediments, these ISNs contain compounds thought to originate from sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). These compounds include a variety of low-molecular-weight and branched alkanols and several non-isoprenoidal dialkyl glycerol diethers (DGDs). In addition, archaeal biomarkers, including archaeol, macrocyclic isoprenoidal DGDs and isoprenoidal glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers are also present. Both SRB and archaeal lipid d13C values are depleted in 13C (d13C values are typically less than 50‰), which suggests that the SRB and archaea consumed 13C depleted methane. These biomarker and isotopic signatures are similar to those found in cold seeps and marine sediments where anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) occurs with sulfate serving as the terminal electron acceptor. Association of AOM with formation of greigite-containing ISNs could provide an explanation for documented remagnetization of the Valle Ricca sediments. Upward migration of methane, subsequent AOM and associated authigenic greigite formation are widespread processes in the geological record that have considerable potential to compromise paleomagnetic records. 2007 Elsevier Ltd.     Notes: The neutral and charged species emitted by pulsed-laser irradiation of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) at 248 nm in vacuum have been examined. In particular, the species and properties of the emission products produced at typical fluence regimes used in the pulsed-laser deposition of PTFE thin films have been characterized. The relative intensities of the major products as well as their dependence on laser fluence are presented, and a simple model is used to fit the observed fluence dependence. Evidence that the major neutral component, the monomer (C2F4), is formed from a thermally activated unzipping reaction is presented. The ionic species are derived from the neutral decomposition products, apparently ionized by electron collisions in the weak plasma generated at the target surface.

    Notes: The important role of confined longitudinal optical (LO) and surface optical (SO) phonons is investigated for different types of individual scattering processes in AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wires. Electron wave function tailing due to finite barrier height has been properly taken into account. We demonstrate that for highly confined wires structures Ly=Lz=40 A(ring), forward and backward scattering are dominated by SO phonons. For 80 A(ring)×80 A(ring) structures, forward scattering is still predominately by SO phonons while backward scattering is dominated by confined LO phonons. Finally, for 150 A(ring)×150 A(ring), confined phonons control both forward and backward scattering. However, we demonstrate that confined LO phonons play a dominant role in intersubband transitions even in highly confined structures, and that it has the most significant effect on the backward scattering in quantum wires of Ly=Lz(approximately-greater-than)80 A(ring).

    Notes: A new three dimensional model is set up for interpreting the magnetostrictive "jumps'' in Terfenol-D compressed along the [112¯] or magnetically heat treated perpendicular to the [112¯]. This model considers the combined effects of magnetic anisotropy, stress, and magnetic field. It assumes no domain interaction and separates the magnetizing process of such Terfenol into three steps: (a) 180° domain wall movements at low applied H; (b) three dimensional domain rotations at high H; (c) non-180° domain wall movements at higher H. The magnetostrictions along the three orthogonal directions of [111], [112¯], and [11¯0] in Terfenol Tb0.3Dy0.7Fe1.9 compressed along the [112¯] are calculated. The ratios of these to the saturated [111] magnetostriction of single crystalline Terfenol are 0, 0, 0 at the end of (a); −4/3, 5/6, 1/2 at the end of (b); −4/3, 4/3, 0 at the near end of (c), respectively. These data are consistent with our measurements and others.1

    Notes: We report on the calculation of the total scattering rate in finite barrier GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wires based on the interaction Hamiltonian of confined longitudinal optical (LO) phonon and surface (SO) phonon modes. With multisubband processes being properly taken into account, our calculation indicates that for GaAs type of phonons the high-frequency symmetric (s+) branch plays an important role among all the other SO phonon branches; it can even dominate over confined LO phonons in highly confined quantum wires as observed by K. W. Kim, M. A. Stroscio, A. Bhatt, R. Mickevicius, and V. V. Mitin [J. Appl. Phys. 70, 319 (1991)]. Our results also demonstrate that the total contributions of confined LO and SO phonon scattering resemble closely to GaAs bulk LO phonon scattering. Selection rules between intersubband transitions for SO modes suggest the possibility of a bottle-neck effect for carrier relaxation in square wires compared with rectangular wires.

    Notes: Self-assembled InAs quantum dots are fabricated on a GaAs substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. The dots are covered by several monolayers of In0.2Ga0.8As before a GaAs cap layer and an in situ postgrowth annealing is performed to tune the emission to higher energy. The temperature dependence of photoluminescence from this structure demonstrates a slower redshift rate of the peak position, a gradual broadening of the linewidth and an abnormal enhancement of integrated intensity as the temperature is increased from 15 to 300 K. These phenomena are closely related to the introduction of an InGaAs layer and to the intermixing of In and Ga atoms during annealing. We propose a model to explain the unusual increase in PL intensity, which fits the experimental data well. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new configuration of a virtual cathode oscillator is proposed for high-power microwave generation. Analysis and simulation are carried out to investigate the characteristics of this configuration. In the numerical simulation, the microwave output power of ∼564 MW is obtained with an electron beam of 300 keV in electron energy and 15 kA in beam current, giving a beam-to-microwave efficiency of ∼12.5%. The significant features of the new configuration are (1) the microwave output power is not affected by an electron energy spread up to 6%; and (2) no significant change of the oscillation frequency is observed when the beam current changes from 10 to 20 kA. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
