Notes: Diet choice by three-spined sticklebacks was investigated under both laboratory and field conditions. In the laboratory, sticklebacks did not always choose the more profitable of two prey items; instead, they apparently selected prey according to a set of proximate decision rules based on visual cues provided by the prey. Studies of the diet of sticklebacks in the field suggest that they may use the same set of proximate decision rules to select their food and that in these more complex conditions this may lead them to feed preferentially on the more profitable types of prey. In general, sticklebacks selected zooplanktonic rather than benthic prey (which is less profitable), but the importance of benthos in the diet increased as the density of zooplankton decreased.

Notes: The possibility that efficiency of feeding on different prey in three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) increases by experience of such items was investigated experimentally by comparing sticklebacks reared with only non-moving prey (frozen brine shrimps) with sticklebacks caught in the wild from localities where a wide range of prey species was available. Fish without experience of natural food scored less well than those from the wild on various components of foraging and so had reduced feeding efficiency. However, feeding efficiency in naive fish improved after just a few days of experience with natural prey. Such experience-induced changes in foraging efficiency will alter the profitability of prey items for individual fish.

Notes: Summary Boulti fish (Tilapia nilotica Linn.) from Naser's lake in Aswan was converted to a ready marketable product (paste) in aluminium tubes. The quality of the product was ascertained by chemical indices. The product has a good flavour and can be kept for 5 weeks without undesirable changes. It is concluded that the production of fish paste in aluminium tubes is one of the possibilities of converting fish to precooked product.

Notes: Summary Total viable bacterial count reached 109 per gram of raw fish. It was decreased to 107 in fish paste and increased to 108–109 after storage at 2–4 °C for 5 weeks. It was observed that fish paste showed higher counts when preserved in polyethylene bags than in alimunium tubes.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A study was made for the occurrence of coliform and streptococcal groups on the skin surface (32 samples), gills (32 samples), intestinal tract (4 samples) and raw fish flesh (4 samples) and raw fish flesh (4 samples) of Boulti fish (Tilapia nilotica Linn.), a fresh water fish caught from Nasser's Lake in Aswan. Streptococcus group was detected in 13 samples taken from fish surface, 12 samples out of 32 swabs from gills. All intestine samples and raw fish flesh were positive for the streptococcus group. Coliform organisms were detected at nearly 43 % of skin or gill samples, 100 % of intestine and raw fish flesh samples.

Notes: Abstract The influence of chloroacetic acid amide (AC) on the temperature-dependence of the electrical conductivity (σ), thermal expansion (αij) and specific heat ((C p) of triglycine sulphate crystals was studied in the phase transition range (T c=49°). The addition of isostructural AC increased the electrical conductivity, decreased the thermal expansion and changed theC p peak. The mechanism is discussed on a thermodynamic basis.

Description: The enhancement of properties of elastomeric composite materials is very much dependent on the size and the surface modification of the reinforcing filler inclusions. It is well accepted that the reinforcement effects are primarily due to molecular interactions of the polymeric matrix and the filler inclusions and it involves both chemical and physical interactions. In the present study, we have incorporated silica nano fillers (Stober silica) into poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomeric networks. The dielectric properties of the networks were investigated as a function of filler nano filler size, volume fraction, and surface treatment by hexamethyldisilazane. The broad-spectrum dielectric properties (in particular, the dielectric constant, the dielectric loss, and tan δ) were characterized. These properties were found to be dependent on the size of the nano inclusions; thus, the results clearly showed a nano size phenomenon that was a highlight of the present research....

Description: Elastomeric materials require the incorporation of reinforcing fillers in order to improve their mechanical properties. The enhancement of properties is very much dependent on the size and any surface modification of the reinforcing agent. It is widely accepted that the reinforcement effects are primarily due to molecular interactions of the polymeric matrix and the filler inclusions and it involves both chemical and physical interactions. Herein, we have incorporated silica nano fillers (Stober silica) into poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomeric networks. The mechanical and swelling properties of the networks were investigated as a function of filler sizes (50, 130, and 170 nm), volume fraction of the filler inclusions, and surface treatment of the particles by were analyzed to give the Mooney-Rivlin constants 2C 1 and 2C 2 . These properties were found to be dependent on the size of the nano inclusions. Thus, a nano size phenomenon had been discerned and...
