Description / Table of Contents: The Arctic region is undergoing dramatic transformation. Rapid change due to climate warming is currently affecting the Arctic more than any other region in the world: the permafrost is melting, glaciers are receding, the sea ice is shrinking. With the melting of ice, the circumpolar region is subject to increasing forces of globalization, and navigation through the Northwest and the Northeast passages is rapidly emerging as a practical and commercial proposition. Moreover, the Arctic may be home to 30 per cent of the planet's undiscovered natural gas reserves and 13 per cent of its undiscovered oil. "What holds the Arctic together?" The emphasis here is on convergence, rather than divergence, the Arctic's centrality not its eccentricity. The contributions gathered together in this book all address essential questions posed by geophysicists, political scientists, jurists, geographers and historians. How can science calculate and assess the scale of change in this geographic space, in particular concerning the melting of ice? To what extent are the native populations listened to and act as active participants in decision-making concerning the Arctic? In the context of post-Cold War international and regional cooperation, what is the present state of Arctic governance? How are the Arctic States themselves cooperating in facing the challenges that lie ahead? Are existing juridical arrangements adequate? What role in the Arctic can be played by actors such as the European Union? To what extent are other powerful countries, such as the Asian giants, taking a direct interest in the development of the Arctic?

Description: This book considers how principles derived from a theory of human behaviour - Perceptual Control Theory - can be applied to create mental health services that are more effective, efficient, and humane. Authored by clinicians, academics, and experts-by-experience, the text explores the way Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) principles can be applied within the secondary mental healthcare system – from the overall commissioning and design of services to the practice of individual clinicians. A range of topics relevant to the delivery of secondary mental healthcare are covered, including community and inpatient working, the delivery of individual psychological therapy, the use of restrictive practices, and working with relatives and carers. The book concludes by describing PCT’s unique contribution to the field of mental healthcare. The book, one of the first of its kind, will be of interest to students and practitioners from a range of health and social care backgrounds, as well as service managers, commissioners, academics, and policy makers.

Notes: Temporal and spatial variation of soil bacterial communities was evaluated with both molecular and metabolic profiling techniques. Soil cores (20 cm deep) were taken from an upland grassland in the Scottish Borders (UK) over 3 days in July 1999, and on single days in October 1999, April 2000, and August 2000. Cores were separated into four 5-cm depths to examine vertical spatial distribution. The 0–5-, 5–10- and 10–15-cm samples represented organic horizons whilst the 15–20-cm depths were from a mineral horizon. The potential metabolic activities were analysed using BIOLOG-GN plates, whereas genotypic diversity was evaluated using molecular profiling of amplified 16S rRNA and 16S rDNA gene fragments (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)). BIOLOG-GN analysis revealed decreased substrate utilisation in the lowest depths, which was coupled with changes in the DNA and RNA DGGE profiles. Seasonal variation was pronounced in the 5–10-cm and 10–15-cm organic horizons for the July samplings whilst the 15–20-cm depths appeared more stable. Potential factors influencing the observed changes in bacterial communities resulting from soil depth and sampling time are discussed.

Notes: Summary A numerical procedure for solving the left eigenvalue problem $$\lambda + L(k) = \min _j [L(j) + K(j,k)],$$ and its right counterpart, is described;K is a (known) realn×n matrix. The first stage uses a modification of the Karp and von Golitschek procedure for finding the minimum cyclic average λ ofK along with a minimizing cycle. The second stage employs this information to generateL, by a very similar algorithm.

    Notes: Abstract The method of Peierls is used to prove the existence of a spontaneous magnetization for a spin system with nearest-neighbor interactions and Hamiltonian $$H = - J \sum\limits_{\left\langle {ij} \right\rangle } { [S_i^z S_j^z + \alpha (S_i^x S_j^x + S_i^y S_i^y )], S_i } $$ a (classical) unit vector at thei'th site, with |α|〈0.0298 and 0.0198 for a square lattice and simple cubic lattice, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The ground states of a certain class of one-dimensional models with a nonconvex interatomic interaction which exhibit spatially modulated structures are proved to be equivalent to those of the Frenkel-Kontorova-type models with a convex interatomic interaction. One of the nonconvex models numerically studied by Marchandet al. belongs to this class, and it turns out to be equivalent to the exactly solvable model with a complete devil's staircase studied by Aubry.

Notes: Abstract A recent claim by Bassi and Ghirardi that the consistent (decoherent) histories approach cannot provide a realistic interpretation of quantum theory is shown to be based upon a misunderstanding of the single-framework rule: they have replaced the correct rule with a principle which directly contradicts it. It is their assumptions, not those of the consistent histories approach, which lead to a logical contradiction.

Notes: Abstract The convexity of the free energy is studied for several lattice models in situations in which a parameter which is normally a positive integer takes on noninteger real values. Examples include the numbern of components in then-vector model, the number of states in the Potts model, and the dimensionality of the lattice. In a typical case there is a critical value of the parameter such that convexity is preserved when the parameter exceeds the critical value, but can be violated for appropriate Hamiltonians whenever the parameter is less than the critical value, but not a positive integer. In several cases the critical value of the parameter increases with the size of the system, thus raising questions about the significance of a continuous variation of the parameter in the thermodynamic limit.
