    Notizen: : This paper presents hydrological characteristics of the streamflow of the Dismal, Middle Loup, North Loup, and Cedar Rivers in the Nebraska Sand Hills and their relation to climate and ground water variation. Time series of streamflow, precipitation, temperature, and ground water levels from 1976 to 1998 were used to analyze trends and fluctuations of streamflow and to determine relationships among streamflow, climate, and the ground water system. An increase of precipitation and a decrease of maximum temperature over the period resulted in higher ground water levels and increased streamflow in the region. The high permeability of the soil and the thick unsaturated zone enhance precipitation recharge, limit surface runoff, and prevent ground water losses through evapotranspiration. Thus, an abundance of ground water is stored, supplying more than 86 percent of streamflow in the four rivers. Streamflow is generally more constant in the Sand Hills than elsewhere in the region. The four rivers present different hydrologic characteristics because of the spatial heterogeneity in hydrogeologic conditions. Streamflow of the Dismal and Middle Rivers, which are less sensitive to climatic variation, is much steadier than that of the North Loup and Cedar Rivers.

    Notizen: Summary In this paper, analytic solutions of the nonhydrostatic and hydrostatic forms of Long's model were obtained under two different sets of vertical boundary conditions: The first uses a sumusoidal obstacle at the lower boundary and a rigid-lid top for the upper boundary. The second set applies an isolated obstacle of the “Witch of Agnesi” type at the lower boundary, while still using a rigid lid at the top. Following the solution evaluations, comparisons between the nonhydrostatic and hydrostatic solutions were processed in order to describe several influences introduced by using the hydrostatic assumption in this model. Through comparisons we have found that, in the case of a sinusoidal lower boundary condition, the hydrostatic solution is obtained as the zero mode of the nonhydrostatic solution. The influence of the hydrostatic assumption on the model solution is trivial in this case. When an isolated lower boundary condition is applied, however, the solutions illustrate dramatic differences, showing the significance of the effect of hydrostatic assumption on this model's solutions. These effects vary considerably with the model parameters as well. The comparison results also reveal that the realization of the hydrostatic assumption in this model's solutions is accomplished through the vertical boundary conditions used in the model evaluations.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Eine diagnostische Analyse explosiver Zyklogenese im Lee der nordamerikanischen Rocky Mountains wird unter Verwendung synoptischer Radiosondendaten vorgestellt. Die Analysen wurden sowohl im isobaren als auch im isentropen Raum erstellt. In dieser Studie treten allgemeine Grundzüge explosiver Zyklogenese im Raume der Rocky Mountains und der europäischen Alpen auf, wovon einer während der Auslösungsphase der Zyklogenese auf der terrainmodifizierten, baroklinen Instabilität in der unteren Troposphäre und auf der raschen Intensivierung der Baroklinizität (starke Frontogenese) in den mittleren und oberen Luftschichten beruht. Während der explosiven Entwicklungsphase tragen sowohl die großräumige Wärmeadvektion, als auch die durch frontenskalige Vertikalbewegungen hervorgerufenen Wärmeeffekte im Lee des Gebirges im selben Sinn zum “spin-up” des niedertroposphärischen Vorticityfeldes durch den thermischen Vorticityeffekt bei. Wir untersuchten zusätzlich das Phänomen der Tropopausenfaltung. Wir postulieren, daß dieses. Phänomen mit rapider Polarfrontintensivierung und mit explosiver Zyklogenese in der Troposphäre gekoppelt ist.
    Notizen: Summary A diagnostic analysis of explosive cyclogenesis in the lee of the Rocky Mountains in North America is presented, using the routine synoptic sounding data. The analysis is performed in both isobaric and isentropic spaces. Through this study some common features of explosive cyclogenesis in both the lee of the Rocky Mountains and the lee of the Alps in Europe are revealed, one of which, during the triggering stage of cyclogenesis, is the terrainmodified baroclinic instability in the lower tropospheric levels and a rapid intensification of the baroclinicity of the air (intense frontogenesis) in the middle and upper levels. In the explosive developing stage both the large scale thermal advection and the thermal effect due to a frontal scale vertical motion in the lee contribute in the same way to the spin-up of the vorticity field in the lower levels through the thermal vorticity influence. We also exmined the tropopause folding phenomenon. We suggest that this phenomenon is related to the rapid polar front intensification and to the explosive cyclogenesis through the troposphere.

It was found that rotations wereInhomogeneous within the individual grains, the rotation angles of the parts close to the initialboundaries (BPs) were smaller than those remote from the boundaries (IPs), e.g. the deviation anglesbetween the BPs and the IPs were 5-6° in the grains with 〈001〉//RD orientation, leading to therotation along the α-fiber, while the deviation angles were 5-12° in the grains with 〈121〉//NDorientation rotating toward the β-fiber. These results demonstrated that the microstructures and localrotations of various parts within the rolled individual columnar grains were influenced by their initialorientations and boundaries

    Beschreibung: This is the second part of a three-part paper on North American climate in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) that evaluates the twentieth-century simulations of intraseasonal to multidecadal variability and teleconnections with North American climate. Overall, the multimodel ensemble does reasonably well at reproducing observed variability in several aspects, but it does less well at capturing observed teleconnections, with implications for future projections examined in part three of this paper. In terms of intraseasonal variability, almost half of the models examined can reproduce observed variability in the eastern Pacific and most models capture the midsummer drought over Central America. The multimodel mean replicates the density of traveling tropical synoptic-scale disturbances but with large spread among the models. On the other hand, the coarse resolution of the models means that tropical cyclone frequencies are underpredicted in the Atlantic and eastern North Pacific. The frequency and mean amplitude of ENSO are generally well reproduced, although teleconnections with North American climate are widely varying among models and only a few models can reproduce the east and central Pacific types of ENSO and connections with U.S. winter temperatures. The models capture the spatial pattern of Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) variability and its influence on continental temperature and West Coast precipitation but less well for the wintertime precipitation. The spatial representation of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) is reasonable, but the magnitude of SST anomalies and teleconnections are poorly reproduced. Multidecadal trends such as the warming hole over the central–southeastern United States and precipitation increases are not replicated by the models, suggesting that observed changes are linked to natural variability.

    Beschreibung: Mammalian intrinsic apoptosis requires activation of the initiator caspase-9, which then cleaves and activates the effector caspases to execute cell killing. The heptameric Apaf-1 apoptosome is indispensable for caspase-9 activation by together forming a holoenzyme. The molecular mechanism of caspase-9 activation remains largely enigmatic. Here, we report the cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of an apoptotic holoenzyme and structure-guided biochemical analyses. The caspase recruitment domains (CARDs) of Apaf-1 and caspase-9 assemble in two different ways: a 4:4 complex docks onto the central hub of the apoptosome, and a 2:1 complex binds the periphery of the central hub. The interface between the CARD complex and the central hub is required for caspase-9 activation within the holoenzyme. Unexpectedly, the CARD of free caspase-9 strongly inhibits its proteolytic activity. These structural and biochemical findings demonstrate that the apoptosome activates caspase-9 at least in part through sequestration of the inhibitory CARD domain.

    Beschreibung: Development of novel and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with well-modulated atomic and electronic structure remains a challenge. Compared to the well-known metal hydroxides or (oxyhydr)oxides with lamellar structure, delafossites (ABO2) are characterized by alternating layers of A cations and edge-sharing BO2octahedra, but are rarely used in OER due to their poor electron conductivity and intrinsic activity. Here, we propose a delafossite analog by mutation of metal oxyhydroxide and delafossite based on first-principles calculations. Modulation on the electronic structure due to distortion of the original crystal field of the BO2layers is calculated to enhance electron conductivity and catalytic activity. Inspired by the theoretical design, we have experimentally realized the delafossite analog by electrochemical self-reconstruction (ECSR).OperandoX-ray absorption spectroscopy and other experimental techniques reveal the formation of delafossite analog with Ag intercalated into bimetallic cobalt–iron (oxyhydr)oxide layers from a metastable precursor through amorphization. Benefitting from the featured local electronic and geometric structures, the delafossite analog shows superior OER activity, affording a current density of 10 mA⋅cm−2at an overpotential of 187 mV and an excellent stability (300 h) in alkaline conditions.
