    Notes: Abstract This paper reports the preliminary results of a pilot study investigating the nature of ‘problem-solving’ activity in technology classrooms. The research focuses on the relationship and potential mismatch between teachers' and children's agendas, aims, perceptions and beliefs concerning design and technology activities. A case study of an 11-week project was undertaken with four pupils aged 13. In-depth classroom observation and interviews allowed us to investigate the problem solving used in designing and making a kite, and the pupils' ‘application’ of the knowledge required. Our analysis charts the influence of the teacher's task structuring and interventions on the children's problem-solving behaviour. The results indicate that the design process is highly complex and not always communicated successfully by teachers. What children typically encounter in design and technology projects are different problems requiring different approaches according to the kind of task and the stage reached in its solution. The popular idea that ‘problem solving’ in technology denotes a holistic ‘design-and-make’ process is hence under challenge. Moreover, the assumed access and application of relevant bodies of knowledge from other contexts is highly problematic.

    Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the potential of Design and Technology (D&T) as an environment for collaborative problem solving. Peer collaboration is considered to be a valuable learning mechanism but has not generally been exploited by teachers or explored by researchers in this context. D&T is unique in involving procedural problem-solving activity where talk between peers relates to physical manipulation and feedback and both concrete models and graphical representations play an important mediating role. The role of teachers is central to our discussion, particularly their task structuring, agendas and pedagogic strategies for supporting learning through collaboration; these have been underplayed in much of the general research literature on collaboration. Our discussion works towards a framework for analysing collaborative problem-solving activity in D&T, building on sociocultural perspectives and deriving additional insights into pupils' social and cognitive strategies from the literature on classroom talk.

    Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with recent developments in the construction of intelligent tutoring systems. The authors have developed an adaptive computer tutor for arithmetic, called Shopping on Mars; this activity is unique in that it supports informal methods of calculation. It involves carrying out shopping transactions within the context of an adventure game. The program runs on an Archimedes 310 microcomputer and is aimed at 8-to12-year-olds. Its main purpose is to help children develop an extensive repertoire of informal techniques for performing arithmetic in various everyday situations, and in particular, to learn to formulate shortcuts to problem solving. The tutor keeps a chronological record of how far individuals have progressed and of their observed difficulties, and it provides immediate feedback. Finally, the activity provides a rich, cooperative learning experience; the computer tutor acts as an intelligent participant in activities involving pairs of children. We describe the rationale behind Shopping on Mars, the design of its interface and instructional architecture, our strategies for intervention, and the special description language-based on direct manipulation-that we have evolved for child-computer communication. The results of some preliminary field trials are presented. We conclude by discussing the role of our activity in the classroom and the contribution which intelligent computer-based activities in general might make to the teaching of primary mathematics.

    Description: This book presents a fresh approach to bridging the perceived gap between academic and classroom cultures. It describes a unique form of research partnership whereby Cambridge University academics and school teachers together grappled with and reformulated theory—through in-depth case studies analysing practice using interactive whiteboards in five subject areas. The inquiry exploited the collaborators’ complementary professional knowledge bases. Teachers’ voices are particularly audible in co-authored case study chapters. Outcomes included deeper insights into concepts of sociocultural learning theory and classroom dialogue, more analytical mindsets, sustained new practices and ways of working collegially.; Readership: The book will interest academic and teacher researchers, initial teacher educators, professional development leaders, mentors, plus practitioners interested in using interactive whiteboards and dialogic teaching. It explores widening approaches to collegial development to reach educators working in other contexts (with and without technology). This could involve intermediate theory building or shortcutting by sharing and adapting the outcomes—springboarding teachers’ further critique and professional learning.
