Notizen: Abstract Macrobenthic and meiobenthic communities of an area off the Belgian coast of the North Sea were studied from 1970 until 1975 at 74 stations. On the basis of both macro- and meiobenthos, three zones can be distinguished in the area. The coastal zone is characterized by the macrobenthicAbra alba community, corresponding to the meiobenthicMicroarthridion littorale — Halectinosoma herdmani community, and the open sea zone by the macrobenthicVenus gallina community and the meiobenthicLeptastacus laticaudatus — Paramesochra helgolandica community. In between is a transient zone where elements of both other zones mix. The distribution of these zones is governed by the hydrodynamical regime of the region, especially by the residual and tidal current system of the Southern Bight. Within the coastal zone, the composition of the community is influenced by pollution which especially affects the epibenthic detritus-feeders of the meiobenthos. The spatial stability of parameters describing community structure can be used for monitoring changes. Temporal characteristics of these parameters could not be investigated properly, but diversity seems to be much stabler than biomass.

Notizen: Abstract Coherent assemblages of marine benthic species have been recognized from the early twentieth century, and the classical papers of Petersen (1914, 1918) were based on studies of limited areas in the North Sea. In 1986, a synoptic survey of the North Sea north to 57°N was undertaken by a group of ten laboratories from seven North Sea countries. The results of this survey have recently been published (Heip et al., 1992a, b; Künitzer et al., 1992; Huys et al., 1992), and some of the results are summarized in this paper. The analysis of the macrofauna is based on slightly more than 700 taxa. In general, the North Sea macrofauna consists of northern species extending south to the northern margins of the Dogger Bank, and southern species extending north to the 100 m depth line. The central North Sea is an area of overlap of southern and northern species, especially around the 70 m depth contour. Consistent groupings of species are recognized that were summarized in seven faunal groupings. Macrofaunal body weight, density and diversity increase linearly towards the north. Macrofaunal biomass for the whole area averages 7 g adwt. m−2 and decreases from south to north. Distribution patterns and trends within the meiofauna were very different. Nematodes, which are the dominant taxon overall, are least abundant in the sandy sediments of the Southern Bight, then increase to a maximum around 53° 30′ N and slowly decrease again towards the north. Copepod density and diversity are highest in the Southern Bight, due to the presence of many interstitial species. A large number of species new to science were recorded by the North Sea Benthos Survey and about 1500 species are expected to occur. Copepods show very distinct assemblages according to water depth and sediment type. The contrasting patterns in latitudinal gradients of body weight and number of species of macro- and meiofauna can be only partially explained. Latitude and sediment characteristics, such as grain size and content in plant pigments, and water depth, determine part of the variance in species composition, density and biomass of the benthic fauna, but the patterns that are observed are different for different benthic groups, requiring careful consideration as to their use in biological monitoring procedures. Distributions are related to current patterns in the North Sea, annual temperature variations and availability of food. However, large parts of the variance in many parameters remain unexplained.

Notizen: Abstract The reproductive potential of two harpacticoid copepods, Tachidius discipes and Paronychocamptus nanus, as measured by the intrinsic rate of natural increase, r m, has been studied. The influence of temperature on all factors used in the calculation of r mhas been taken into account. Generation time, which has also been determined in a third species, Nitocra typica, is the single factor which is most affected by temperature and which has the most pronounced effect on r m. Values of the reproductive potential differ considerably according to temperature, and thus to the time of the year; during the spring bloom more than half the reproductive potential is realized.

Notizen: Abstract The large nematode Oncholaimus oxyuris Ditlevsen, 1911 is a dominant predator in a shallow polyhaline brackish-water pond in Belgium. The reproductive potential of this species was calculated as the intrinsic rate of natural increase r=1/D In pN e , in which D is the generation time, p is the percentage of females, and N e is the number of eggs per female. The generation time varies between 570 days at 5°C and 101 days at 25°C and is the main factor in the determination of r. The relationship between r and temperature is nearly linear and is given by r=0.0013 T−0.0042. The reproductive potential of O. oxyuris is much lower than would be predicted from body size; this and the dominance of males in the population, is discussed in the light of the evolution of stable predator-prey systems.

Notizen: Summary The ostracod Cyprideis torosa Jones 1850 is a dominant species in brackish water habitats. To assess its importance, growth and respiration were measured. The shells form an increasing part of total weight as the animals grow but there is no correlation between shell weight and soft parts weight in the adults, indicating that tissue growth is a continuous process in these ostracods. Respiration was measured at 20° C. The slope of the log-log regression of respiration on dry weight was 0.746, showing that Cyprideis torosa follows the general rule for this relationship. The respiration rate per unit biomass was 0.246 nl O2 μg-1 h-1, which is low but well within the range of observed meiobenthic respiration rates. The Q10, expressing the temperature dependence of respiration, was 2.15. The general validity of Price and Warwick's (1980) hypothesis relating Q10 to stability of food supply is questioned.

Notizen: Summary Aspects of the demography of Monhystera disjuncta were investigated at different temperatures (in agnotobiotic cultures) and in different feeding conditions (monoxenic cultures with different bacterial strains, and different densities in the feeding suspension with one strain). Embryonic development time, minimum generation time, egg deposition rate and adult longevity depend on temperature, quality and quantity of food offered. Body mass at maturity is an allometric function of food density. It is shown that a previously inferred selectivity in food uptake is an artifact of culture conditions. pH buffering and addition of sterols permit culture of the species on a wide variety of bacterial strains. M. disjuncta is less well adapted to take advantage of high food density than are nematodes from polysaprobic environments. The animals channel surplus energy intake into a larger body mass, without being able to increase their rate of population growth accordingly.

Notizen: Summary The ostracod Cyprideis torosa Jones, 1850 is a dominant species in the meiofauna of brackish water habitats. Its production in the field over a five-year period has been calculated using two production models. The first model uses the age-distribution of shells preserved in the sediment to assess the stage-specific mortality rates and the stage durations. The second model is the size-frequency model, modified for use with developmental stages instead of size-classes. Productions calculated with both methods agree very well. Their values are 9.7 and 9.2 g dwt·m−2·y−1 respectively. The yearly P/B-ratio is 2.7 or 2.6 y−1, production efficiency P/A is 0.38 or 0.37. The production efficiency of Cyprideis torosa nearly equals the mean efficiency of non-insect invertebrate detritivores. The species' conservative strategy and long generation time enables it to maintain a relatively high biomass with a fixed amount of food. These characteristics make it a superior competitor.

Notizen: Abstract The reproductive potential of 3 harpacticoid and 1 cyclopoid copepods, measured by the intrinsic rate of natural increase, was calculated from field data. Calculated values are much smaller than those obtained from laboratory experiments. The difference between species is small and cannot account for differences in occurrence.

Notizen: Abstract The extraction of nematodes and harpacticoid copepods from muddy sediments or sediments containing a large amount of organic detritus can be achieved through a series of centrifugations or the material in a saccharose solution of at least 900 g/l. The number of individuals appearing in the supernatant after each centrifugation forms a geometric series, with a ratio which is dependent on the amount of material, the concentration of the saccharose solution, and the acceleration of the centrifuge. Knowledge of this ratio allows an estimation of density after only one centrifugation. More than 90% of the animals present in the sample can be extracted after only two centrifugations.
