Polymers with glutarimide-units have been prepared by an intramolecular cyclisation by heating of methacrylonitrile-methacrylic-acid-copolymers. The progress of the reaction has been determined by measuring the IR-spectra, the modulus in torsion and the increase of heat resistance. The formation of glutaric anhydride groups in addition to imide groups could be avoided by addition of urea before heating. The mechanical properties of the imid containing polymers as sheets, films and foams have been measured.

Durch Erhitzen von Methacrylnitril/Methacrylsäure-Copolymeren wurden durch intramolekulare Cyclisierung Polymere mit Glutarimideinheiten hergestellt. Der Reaktionsverlauf wurde mit Hilfe der IR-Spektren, des Schubmoduls und des Anstiegs der Wämeformbeständigkeit verfolgt. Die Bildung von Glutarsäureanhydridgruppen neben Imidgruppen konnte durch Zusatz von Harnstoff vor dem Erhitzen vermieden werden. Die mechanischen Eigenschaften der imidhaltigen Polymere in Form von Platten, Filmen und Schaumstoffen wurden bestimmt.
